What Should I Bring Back from The States?

I'm returning to Perth from a visit in US (New York specifically) and I have an almost empty suitcase returning home.

What American only/hard to get outside items should I bring back? I'm thinking iconic foods or snacks, unique clothing or electronics which are cheaper here.

Any and all ideas are welcome!

If you do anything outdoors-y, get a few tubes of Neosporin.

  • I like getting a whole heap of hot sauces and different bbq spices. Great stuff for cooking

  • A suitcase of m&m's

  • No idea what you're into… but I'm headed State side in Feb and I already have a list put together. There's no way I'll ever afford it all but a man can dream. It includes all kinds of parts (other than movie parts… maybe):

    PC Parts
    Motorcycle parts
    Car parts

plus the usual stuff like shoes/clothes/sunnies (do get a few pairs!!)/sports gear and etc

  • Smuckers Grape Jelly

SMARTFOOD (White Cheddar Cheese Popcorn) - God's food, seriously.

    Mophie Battery packs for phones.

They wont post here anymore due to the lithium battery restrictions.
    www.mophie.com

    • They look quite good, but honestly my Xaiomi pack works just fine

  • I had anxiety when I was in Walmart they sell everything there.
If you find anything on amazon they now have a parcel collect locker you can just pick up the stuff from any of their lockers nearby. Free 2-day shipping too with amazon prime (can do the free trial)
Their chips have so much variety. Cheetos, Pringles, combos, ruffles, lays - all unhealthy but so much more flavourful than the ones we get
Teeth whitening strips- they're allowed to sell the stronger concentration which are not allowed here.
Brand name shops - Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, tommy etc. if you're going to outlet stores make sure you sign up to their email lists beforehand they usually give additional sales esp if it's a public holiday there.

    • I grabbed the amazon prime trail, it's pretty cool to be honest. And I was in awe stepping into Walmart the first time. I felt a bit dizzy with the amount of brands and all the colors. It was a literally dizzying amount of choices.

  • Camera lenses. Nikon, canon, Sony, Olympus. Take your pick. These retain value for ever and very easily make a buck.

  • Cheap labour.

    • We have Indonesia just to the north of us. India and China a bit further. But do we really need cheap labor?

      • +1

My wife grew up in Fiji and they had cheap live in labour doing all the chores, cleaning etc. Sounds good to me. Would love someone else to have to clean up after my three kids..

    • Laptops/ tablets - much cheaper and latest models
    • Any other electronics that you find cheap on deal aggregator websites such as deals2buy.com or any OzBargain counterpart (not sure if it exists)
    • Vitamix (super high quality mixers)
    • Supplements
    • Perfumes from Perfumania or similar stores
    • Bring some jobs along.. we need them. They got plenty in every field.
  • Twinkies and different Mountain Dew flavors that are not available in Aus.

    • Man, the mountain dew variants over there are something else. I had a blue one at taco Bell and drove all night. I literally brushed my teeth twice after it though, so much sugar

      • Everything in the States has too much sugar. Sometimes I'll just be going through the day, and then notice my saliva is sweet. Gonna get tested for diabetes when I get back haha

        • Been tested before? If not - spoiler alert. They make you drink a bottle of liquid sugar (75g worth in 300ml). Have fun with that

        • @slimdealin: 75g in 300ml? I'm pretty sure some soft drinks have more sugar haha

But honestly I think I might get tested, always best to know

  • A North Korea propaganda poster

    • I haven't seen any around

      • +1

Yeah just reference to that American student Otto Warmbier that was dared by his friends to bring back a North Korea propaganda poster when he was in NK.

  • Diphenhydramine antihistamine - or any antihistamine. Get them from Walmart etc. pharmacy for a fraction of the price. And the value/item size is a great proposition for a suitcase. Even if you don't suffer, others in your family will thank you.
Paracetamol, ibuprofen etc. All these generic pain killers are so much cheaper in their 'house-brand' ranges.

  • Been a few years since I was there, but we got jeans from a Levi's store in San Francisco for under AU$50 each.

Probably helped that the exchange rate at the time was about US$1.10 to AU$1 :D

    • I miss those exchange rate days, but apparently we're headed back that way soon!

  • 1.The Real Nike Jordan's.
    2. Lebons maybe if you like them.
    3. An American blonde.

    • +1

Oh man, the list just gets more and more expensive as I go down it

      • +2

LOL drop everything else and just bring the blonde!

  • Meth.

  • I bought some coffee, caramel and peanut butter M and M's. Get them from a supermarket or CVS rather than the M&M store. I signed up for CVS membership despite only being in the country for 3 weeks and my bill went from around $70 down to $40 as 2 for 1s and various other discounts kick in that are only available for members.

Also, NYC is expensive compared to pretty much the rest of the country based on my very recent personal experience.

  • Wife and I honeymooned in the states. We brought back a whole extra bag of stuff for us/friends/family. I drove 50 miles to visit Microcenter for an EVGA GTX 1070 FTW, saved $100 AUD on that. Next on the list was 6 bottles of Tito's vodka ($114 US for 6, DM was $59.99 a bottle now $49.99). Some cigars (tobacco limit has changed to (profanity) all now though), tons of sweets (Twinkies, caramel apple Werther's, choc etc.). Oh, I also brought back a set of snow chains. Grabbed them in Reno and they were so much cheaper and easier to fit that I brought them back home with us 😂. We are an hour or so away from the snow here so they'll see some use.

  • Bring Melania as political refugee.

  • If you are NewYork, take a bus to Woodbury Outlet Mall. Load up on clothing. ie Got Tommy Hilfiger Polo for $10 USD, stuff like that. It is a day trip and most of the bus/travel companies in New York run buses to and from the mall.

Trump 'Make America Great Again' hats….wear them to Uni Campuses, Refugee rallies and Union Picket lines.

  • Am flying back to Perth from SF tomorrow and we really just stocked up on clothes. If PC parts weren't so high right now would have grabbed a new CPU, Mobo and Ram

  • Melatonin tablets. The ones sold there are full strength and available on the shelf of a health food/supplement store. You need a prescription for the stuff here :-(

  • Wrigleys Big Red Cinnamon Chewing Gum.

    • You can get that here at some IGAs. Awesome gum, but makes everything smell like cinnamon!

I'd recommend getting clothes if you're in the US. Way cheaper than here…

  • 2nd-hand vinyls from garage sales, flea markets, record stores.

  • You can get almost anything shipped these days. I'd use the time to experience NY. No matter how much time you have there, there is always more you could do.

    • Hardly anything on Amazon ships aboard to be honest. And very expensive.

  • Starburst Jelly beans!!!

  • SuperHerpes. Right now it’s considered exotic
