Best Buffet You've Ever Been To?

I'm currently sitting in a chinese buffet that cost me $12 for unlimited servings and great food. So I was thinking what does ozbargain consider a "great" buffet? What's the best buffet you've been too?

None, I always leave feeling sick.

    • +7

      I kinda agree with you.
      I'm so full rn ahahha

    • Honestly, this. Last 3 buffets from the top of my head. Malaysia, Dubai and Melbourne.

      • +1

        But where in Melbourne?

        • Roxborough park hotel. It's not "bad", but I left leaving sick as usual. I went to a very small Persian one in Dandenong actually a while back which wasn't bad.

    Breakfast buffets in German hotels.

Was once in a hotel outside Germany where I heard a German guest complain that there were only three varieties of bread.

    • +7

Can vouch for this, had great breakfast buffet at a hotel in Munich!

      • Hardly ozbargain breakfast buffets when the better ones are 25 Euro / head. UNLESS it's included in your room rate.

    • +2

      Germany has many bonuses ;)

      • Including FREE international uni!

        • Ever tried breakfast or lunch buffet in Indian hotels? Sick.. breakfast buffet I had in one of the Taj group hotels (3 star only) had fresh juices, variety of breads and stuff parathas, sandwiches, continental items, north Indian/ south Indian food (idli, dosa, upma, vada), fruits, other standard Indian fast food (samosa, kachori, poha, etc), milk shakes, variety of nuts and cakes/sweets, donuts, crepes, pancakes, handmade chai/ coffee, lassi, Indian set yogurt, several egg dishes (including Indian omelette with masala) and as if this wasn't enough - other items on live stove upon special requests. Not many options in raw salad though but I didn't feel any need ;).

        • @virhlpool: Mmmmmm milkshakes

  • +2

Breakfast buffet at the Dharmawangsa hotel in Jakarta - superb!

    • +1

How much did that set you back?

      • +5

Nothing! But it likely set my company back a few hundred each day. Great hotel but probably not going to be listed on Ozbargain any time soon.

        • +1

Fair enough I guess you enjoyed that business trip then lol.

    • Many times to Jakarta Mulia hotels, the food is amazing. Around 50 PP, the wine is crazy expensive though

Another one is Musashi ini Ginza Tokyo. About 80 aud if I am not wrong but you got to try select Wagyu from japan. Sake is expensive there

  • +3

The breakfast buffet at the Intercontinental in Budapest was pretty good, but I'm not normally a fan of most of the ones I find in NSW.
Club Marconi has a decently priced buffet (around $30 I think) which has a decent selection.

    • The buffet at the Intercontinental Kyiv was great too!

  • +2

Sea world Nara, but that was many years ago.

  • +3

Pan Pacific Singapore - Edge - breakfast, lunch or dinner.

    • How much did that one cost?

    • can vouch for this one!!! i think it was an extra 29 per person added to the room.

    • +1

I'll add the Marina Bay Sands to that one - we were 4 hours early for Check-in, but the breakfast buffet segued into the lunch buffet and we didn't take any prisoners :D

  • +2

A Dubai hotel we went to for lunch, during Ramadam. Then again I was pretty starving by then.
The breakfast buffet we had for our hotel in Mauritius. Very fresh and great variety.

  • +4

The ones in Vegas and Taiwan were the best I've been to

    • +5

      +1 for Vegas.

      • +2

        Vegas for sure

    • +1

Vegas would've been expensive tho right?

      • +19

You're not in Vegas to save money

        • +1

          Ahhh kk

      • +1

Vegas buffets are around $40 USD per person. After extensive research, we chose to go to the Bellagio buffet, which did not disappoint.

        • +2

Nearly all casinos there had buffet, they would be roughly 40-70% cheaper than Australian equivalent. They want you to spend money on the machines so drinks and food are priced great!

        • @berger: agreed, for value it's certainly better in Las Vegas than here in Australia

        • They’re free if you gamble

        • Stayed at ate at the Bellagio. Great buffet.

