What Should I Bring Back from The States?

I'm returning to Perth from a visit in US (New York specifically) and I have an almost empty suitcase returning home.

What American only/hard to get outside items should I bring back? I'm thinking iconic foods or snacks, unique clothing or electronics which are cheaper here.

Any and all ideas are welcome!

    AK-47?

    • +7

      That’s a Russian gun though

    • +7

I feel like that won't pass customs haha

    • I read you can buy bullets from Walmart over there. :|

      • +1

I believe they stopped selling them after the Michael Moore movie

Cat clock from gift shop at the public library. I regret not getting one.

    • +5

      This one?
      https://shop.nypl.org/collections/clocks/products/kit-kat-cl…
You could use a forwarding service to send it to Aus?

      • That's the one! I have been thinking about it!!

      • +3

        Anyone notice the url name?

    • +7

Awesome, will look for it when I go to the public library!

If you want to pay postage from Perth I'll buy you one and ship it haha

      • +1

Thanks! I may hit you up on that :-p

    • +6

You can get it delivered straight to you here:
      www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kitty-Cat-Klock-Black-Kit-Kat-Clock-Vint…
Cheaper than the library & you might be able to use one of the generic Ebay 5% off plus Cashrewards (and postage is reasonable).

      • Thanks!!

      • +3

I think that's the 'small' one.

      • That appears to be a different product. See the comments on the ebay one, contrasting the Kit-Cat clock with the Kitty-Cat clock.

Shoes, sports gear, camping gear, luggage, software, branded clothes, etc.

    • +2

Shoes are a good idea! They're much cheaper here AND with Nikes at least I can customize them :)

      • +4

If you’re prepared - buy on amazon.com and have them ship to your hotel. I’ve done this many times without issue. Otherwise they have lots of great outlet malls across the place - helps if you have a car to get to the burbs and carry this stuff!

        • +1

Yeah I've noticed Amazon isn't competitive with some products retailers carry. Many clothing items can be had for cheaper during brick and mortar store sales, along with a broad range of other things. That said the Amazon locker is super convenient since I can pick it up regardless of the place I'm staying at

        • +1

          @Michael15286:
Sign up for Amazon prime, there's a free 30 day trial and gives you free next day deliveries in major cities.

I went to an outlet store rated 5* by 4000+ people in washington recently thinking I'd be leaving with all manner of goodies .. and I left with nowt .. nothing that cheap.. if you use ozbargain a lot then I don't think you'll find anything cheaper than when something on here on offer

        • @droodle: My wife wears Brookes running shoes. we looked everywhere for cheap ones, outlet shops, Amazon, every shoe shop we passed. None ended up being cheaper than she can get them on Catch Of The Day (a few times a year).

Other things are cheap though: Business shirts were US$12 from the Van Huesen outlet. Timberlands were about US$100 from an outlet - sometimes less with BOGO50% deals.

I haven't seen these things below on sale in Australia.

Clothing brand - American eagle, JCrew, Abercrombie, Hollister, Aeropostates, Banana Republic, True religion…
    Kisses Chocolate.
    Hand guns

    • Not sure about hand guns, I'd love to get one for show but have no intent to go through the effort for the licencing or even use of it.

As for all the brands, thank you I'll look for things I like from them :)

    • +1

You can get Hershey's Kisses in basically every chocolate shop, and even in Costco.

      • +4

        But why, they're gross!

Peanut butter cups on the other hand

        • +1

          white chocolate reeses cups. <3

    Moroccan Argan Oil!

100ml is about $26 here at Colesworth, the very same bottle is just US$8 at CVS. I buy a bag full everytime I go to US/Canada.

    • Nice one, always wanted to try it but couldn't justify the cost. Now I can!

      • -2

Really? You have always wanted to try Moroccan Argan Oil? And you're a guy?

        • +6

I use it in my beard.

        • @hugs: hipster alert!

          No offence 'hugs'

        • +4

It is at the direction of my girlfriend. :[

        • -1

          @hugs:

          thats even gayer dude

      • +1

If you don't want the hassle, choose one from here and add a reasonable shipping cost: https://au.iherb.com/search?kw=Moroccan+Argan+Oil

        Never got disappointed with iherb.com.

        Just sayin'.

  • +7

    Sneakers for sure.

    Donald trump.

    • +1

Noooooo, not unless you intend to flush him half way across.

    • +24

I'm sure our import laws prohibit dangerous items and/or fake goods

    • Well Trump is a case in a suit. lol

    Pepper spray

    • +9

The pepper sauce they make here is pretty nice. Actually, great idea! They have so many sauces unique to here that are quite amazing

  • Sports Gear (Snowboard)

    • +4

For all the snowboarding I'll get to do in Perth :p
Thanks for the idea though :)

      • Plenty of Perthites make the trip to the Snowy Mountains every season. :)

        • Why the downvotes?

      • ice hockey gear? you can definitely pick that sport up in perth. :)

    Peanut butter m&ms

    • +5

Man I've bought like 5 bags of em, plus a few bags of caramel, pretzel and almond m&ms.also ranch flavor pringles haha

    • +1

The variety of candy in the USA is could make a country obese and diabetic.

