Jobs/Experience for a Secondary Student in Melbourne

Afternoon Ozbargain,

After working at my local McDonalds for a while, I’ve decided that I’d like to get a new job (mainly for the experience and insight that it can provide).

Does anyone know places that would accept a secondary student (I’m yr 11 in 2018) in Melbourne? I’m looking for a casual position (mainly weekends) in any area, as I’d like to broaden my horizons and discover something new.

(Also, I’m mainly looking for a job in the CBD or near there)

Cheers :)

Just walk around all the cafe/restaurant/retail shops in the area you want to work and hand out as many resumes as you can, making sure to tell them your availability. It's a numbers game so the more resumes you give out the more likely you are to find something.

Lots of employers rate experience at McDonalds very highly for casuals who are looking for work in the retail industry, as the Maccas training modules emphasise team work and customer service - so, you have set yourself up well for further retail work.

If you wish to work in retail in the CBD, apply for the big companies via their websites. You will need to upload an up to date and tailored resume for each organisation, plus fill in an online application form. You can also try cold calling with a current resume. I think that you might find that most employers will be looking for a person who is able to do more than just weekend work.

Are you doing VCE or VCAL in 2018? If you are doing VCAL try to find employment that fits with your VET course (in some cases this is mandatory eg in Beauty or Children's Services). The downfall of this is that you might not actually get paid for it (or at least not more than the Work Experience Act provides for). If you are doing VCE, have you considered how much actual time you will have available for weekend work? You might think that working for McDonalds is not the best job but generally the managers are experienced in working with high school students and have systems in place to help them eg flexibility in swapping shifts etc. You should also be able to train in a number of areas with Maccas including the McCafe (with a barista qualification) and the different areas of the store, gaining your Cert 3 in Retail and Food Handling Certificate.

If you can put up with this kind of work until you are 18, you are then able to get your RSA and RSG which means you can work in licensed cafes, bars, the casino etc. Alternatively, once you are 18 you could also work in places like aged care and disability facilities, as a personal care assistant etc. If you look into completing a Certificate in Business, that means you can also work in many places as reception or office staff. None of these need to be your career, but they could be!

If you really do want to look for casual employment, I suggest using the search engine www.indeed.com.au and use the CBD as your location. Indeed is an aggregator, so it collects info about available positions from all sites and compiles them into one list.

In the USA something like 1 in 3 adults have gained work experience at McDonalds. They are one of the most highly rated previous employers on a CV

the army suggested McDonald's and Coles, I'm not sure why they value those employers.

    • Ignorance is no excuse

Maccas employees would be able to cook far better than Army chefs. Food is pretty bad at Kapooka and never ever try to get extra bacon ;)

      • What role are you in the army?

Buy a 80k high-yield investment car, get a job at Westpac.

You're wasting your time working. Follow every other idiot and invest in bitcoin.

Hi. I worked at the mcg/ docklands in food retail. Awesome.

    • +1 for this recommendation. I started out working there when I was younger. It provided great experience, the hours were flexible and the pay was pretty decent. The majority of the work takes place during the footy season. Look up Delaware North for openings. (Assuming they're still the ones with the retail contract.)