        • We had a buy 1 get 1 entry free ticket for the Bellagio 🤗🤗 ate myself sick that night

      • Actually the buffets in the casinos aren't terribly expensive (although they do range in price).
They can be a draw-card to bring the punters in and/or keep them there.

    • +1 for the Hilton in Taipei - service was a bonus

      • Is there a Hilton in Taipei?

        • talking about 1999 and I am positive it was

        • @Islund: no wasn't questioning you, was looking for a Hilton in Taipei as heading there in a few weeks however I think Hilton exited and may be coming back soon.

        • @dandandan: May have been the Hyatt but definitely had the best buffet ever. Basically 6 stars out of 5 👶🏽

    • +1

Yep, for me my favourite buffet was the Wynn, then the Bellagio.

In Melbourne I like Melba, then the conservatory. Vegas buffets are 1/2 or 1/3rd the price of Australian ones and you get more variety! Wish we had something of the same calibre here.

      • Did you do the dessert one at Melba?

        • No i've only done the lunch and dinner. They have a large enough dessert spread with the regular buffets. I personally wouldn't be able to eat enough sweet food to get my moneys worth out of a dessert only buffet :)

I will say that I think the convervatory has better desserts for their regular buffet, but I prefer the savoury selection at Melba.

      • Yeah Wynn was great, was that the one with the dessert room, I remember seeing on a ad there that u can pay like 99 bucks for unlimited buffets for like 24 hours at a few buffets, that was nuts

        • Hrm, I don't recall a dessert room, but there was an entire section in the centre of the restaurant for just desserts, It was massive and had any kind of dessert you could think of! it's the one buffet that had so many delicious things that even when I only put a bite worth of each food I wanted to try there was still a tonne I liked that I didn't even get to taste!

I do recall the unlimited buffet deal, the only reason I didn't get it is because one buffet was enough to fill me up for almost the entire day haha.

    • My bro lived in Vegas for a time. He used to eat every meal at casino's- lol.

      • +2

Did the airline ask him to sit in the middle on the flight back? :)

Sheraton on the Park in Sydney.
Bloody awesome, but not the cheap.

As I got older, I found that I prefer to use the money that I'd spend on a half-decent buffet on a proper quality meal instead.

    ie, quality over quantity.

    • +5

Sheraton on the Park used to be really good when they were Botannica Brasserie.

I tried it a few months ago (it's called Feast Buffet) and the seafood was poor quality, tasteless crab, cheap prawns and oysters weren't the best.

      No bugs or lobster. (unsurprisingly)

      • +2

It's been a while since I've been there and I used to love the lobster. The quality of the food was great before too.

Glad you've let me know that it's now turned to shit! Looks like I won't be going back anytime soon! lol

        • +3

They seem to be really sneaky as well. Ie their website has enticing photos of Alaskan King Crab legs, Moreton Bay Bugs and Lobster, but there's none of it actually served for most of the time.

The sad thing is, it's not just Sheraton on the Park where they are cutting quality. You can see this going on at the Shangri La and the Intercontinental as well.

        • +3

          @Vauxhall:

Who even are you? The Monopoly man?

        • +1

I wonder if the larger hotels are now simply outsourcing the space rather than being hotel-run.

If it's the case, I really hope that read the customer reviews and get the owners to up their game.

    • +3

The seafood is terrible there and I see people lining up for it. The crabs are so bland.

      • Geez that sucks. My memories have been ruined!

    • +1

Been there twice. The first time my mind was blown as I wasn't used to it. The second time wasn't as great as expectations were already set. There won't be a third time. I think I'm done stuffing myself just because it costs nearly $100 and you want to get your money worth.

    • +1

I went maybe 12 months ago. Not great!

  • +2

The buffet at the Belagio (Las Vegas) but I went when it was US$35 circa 2008.

