Mechpro Brake Cleaner 400g Aerosol Cans 4 for $10 @ Repco

100

The popular brake cleaner deal returns for 2018. Four cans for $10 at Repco until 28 January.

outlander had previously explained how brake cleaner is useful. The following is what he wrote. Here is a YouTube video that shows brake cleaner eating used engine oil for snacks, and here is someone recommending it for cleaning computer boards.

For those who don't know, brake cleaner, despite having a very specific name, is actually a multipurpose product. It is generally made up of alcohol and petroleum products with low boiling points. This means you spray it, it carries away the dirt and grease, and then it evaporates. Can be used on just about anything. The guy at the auto store told me he even uses it to clean carpet stains.

      Name checks out.

    • Depends how much you love your car.

  • Notable mention, Valvoline Synpower full synthetic engine oil 10w-40 $35 http://catalogues.repco.com.au/catalogue/price-down/5dcb6hrh…

    • 5W-40. The 15W-40 10l is also good value oil for diesel and lpg cars.

  • Never knew brake cleaner had so many possible uses besides what it says on the can. Going to buy some just because.

  • Make sure you clean the computer with an alcohol wipe after using break cleaner.

      Why it's broken now.

its an awesome cleaner in the garage.

    • I use it to spray the connection point between the oil filter and sump when doing an oil change just before replacing the new filter to get rid of the old oil that might be there
    • spray and clean the plug for the oil sump
    • spray and clean engine bay without any water
    • spray and clean greasy hands after working on the car

Maybe try not spraying a solvent into your engine's lubrication system. There's way more old oil still in the engine than you could ever clean off of the filter mount.

spray and clean greasy hands after working on the car

Main ingredient of most brake cleaners is naphtha which is nasty shit http://nj.gov/health/eoh/rtkweb/documents/fs/0518.pdf

There's plenty of purpose made hand cleaners that will absolutely blitz any crud on your hands while actually moisturising them e.g. septone protecta grit

Not inside the engine.. just the outside whete my grubby gloves have touched the outside of the engine while im changing filters.. im no mechanic.. thats why im hella messy.

Ohh i mean my gloves that i wear over my hands. . I hate it when i get grease on my hands and finger nails.. i spray the gloves so i dont dirty other things when i have grease on them.

      • Thanks for the naphtha heads up. We use a ton of Wurth brake cleaner at work from 20l drums and there's no naphtha in it (only hydrocarbons, C6-C7, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, propan-2-ol, <5% n-hexane). I'll be wearing gloves from now on.

Pro tip - laundry washing powder is very good at removing grease/oil after working on a car. It's rather alkaline though, so makes your hands feel very slippery after using it, which can be stopped with a dash of vinegar. It will also let you know where every cut and scratch on your hands are too.
