Driving - Which Rules to Follow? (Victoria to NSW)

I have driven from Melbourne to Sydney during the holiday season.

Interested to find out which rules do I need to follow?
Rules of the state I'm driving in or rules of my licence?

Unless signed, all U turns are illegal

    • +2

      You sure

This applies at traffic lights only

At non traffic lights, u turns are legal unless signed that they are prohibited

At least this is the case in qld, but imagine is country wide except maybe Melbourne when trams

Seems question has been gutted, not sure what they are asking

    Which do you think, really?

I got my license out of a cereal packet so unless I see Snap, Crackle or Pop holding up a sign I'm flooring it straight through that red light because apparently you can disregard the road rules if your license is from elsewhere.

  • Local rules.

When driving in general, you need to follow the state's road rules.

However, you have to follow any rules & restrictions imposed onto you by the license in whatever state issued.

    Really?

These have to be troll posts. Like the other guy asking on OzBargain where to find bargains.

    • +6

Or the guy parking his SUV in a loading zone because it has WGN on the rego papers, complaining about getting a ticket…

Probably not. There are stupid people around

So when you go from Australia to another country do you follow Australia Laws or the Laws of the country you are in.

Once you pass the borders and enter NSW, you follow WA road rules.

    • +2

You're a class-A d^ckhead. You obey Tasmanian road rules once you enter NSW.

Try making a hook turn, see what happens!

  • Slightly interesting dimension on this though:

NSW has double demerits on long weekends (for NSW holidays) while VIC doesn't.
Each has a reciprocal arrangement whereby offences committed in other states are (theoretically) recorded as if they occurred in the licence state.

So, if a NSW driver gets a speeding fine in VIC over a NSW (but not VIC) long weekend, do they get normal demerits as per VIC, or double as per NSW (as if they committed the same offence on the same date but in NSW)?

If a VIC driver gets an infringement in NSW over one of their double demerit periods, is this recorded on their VIC licence as double or normal demerits? What if the number of points (when doubled) is enough for licence suspension, but not at the normal rate? Do NSW police let them off as they can't apply double demerits to out-of-state licences?

When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

In QLD, we have different rules for different days

  • which rules do i need to follow?

    Give you a hint… “all of them…”

And why would anyone think, “Well, my license is from Vic, so I only have to adhere to Vic rules where ever I go…”

This is why so many Australians get in the deep shit in other countries while on holidays… this whole, “well, in ‘Straya it’s legal, and I’m ‘Strayian, so it’s legal here…” mentality…

Wow people are so quick to dismiss OP.

There are two parts to the answer: You will have to follow the road rules of NSW (e.g. U-turns at traffic lights prohibited unless explicitly allowed) but you need to follow your own (Victorian) licence conditions. That is, NSW provisional licence restrictions like the 90 km/h limit do not apply to Victorian probationary licence holders.

Thanks. This is what i did.

Dont be so quick to dismiss the others answers.

      Garbage in Garbage out.

Danger163 wants an intelligent and clear answer then they need to be clear on what they are asking.

Obviously Danger163, given their response to you, understands what rules he is refering to, but to others reading the post, this could mean almost any road rule.

So hopefully Danger163 not only learns what "rules" apply in this case, they also learn a bigger life lesson

…. be clear in what you communicate.

Like the blind men and the Elephant, one feeling the leg thinks it's like a tree, while the other feeling the trunk, thinks it like a snake……

Only follow the rules you like.

The OP states that they have driven from… meaning they've already done so? Is the next post a 'I was fined…. do I have a leg to stand on or am I being unfairly targeted by the willy wonkas'?

    • Nope. Not fined. Just needed a clarity.. i've driven 3 times till now.. i was following road rules of nsw but with vic speed limits quick we don't have ams have to follow whats displayed on the road.

Yet another of those completely dumb driving questions on Ozbargain.

I really hope I don't meet you on the road any time soon!

OPs next question - "I'm about to go to Europe for a holiday. As I have an Australian licence do I have to drive on the right, or can I do as I do at home, and drive on the left?"

    • -1

Im asking about interstate, not international. Hope we don't meet in our real life with your sick attitude.

  • +1

You should pick and choose the rules that you want to follow, when you get booked you can simply plead ignorance and tell them you got your advice from ozbargain. If they still fine you please make sure you post back here so we can give you advice on how to proceed further.

Just don’t drink and drive, even being an (profanity) has its limit

    Username checks out

If you need to ask such a basic question then you should not hold a license in the first place

  • Ozbargain rules, print out the page and keep it with you.

    • Sure Scabby.