    Jogoya in Kuala Lumpur.

    https://www.jogoyarestaurants.com/

I recently spent the most I have ever spent on a buffet @ Crown's Epicurean $95. It is not worth it and doesn't hold a candle to either of the above.

    • $95!!!
      Hand in ur ozbargain membership!
Was it for a family birthday party?

    • Worth if you visit the roast bar eight times and smash out the chicken satays and then load yourself on some nice tataki.

      Just don’t order any drinks.

  • +5

Cruise ships. Always the ones without kids/families. Often unlimited seafood or prawns.

    • +1

unlimited seafood / prawns is pretty much a staple of high end buffets though

Harvest Buffet in Pyrmont for e.g eat as many crab legs, prawns and shell fish as you want. AS long as you can afford the entry price.

Less of a sting if you have a Platinum Card though.

      • +4

Besides Sizzlers I haven't actually been to a high end buffet on land before. I loved Sizzlers for the unlimited soft serve icecream. Just as good as Maccas.

        • +8

Besides Sizzlers I haven't actually been to a high end buffet on land before.

Since when was Sizzler a high end buffet?

        • @johnno07: Worded it wrong. It's not.

        • +6

I loved Sizzlers for the unlimited soft serve icecream

Nah, the best thing Sizzler had was that cheesey toast!

        • @nismo: Vaguely remember french toast being pretty damn good. Been about 13 years since I've visited.

        • @Clear:
Last time I recall going to Sizzler in Melbourne was circa 1992!

        • +1

@nismo: Damn so long ago. Everything was better then.

        • @Vauxhall:
          Nice find, thanks!

        • @johnno07: it’s not even a buffet it’s a salad bar!

        • Our local Sizzler is now a Foodstar - salad bar with dry roasts, crappy Chinese food and Costco cakes!

        • Ignore.

        • We still have a Sizzler near us!

        • +1

@GaryQ: Our local Foodstar is now a vacant building, shut down by those scoundrels at "Food Safety Australia" lol

      • 40 buck lunch sounds alright. Am I reading that rite?

Edit. Seafood only dinners fri-sun $70. Bit steep.

        • +1

39.90 Adults / $25 child (Monday to Friday Lunches)

          Weekend is $48.90

          Dinner $48.90

Seafood Buffet is only on Fri-Sat and Thursday and Sundays
          $69.90 per adult

You get a discount proportional to your Star card's rank, so if you're Platinum, you'll pay $49 dollars only for the Seafood.

You will only get certain seafood items during lunches. For example prawns, mussels, seafood salad

Oysters and Crabs are pretty expensive and will only appear during Seafood buffet times.

    • I find the miserable old farts far more annoying than kids/families.

You're also more likely to be infected with norovirus on a cruise targeted towards older cruisers because the belligerent old farts either refuse to wash their hands or don't wash their hands properly.

Princess Cruises (which targets older passengers) has far more incidences of norovirus than say Royal Caribbean for example, which targets a younger audience (IMHO).

  • +1

If you asked my kids, they would say the Anantara Hotel in Hoi An, Vietnam. They have a whole section of chocolate/lollies/cakes for breakfast, lunch & dinner. A bowl of M&Ms for breakfast!!!

    • +1

      Hahaha sounds like a dream!

    • +24

m&m's are cheap though, shouldn't you be making them eat the seafood?

      • +7

You sir are a true Ozbargainer!

        • +3

          Standard buffet bargain:

          1) expensive choices only. Seafood, beef, etc.

          2) avoid fillers ie salty foods, rice, carbs.

          3) avoid cheap foods. Why go to a buffet for this.

          4) pile high or two plates (some places serve small plates/bowls). Its known that diners will not make much trips.

          5) important, only eat food served recently unless you like rubbery calamari, tasteless chicken, heavily reduced sauce on fish, etc. You mighy as well get these bargains with closing hours instead.

          6) obvious, have a big stomach. This is not for sandwich eaters.
