      or it could stay cool for longer, if you dont hold it with your warm hands that is, but atleast you wont have to worry about bodgy bpa free claims while you drink your warm water

    Recently heard an RN poscast where the claim was made (by a researcher that does research into plastics) that BPA free plastics are BPx (insert letter for x) and that at least two research papers have been published that reference the replacement plastic as having a similar hormone mimicking effect that's BPA had. Stainless steel might be the way to go.

      Not really. In this case BPA free is a bullshit marketing term. Soft plastic bottles have never used BPA. Soft plastic bottles will typically be made from HDPE, LDPE or PP (recycling code 2, 4 and 5 respectively). BPA or similar chemicals have never been used in the manufacturing process of these materials and there are no health concerns with using them for drink containers.

      BPA (Bisphenol-A) is a raw material that is used in the manufacture of polycarbonate and some epoxy resins. Polycarbonate is a hard transparent plastic used to make compact discs as well as reusable bottles, cups and other plastic tableware. There is some residual BPA that can leach out of the polycarbonate into food and drinks.

      As you heard on the podcast, there is concern about BPA free polycarbonates that are made with Bisphenol-S or Bisphenol-F, because they may cause similar health problems.

      BPA is also be used in the epoxy resins that are used to line steel cans for food container.

        I believe the plastic bottles that don't contain bisphenols are what used to be referred to as PET, however that's neither here nor there, they are mainly used for packaged drinks and while you are probably better off using them, they aren't typically used in reusable bottles (as you kinda mentioned). So are you saying this bottle is not made from a polycarbonate?

          Yes. The Officeworks description says: "It has a durable low density polyethylene and polypropylene construction.". Any similar soft squeezable drink bottle is not going to be made from polycarbonate. Saying that LDPE/PP bottles are BPA free is like calling diesel fuel 'lead free' - true, but misleading because diesel fuel has always been lead free.

          Polycarbonate and PET have a similar appearance. I saw some reusable PET plastic drink bottles while shopping in Kmart today. They had thicker walls than the typical packaged drink bottle so they were rigid, glossy and transparent (tinted with various colours). I checked the label and they are made of PET.

    Bpa is well known and most people avoid it, but it was just replaced by bps and bpf which most people have never heard of. They are just as bad endocrine disrupters and should be avoided at all costs. Just use stainless. In years to come you will see advertising saying bpa, bps and bpf free of which will just be replaced by another chemical.
