The problem is that there's a lack of reverse vending machine in my area. If I wanted to take advantage of the CDS, I would have to visit an Over-the-Counter Collection point (which are mostly car wash)

        • I've heard some stores only give out store credit which is pretty dumb

        • +1

Drove 20 minutes to my closest reverse vending and found 3 of the 4 bays were full and not accepting cans.

The bottles recycled ok, with the exception of the bloody bundaberg bottles (from a 10 pack, like these ) which had no barcode. Bastards. I purchased them at Christmas time so they should have been eligible.

        • Yeah, what is up with that? All the ones around my area are pretty much car washes.

      • +4

If we're ignoring transport costs then I suppose people in Wodonga, VIC willing to cash in over the border at Albury, NSW are paying $7 :)

        • I must be getting old. I had not thought of this.
Went with my folks to the Lismore machine at Christmas time. There was about a dozen people in the queue at which point I made my old man leave as holidays are too short to spend time in a queue.
But rather than chuck mine in a recycling bin and not having to pay extra in the shop, I can save up mine for journeys to NSW.

Good one NSW Government. It’s all Other Peoples’ Money, right?

    • +2

wtf is the point of this? I already recycle all my containers. who would actually recycle more often just because you can get 10c back? It's already so easy to recycle

      • +1

Yeah, I'm with you. Can't see the point, especially when they load the retail price to compensate.

Sounds like revenue raising veiled by an 'environmental' sales pitch.

        • +1

Thought it was a good idea at first until I realised they're just raising prices to compensate the reimbursement. That makes no sense. I may as well throw my containers in the garbage bin if I can't go to a collection point

      • It's a scam, plain and simple. There is no "earning" with this scheme, just losing as we are paying more than 10c extra per can/bottle. There aren't enough machines either. Just a big PITA for the consumer and another way for the government to extract $$. The council recycling bins worked just fine…

      • Another example of politicians’ virtue signalling costing ordinary people, who earn a lot less than a politician, time and money.

When I was young they had a simple scheme where kids could get money for bottles and cans collected on the road. And of course, nowadays everyone has a recycling bin. But there are no ways for a politician to show their goodness with established schemes. So let’s do this instead. I also wonder if there are any connections with the company that runs this and any politicians.

As it is, my NSW living families now ask us to buy cheaper soft drink by the carton to bring with us when we visit. This NSW scheme makes Queensland bought ginger beer taste better.

    • Does anyone know who pays for the CDS? Are the manufacturers/retailers making a profit off it?

That is, do the manufacturers/retailers have to pay 10c per bottle to the EPA or whoever, or do they only pay for what is collected?

Because if they're increasing the price by 10c * number of containers, but only have to pay for what is collected, then they're pocketing the difference, which seems wrong!!!

      • As far as I'm aware, manufacturer has increased the cost of drinks by 15~20 cents per can/bottle (10c for the CDS + 5~10c for restocking/admin fee). This cost gets past down to the retailers, which is past onto the consumers.

        • Seems a bit dodgy, as I can't imagine that all containers actually end up being redeemed.

          @nicbaz:
Thats what they count on. All cans/bottles surcharged - some refunded = profit for GOV

    • Decided to skip it because of this. Stupid scheme, just penalises those who already recycle.

  • Are the other flavours on special too?

  • This are non-alcoholic right? What do you add to these to make a great alcoholic drink?

    • +3

Add it to rum and lime juice (preferably fresh) for a dark and stormy. Refreshing drink and about as simple as it gets

  • +1

Waaiiittttt, my local return and earn machine spat my Bundaberg bottles back out at me. Anyone else get this??

  • Vodka, lime juice, dash of bitters, ginger beer = Moscow mule

    • And serve in a coper mug, where possible.

  • Whats the BB on these normally? 12months?

As much as I like this why do they insist on making it so sweet? Same with their other drinks.

    • +2

Agreed. I've stopped buying due to the insane sugar content. Could be half as sweet and still taste just as good.

      • +1

        Sugar farming region lol.

    • Spot on. You can feel this stuff attacking your teeth as you drink it, not to mention the sugar rush and weight gain that follows. Can’t drink it anymore. Still, this is a good deal if that’s what you’re into.

      • It's not worth the diabetes later in life. I've always wondered why they don't just lower the sugar. Their response would probably be to try the Diet version which has all sorts of things added to it. The same with Coke. I'd be interested to know how it would taste with less sugar. Probably better.

        • You don't get diabetes because you intake a lot of sugar. Absence or insufficient insulin does. If you're regularly exercising and fit a bit of sugar in a drink like this is no biggie. Someone who is fat and overweight with low physical activity might have an issue.

  • Hijaking this thread - anyone know o a local source for "fiery Ginger Beer" basically Gingerbeer with chilli in it .. seems in UK/Europe this is a fairly common flavoring but here nothing.

    • +1

      Matso's Angry Ranga.

    • could you make a chilli infused sugar syrup to mix into it?

      • basically I am currently trying something like this .. gingerbeer concentrate I have added perforated chillies to to soak, then will mix with carbonated water. Only been 3 days figured I need to give it 7 - 10 at least before trying.
