  • Is it 1500/3000 each month or total 1500/3000 in three months spend?

    • +1

Each separate month. So $4500 on first month, only $1500 counts. I'm currently extending my bills to suit.

      • +1

Not a great deal with installments/minimum spend and EXCLUSIONS

      • thank you

  • +4

Jeeez 9K spend for 120k points is a bit steep.

    • +2

probably will have to survive on mi goreng for a year after that to pay off the balance.

    • Probably works out to be $1k worth of points?

  • +3

If you work out the points-per-dollar for the Virgin-issued cards, they're not that great.

    • This. I've accrued 160,000 points renovating my house recently using this card deal. I logged onto Virgin last night exciting about booking international flights. Turns out 160,000 points gets me (profanity) all miles. Very disappointed.

      • +1

Get you a few flights to Sydney/Melbourne tho.

      • Whole point is to convert to krisflyer. Since virgin points basically never expires when you keep it active.

        • How much better is that?

        • Can you elaborate? @supaderp

        • @mr fox: krisflyer points expire, virgin doesn't. If you don't plan on flying anytime soon, keep it in virgin and when you want to fly with Singapore airlines you covert your virgin to krisflyer but you lose 35% value of the points due to conversion.
This doesn't apply if you plan on using your points on economy flights.

        • @asa79: let's just say all other airlines does luxury better than any Australian airline.

        • @supaderp: Do you get back more then 35% of value?

        • @asa79: I do, just depends how you value your points.

      • +1

That’s not true? I got return flights to the USA for around 120,000 points per person?

        • Does that include taxes? I'm guessing yes.

You could have sold those points for $1200 and bought return flights for ~$800 depending on dates

        • +1

          @tomclancy:

Yeah that was all inclusive - dates were high season (school holidays) so wasnt too bad

  • +4

Make sure you read the fine print as council rates and other government related bills will not be included in $1500/$3000 spend.

'Eligible Transaction means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semi-government entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs).'

    • Faark.. 2 months in..never seen this before (8th card). Prepaid my council rates!

      • +3

Yeah, I've stopped getting the Virgin Flyer card because of this. Citibank have made it undesirable and pretty much not worthwhile to use as government payments make up a good chunk of my monthly expenditure. I'll continue to milk their Citibank Platinum card which I have a lifetime $0 annual fee but I basically just wait for Amex Velocity Platinum deals now.

        • +1

The Citibank / Virgin email system is absolute rubbish as well. It doesn't allow you to use any proper commas, question marks, quotes etc, and if they write to you using these characters and you try to reply, you have to go through their email and delete all the grammatical characters so it can send.

        • @tunzafun001:

I know right? Talk about double standards.

        • As in 100000 point deals?

        • +1

          @Twocupteabag:

Yeah, I get the Amex velocity card for a year… get the bonus 110k points (via a referral), a free return domestic flight and I get another 15-20k from expenditure throughout the year. Cancel before the second year starts, wait the 18 months till I can get the bonus points again (all the while using my Citibank Platinum) and repeat. Takes 2.5yrs but it's the fastest way I can accumulate points.

Basically, I can take a free return flight to Europe every 2.5yrs this way which is pretty decent IMHO.

One can also use the Velocity Store ebay portal to shop on ebay for more velocity points… it's only $1 = 1 point but it keeps the account active so the points don't expire (I think it's 2yrs on inactivity that triggers expiration).

        • Good tip. So the $375 is worth it in your opinion?

        • +1

          @Twocupteabag:

For me it is. Just the domestic flights alone I net back that value since I take a trip down to Tassie with it at any time I want during that year and I love visiting Tassie. But between the domestic flight where I can also grab a bite at the Virgin lounge when going and coming back, and enough points to fly me anywhere in the world and back, $375 is a bargain.

      • +1

Some council rates etc can be paid via PayPal. I'll do this in the 3rd month. Cut loses, move on.

    • Is the The Altitude Black credit card from Westpac, also have similar conditions?
I was wondering if we can pay the council and strata fees on it and be considered as a eligible transaction.

  • +1

Pretty stingy only giving out the points in installments and all…

  • +1

Surely this is a better deal?
    https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/velocity-frequent…
Unless I'm reading it wrong you accrue points far quicker, you get a free return flight rather than a $129 voucher and there's other perks. Or am I missing something?

