I have a new Nokia 8 and can't find any generic USB-C cables to work with it. The only one that works is what came with the phone. How can I troubleshoot this?
FWIW I did try the cables with a friend's Samsung and they do charge. So I'm reasonably sure the cables aren't a dud

Another is just a generic braided cable. When I charge the Samsung with these, I don't see "Fast Charging" but I'm not even looking for that. Just charging and being able to copy data in/out would be enough so I can keep it plugged in to my desktop when I'm working.
All USB C cables should work. If you have an opportunity, maybe try a better quality cable like Samsung's to see if it works. If you connect your Nokia 8 via the generic cable to your PC and nothing shows up then just take it as the cable is unsuitable.
Occasionally, OBZ would show deals for Blitzwolf cables. These are high quality cables so maybe get a couple when on sale. Blitzwolf has a few kinds of USB C cables, all should be suitable.

What is the brand of the non-Nokia USB cable? And when you charge the Samsung with it, does it say on the phone "Fast Charging"?
USB C is universal but the quality of cable matters as it runs a higher current for PD or QC.
