Tightarses Trying to Beat down Already Cheap Price

Most of us have probably had experience with this. I have had items that I no longer need, so want to get rid of it with the minimal amount of hassle, so put a bargain price on it.

Then I have to deal with people who want to offer half that price again. This has happened to me in the past and is happening again. I bought two Neil Diamond concert tickets for $285 and can no longer attend. I am offering them for $200 and am getting the usual time wasters offering $100, etc. What do you people say to these bargain hunters/time wasters?

Don't worry about replying if you're going to ridicule an entertainer of his standing, or be a tightwad ozbargainer and say the price is too dear.

The concert is 75% sold and still 9 weeks away.

  • I hate it when people on gumtree list their 2nd hand 3-4 yr old Reid bikes for like $300 and are like "NO LOWBALLING" then you look at the Reid website and you can buy a brand new one for $350 (sometimes people have advertised their old bike while Reid has a special on the same bike and you can get a brand new one for the price they want!), that doesn't have wear and tear and rusted to all get out. You tell them that this is the reason that you lowball and they don't care (and don't sell their bike).

Also I reckon about 5% of the time you lowball someone on gumtree you do get a seller willing to part with gear very cheaply, probably about 2% of the time that stuff is legitimately second hand (and not stolen).

    Thinly veiled 'for sale' thread?

  • If nobody is willing to pay $200 and one person is willing to pay $100 the day before the concert, you'll give it to them for $100.

People are making offers because you could accept them, and they're hoping you will.

  • Is there a way to automactically decline low offers (on gumtree)?
Seems like a handy function to have.

  • On gumtree, buyers can close a conversation and sellers can no longer response. Can sellers do something like this?
    Can sellers block/blacklist some buyers?
    Thanks

    • i didnt know that when you delete a gumtree message, it blocks the other person from replying

sometimes i just delete the message to keep the inbox tidy, however i dont mind if the other person still replies

      • The seller can’t reply or start new conversation

  • I put a $250 wooden toybox up on facebook for $50.. guy talks me down to $40 but didnt want to collect, i offered to meet him closer to his house after work, he agreed time and place and when I got there at agreed time he wasnt there.
I text him and he says 20 mins away (even though I told him 20 mins earlier I was on my way there) ..

Just drove off, bloody timewaster had already wasted 15 mins of my time by going there…

    • What sort of toy box? Where are you located?

    • Heaps of time waster on gumtree
Not much you could do unfortunately

I get this all the time on eBay when I haven't set an automated decline price, I usually come back with a counter offer 1 cent lower than what I've listed it for to aggravate them.

@gomazz At least you won't have to worry about this anymore

  • Bought new bose qc 35 ii headphones. Got a stunning cracker aroubd 364 as pre nye sale. Thought id see resale value. 400 bucka brand new. Sealed. Most online and retail stores are well above 410. Got a few offers trying for 200. One guy arguing he saw it low 300s on an online store. Screenshotted selectively. Hunted down website and added shipping in and it was well over 420 lol.

    • even on ozb, theres been deals on around the higher 300s- doubting people who want premium headphones arent willing to shell out the normal price to get warranty and want to go on gumtree and waste time($ per hr) over a few bucks..

      • perhaps. but back when the go pro hero+ lcd's were on sale I managed to grab a few and was selling it also somewhat cheapeer than retail but still enough for a quick hustle. They still bought, and technically while some of them I gave them the receipt alot bought without it.

That said, you could just give them the receipt and the warranty would be in that? Although of course they would know you resold it at a higher price, but I think it's fair game if theyre still paying less than retail/they went out to the shops to buy something.

        • depends on how much money your time is worth.. if you save 100 dollars but have to waste an hour buying the item, often its better going to work for that extra hour