    • +5

Most people on OzB already have an Amex, therefore not able to apply for the Amex deal.

  • +1

I have one of these cards from a similar deal a few months ago. Keep in mind if you are doing a balance transfer, any retail purchases incur interest from the day of the purchase. And after multiple attempts of discussing how to pay off the retail interest, I am still not sure how it works. Each staff member has a different response. Just be careful, it's a little mouse trap!

    • Is that set out somewhere in their Ts and Cs? All I can find, which doesn't really answer this slightly different question, is:

"For credit contracts which commenced on or after 1 July 2012 and which are not designated as “Business Accounts”, we
will apply payments firstly to any monthly instalments due in the current statement period and then we will apply payments first to the portion of the closing balance of your most recent statement which attracts the highest interest rate and then to the portion which attracts the next highest interest rate and so on. Payments are then applied to balances that have not yet appeared on your statement in a similar fashion."

      • OK, I've answered my own question. On Virgin's Balance Transfer Request form, it has it clearly.

        "Balance Transfer Terms and Conditions:

6.You will not get the benefit of or be eligible for any interest free days on purchases while you have a BT outstanding on your account."

  • Aside from AMEX deals this is really good if you spend a lot. 120k in velocity points is nearly a return flight to Europe if you pay the taxes. Saves you about $1k.

    • 120k in velocity points is nearly a return flight to Europe if you pay the taxes. Saves you about $1k

Spending $1200 on something worth $1,000 is a very bad use of points

    • Rego and rates not counting is a first for me.

  • +1

It's a good deal if you can cover the $3000 per month minimum spend for 4 months in a row. Otherwise the Amex Velocity deal with 100k (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350794) would be easiest if you don't already have an Amex card since it's only $1500 min spend and the points will drop right away from experience.

  • +1

Just an FYI. After not making the eligible spend in my first month (thought rego counted), I called the call centre. They allowed me another chance in the 4th month to make the 1.5k spend for 20k points. So that's pretty good. 60k actual velocity points, $129 flight credit for $65 isn't so bad. Need to include rates/ rego to be a real contender.

    • Did they ask you for payslips after application?

      • Yeah, I just forward my emailed payslips straight away with every application. Then its all done and dusted.

        • Thanks

How long did Virgin take to approve application following submission of supporting documents?

        • @Tipu: next day

  • +3

I signed up to the previous deal of this for the Flyer card, I successfully spent $1500 in each of the first 3 months and subsequently got 20k bonus velocity points each month to amount to 60k bonus points.

And then I kept the card and didn't spend any on it for the 4th month (because other cards have higher earn). On that 4th statement, I got another set of 20k bonus velocity points, making it 80k bonus points thus far.

Not sure why but am not complaining. Just hope they don't take it back :P will report back what happens after 5th month…

  • I got this card in Sep17, hit 11k of expenses in the last 3 months - combination of xmas gifts, end of year holiday (car booking, accom, airbnb, expenses), ALL my direct debits (gas/elec/health/nrma insurance). Have since paid everything off today and received my 120k velocity.

Only get this card if you can 1) meet the min 3k pm expense and 2) if you are going to spend the funds anyway, might as well get the 120k vs $289 a fee.

  • I cancelled a Virgin Money credit card not long ago.

Is there a blackout period for sign-up bonus points if I apply for another Virgin Money card?

The T&C linked above simply say: "This offer can’t be used in conjunction with other Virgin Flyer Card promotions or offers. Offer is not available to existing Virgin Money Credit Card holders (including upgrades)."

I couldn't find anything else to suggest I needed to wait before applying for a new card and getting sign-up points… so I figure I am no longer an existing card-holder.

Any credit card churners have any experience with Virgin Money cards?

    Thanks

  • hi all,

when do they count the month? the time they give you the card, or the time from your first spend. Trying to space out my purchases

    • +1

From the approval date, so be careful that for your first month you'll have less time to make the spending criteria than a normal full month. From approval to you actually getting your card and activating it can take 3-7 business days.

  • WARNING - The paying of un-eligible bills through Paypal (ie council rates) doesn't work with this card. Even through Paypal, they wont accept it.

  • got my first months… 20k bonus, how long does it take for ur noaml spend 0.65 points per dollar to get into your account?
