Thanks new to Android and the lack of a music player had me confused (I don't want a stream based app). So will be good to check these out.

fYI first 2 end in 13 hours, last 7 days.

    • Thanks, updated

Good to see an app from Vietnam even though I don't trust that country for obvious reasons.

        • +1

…so it's not good to see an app from Vietnam?

        • +2

Not obvious to me - can you clarify?

        • @pal
I'm from that country and I'm not aware of any prejudice against Vietnamese app developers. Mind you the popular Flappy Bird game a couple years back was created by Ha Dong, a Vietnamese developer but with a little knowledge of yours about Viet app, I do not expect you to know and THAT is an obvious.

I too would feel very brave to hide behind a screen and throw degraded comment against a whole country but I'd be very careful if I were you.

          Grow up pal.

        • -4

I think threatening me in this comment is more childish than emotional.
But let's be rational and use our brains, I have been to Vietnam a couple of times but you don't need to know the history or read political books or even be there to know about the facts and see how a totalitarian communist government oppresses its own people including the software developers and limits their basic freedom and human rights and threatens the people who think differently! Infact there could be someone right here from that place to prove it right!
I just needed to throw the facts on the table and wait for you to prove it right! So thank you!
If you don't like it and would love to see more people trusting your government, change it when you go back so you don't have to go to other countries and threaten their people for not trusting that government.
This shows that the government is not the main issue but the mentality that thinks people with different viewpoints should be silenced. You don't get to come here and silence us. Fortunately we still have a bit of freedom left.
And yes, it is nice to see good developers from Vietnam and anywhere else, and I don't trust that country that controls everything and for other obvious reasons. Very unfortunate that I can't use that app.

@pal: Why would you feel threaten if you think you don't insult anybody or anything?

Also, if you're rational and use your brain, you will understand the different between an app created by developers and a government so stop rambling about unrelated issue, there are at least two people here excluding me who don't understand you.

Your original post/viewpoint is insulting and stereotyping a nation of people NOT its government so you don't got to play the victim here. I got to come here to silence you, just you. Don't use "us" because it's just you here pal

        • -2

          Whatever.

        • -2

@pal: I think I've silenced your intelligence and now you're just rambling nonsense pal.

        • -1

@lang_tu_syd: OK whatever. Good for you Lang
Not gonna spend anymore time on this.

        • @The Gent: Why do you think that?

        • -1

@elninomin: He said it was good to see an app from Vietnam then said he didn't trust Vietnamese app developers.

I was clarifying his stance lol

    • The google play music app is a music player that generally comes pre-installed on all android phones by default.

  • Anyone know how to change the default audio playback app when selecting an audio file in a file manager for instance? It keeps opening up Google Play Music which is hot garbage as an app.

    • Whenever you install a new app capable of handling the file type it should ask you which one you want to use, until you set one as your default

    • +3

On my phone, if I click a file, it offers me Foobar2000, VLC or Kodi (but strangely, not Poweramp which I also have installed).

I'd say that you've previously set it as the default. If you install a new program that can take ownership of those file types it should go back to the default prompt user behaviour.

In app settings, you could also manually take away GoogleMusics default privileges or even better, just disable it all together.

      • +1

I wanted Poweramp as default also, but it doesn't appear in menu. I uninstalled GPM (though it will come back) and magically, Poweramp is the default player now.

        • Never heard of that, disabling apps has always worked a treat for me.

        • If you don't want gpm to come back, I reckon you should disable it instead of uninstalling it. At least it worked for me.

        • @ccsvchost: I think that you only have the option of disabling it if it is built in to the ROM, otherwise, it just offers to delete it (in system apps)

If google is really force installing apps on your phone then you should probs start a new thread cause that would really be a big deal. So much so that I kinda think that's not what's happening…

        • @jonathonsunshine: Google always installs its own apps when you have wifi on when charging. Whether you can uninstall or not depends on the handset.

    • I agree with ekswhyzed…

But if that doesn't work, there is a more drastic solution. Go to settings -> Apps and tap on the menu button select Reset App Preferences

Foobar2000 for Android is best IMHO. Free as well.

    • +3

I use Poweramp mainly because of the equaliser with the ability to save multiple profiles. Each speaker or pair of headphones sounds as good as possible (for my tastes)

I know some Android users who don't/won't pay for apps though so I'm always on the lookout for freebies to recommend, so I'll add it to the list

    • Foobar's my default windows music player. Didn't know they had an Android app. Nice! I'm very used to Poweramp though.

    • +1

Hmm… as best I can tell Foobar DOESNT have an equalizer after all which makes me wonder why the hell they put all that other stuff in it… Doesn't even have bass treble… Tried to neg my own comment but it wouldn't let me.

    • I've been using Android since September and am not bowled over by the software in comparison to Apple.

I rarely use my phone to talk or message people but I do use it as a podcast player, so having one with a few key features (mainly "bookmarking", or resuming a long audio file where it was last paused or stopped) would help me on a daily basis.

VLC on iOS was quite sophisticated as an audio player but the Android version is primitive in comparison.

Will try Foobar and maybe these others as well.

I use "pocket casts" for podcasts, rather than a general media player. It's worth a look.

    Thanks for sharing!

Another free music player is Odyssey Music Player, which is also open source and available on F-droid.

  • Off topic but the state of music apps on Android is the only thing that ever makes me reminisce about my olde iPhone.

Like seriously, everything mentioned in this thread is pretty weak tea in comparison….

Genius was just tha' bomb and then they went and added support for their older devices as well. 120gb iPod classic generating playlists on the fly….

Equalizer+ is a freebie and premium comes up free occasionally.

Thanks everyone who suggested music apps, just got a mi max 2 and wasn't happy with the mi music app or the google play music, now I have 8 others I can explore

  • +1

Foobar is a great client on Windows for sure - didn't realise there was an Andriod app! Thanks op

  • +1

    Thank you

  • PlayerPro is my fave. Been using it for years over multiple phones.

  • +2

Another good one for the list is Musicolet. No ads, no internet permission, always free.

  • Does anyone know of a music player that can cast to ChromeCast Audio? Google Music wants me to upload all my local music so that I can cast it, which is unacceptable.

  • +1

One more question… Do these (or any players out there) allow me to stream music from my PC or Nas? I currently use ES file explorer, because every music app I've tried will only show the files stored on my device…

    • Would also like to know this

    • I think Plex would be worth a look.

    • You can do that with VLC, but it's not the best interface as a full music player. Not sure if you can make a library from it, I have just used it to navigate to my NAS folders for one off playing

    • BubbleUPnP will do this too

    • BubbleUPnP, if you are prepared to run a upnp server on your PC or Nas. Kodi.

I like PowerAmp (paid), and doubleTwist (free version, or paid Pro version). doubleTwist also supports Android Auto. But I honestly don't mind the built-in Google Play Music app.

    • they do have poweramp sometines for free, do they?

      • About once a year it goes to $1, and very rarely it has been as low as 20c and 10c - but I wouldn't hold my breath for that price again

      • The single person dev for Poweramp is working on version 3 according to the beta forums, so maybe it'll go on sale for that. But honestly there's no timeline for it as far as I know. He's meticulous and likes to do everything himself so it takes a long time for updates.

I use FolderPlayer. Free version and permissions are fine for my use. Folder view is a must have for me. Developer has always been very responsive.
