    Margins shaved to the bone.

No wonder they are so expensive to buy- they cost US$357.50 to make.

$1600 LOL. Apple taking their fanbase to the cleaners.

Genuinely interested in people who really are going to buy this phone:

    1. Surely this is for status (i.e. treat it like an LV bag) and not for its functionality?

    2. How do you show people your phone if it's mostly for status purpose?

    3. Are you really that loaded that $1600 for a phone is considered reasonable? Or what additional benefit does it bring to justify the cost? (e.g. a diamond ring is way less useful but well justified for even higher price because it's for life/ show your love etc etc)

    Thanks.

I don't think anyone thinks the price is reasonable, but for some (eg. winners from the recent cryptocurrency craziness), the price doesn't really matter. They just get it because it's the 'best', not for any merit on its features or anything. Probably closest to your first point actually

TCO is only a few hundred $ if you sell it when the next iPhone comes out. This has been true since the original iPhone.

I bought one. I price matched a previous deal on here with Officeworks, and will be going through TRS for it. I still think it's expensive, even though I make a reasonably good living. But I am sick of Android, as I am always having to compromise somewhere. Either camera, or wireless charging, or bugs or less polished apps, or just an eco-system that feels disjointed and fragmented. I have bought the flagship Samsung each release, and I've yet to have one that doesn't lag after a few months. So I thought I'd get an iPhone instead. The Note 8 is still around $1400 for Australian stock, and that doesn't even give me decent support. Samsung suck in this regard. Apple, on the other hand, provide in my experience, infinitely superior support for their products.

It was not a conscious decision to buy it for status. I don't go waving my phone around in a vain attempt to compensate for anything, I just like to buy the latest. The iPhone 8 was only a few hundred less, so figured I'd just fork out for the X instead.

So far, I am far happier with my purchase than I have been for any Android phone I have previously bought. Some may not agree, but ultimately I couldn't give a sh*t…. it's my money, as long as I am happy with my purchase then that is all that really matters.

      • Sure, but the fact is no one ever cops to the fact that theyre buying something for status reasons. People always maintain that they buy German sedans or LV handbags because theyre objectively better.

        A couple of observations:-

        1. Even Apple users dont seem to upgrade their ipads or macbooks with anything like the same regularity as they do their phones, despite the fact that both ipads and macbooks are used more intensively in terms of software. Apart from messaging apps and navigation, phone users actually dont use much software. But people carry around their macbooks far less often, so in status terms they are less important.

        2. Despite the fact that these phones cost $1600, a lot of people seem to abstain from using cases. Sort of like how some people buy a Maserati but instead of garaging it they leave it in the driveway where more people can see it. Sure the car is out in the rain but if you buy something for status there is no point in covering it up.

        3. On a lot of cases for Apple phones, there is a porthole for the logo to show through. Apple also supplies stickers for users to put on their cases to signal the fact that they have an iphone. This would tend to evidence that many iphone users appreciate being able to broadcast the fact that they have an iphone.

    • ALl the people in my street have european luxury cars and I live 30 minutes from the city. $1600 doesn't seem like much compared to how much they pay for their cars.

44 likes only 3 sold, excluding the launch where everyone buys into the hype, shows majority of people wont pay $1600 for a phone