      • +3

You mean, make a country like the USA?

On a serious note it's disturbing to see high fructose corn syrup in everything here from pasta sauce to bread.

        • Corn is subsidised to grow in USA, hence they have alot of it and alot go's into corn syrup. Over in Aus we use sugarcane.

Also Aus is considered to have one of the largest selections of choc ect in the world.

        • +1

          @Slippery Fish:

Aus is considered to have one of the largest selections of choc ect in the world.

Really? Haven't seen any reputed chocolate brands in our stores beyond Lindt, Toblerone and Ferrero. Far more variety/ brands in the states and Europe.

        • @virhlpool: I'm talking different types, not just brands.

  • Leather jackets are much cheaper in the usa.

    • +1

I've always wanted to rock a leather jacket, if I find a top gun style bomber jacket I'm in

      • +2

Schott do fantastic quality - they are the OG for double riders.

    • +2

Also cheaper back in 1989, where they belong.

  • +3

Oh, and Nexium. You can buy it off the shelf in pharmacies in the US but need a prescription in Aus. Cheaper in Aus if you have a health care card though

    • +2

I have a healthcare card at times, but I don't know what Nexium is so I reckon I probably don't need it.

Edit: ahh gastro reflux medicine, I thankfully stopped having gastro after cutting beef from my diet.

      • +23

in that case nexium + beef

    • +3

Nexium is available OTC in Australia. It's just kept behind the counter.

      • +1

Oh ok I didn't know that!

      • Sure about that?

      • +1

Only the 20mg type and for 14 days, so I think it's cheaper to get a prescription which lasts for 30 days. And if you're on 40mg you still have to.

        • Pretty much, if you're on a 80mg daily dose you'll need prescriptions..

  • Nikes :D

    • +5

      With my name on them!

      • +1

Are you going to get Vash on them :P?

        • +1

That would be really cool but most of my friends would be like "isn't your name Michael?"

  • +2

US craft beers, beer glasses etc -
    http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/food-drink/g3244/the-be…

Hideously expensive here. Customs generally will go pretty easy on you if you are only carrying beer and NOT liquor and fully declare.

Also, jump on to craigslist when you are there, you may find someone selling something cheap that you may want to take home …

    https://newyork.craigslist.org/d/for-sale/search/sss

Get yourself a shipping container and load it up with second hand crap and sell back here and profit.

    • +2

If you're going to NYC, join the line at Other Half Brewing on a Saturday morning to get some of their limited release cans. You won't taste better beer.

      • Sounds very nice, I'll be sure to check it out. Thanks prhino!

        • +1

My mate and his bro brought an esky full of tinnies back from the states and through customs without any issues. Or so the legend goes.

    • Good ideas man, I'll skip on the shipping container idea, but I've checked Craigslist and am loving their second hand market.

  • +1

    Donald Trump merchandise.

    • I'm probably gonna get a maga hat or something funny for the sake of it, but I haven't been past the trump tower yet.

    • I actually tried and you can’t get the legit one anywhere as it’s a campaign donation.

  • -4

    Trump.

Maybe he'll have some spine to fix the country as opposed to the tree-hugging do-gooders we have running the show now…

    • +1

yeah, because he is doing such a great job over there. However, he might be looking for a safe haven when they impeach him.

    • +3

Pretty sure the secret service will have an issue with me putting him in a suitcase. Heck I reckon I'm on a list now for just mentioning it

  • +7

Grab a couple iPhones for your imaginary relatives and sell it here for a couple hundred profit and start saving on that 80k investment car.

    • +1

I'm wondering if that's actually a thing to do. After the price cut from it being "second hand new" I probably won't make much if any money selling an iPhone X in Australia.

    • Grab a couple iPhones for your relative and sell on Gumtree and get scammed with a fake bank transfer.

  • +2

General Mills cereal is very expensive here if you can get it, so lucky charms, fruity pebbles, cinnamon toast etc.
Shoes and clothing is much cheaper there at the outlets.
Occulus is also cheaper there if you are looking for one.
Look at items on amazon that won't ship to Australia.

    • I saw a lot of their cereals in Walmart, they looked pretty nice but I'm sure they're all loaded with ridiculous amounts of sugar. Definitely bringing back a few of them though, thanks for the recommendations!

      • Gushers (soft chewy liquid filled lollies)

    • Saw a shop selling Captain Crunch for $15.99…highway robbery!

  • +1

    Booze

    • Might be a good idea for gifts but not sure what the limits are, so I'll have to look them up.

      • +1

        2.25l

Moonshine is fairly interesting, and something I don't think we have back in Australia. I would recommend the flavoured weaker stuff though - 20~% (which they have tons of different flavours - I bought Chocolate and Salted Caramel), the 80% stuff doesn't make too much sense to drink IMO (other than to spike your own cocktails).

        • You can get moonshine in Australia, at least that's what it's marketed as.

I like this one: https://www.firstchoiceliquor.com.au/Spirits/ole-smoky-moons… very nice straight up with ice.

There's another brand of moonshine called Bearded Lady as well but they don't have all the cool flavours.

        • @Flamo:

much much cheaper, and more unique than what you can buy at duty free.
