Upgrade to Xbox One X or Buy PS4 Pro?

Hi all,

I’m looking to get some advice from some of you who have been in a similar situation to what I’m in now. I currently own an original Xbox One and have been thinking about upgrading to an X (then selling my original Xbox One to get some money back) since I own a 4K tv and want to get the most out of my gaming experience. Buying a new X and selling my old original Xbox One will cost me quite a few hundred, so I have also been thinking about getting a PS4 pro instead. I’ve never owned a PlayStation before and know they’ve got lots of great exclusives, plus I’d be getting the 4K experience with the Pro. However, if i get the PS4, I won’t be gaming in 4K with any of my Xbox games or Xbox exclusives.

Has anyone been in the same situation? What would you choose? Any comments/advice is welcomed.

I know there are lots of articles online comparing the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro but I’m more interested in people’s experience.

PS, I already own a Switch so that’s not an option.

Cheers!

    • The PS4 Pro has significantly worse graphics. Do not listen to this guy.

      • I wouldn't say significantly as in most cross platform games I've seen they are pretty much even but addressing the question I'd say it's down to which games you prefer and which system you prefer. I have a Pro and a One S (Gears Of War LE that looks great!) but the One S rarely gets used, I don't like the interface at all. After I finished with Gears I really stopped using it and never bothered with any other games other than Forza Horizon 3 (which I loved!) I have lots of other games for it like the new Halo Wars, all of the Halo games, Forza 6 etc but I can't get past that horrible UI enough to want to fire up the Xbox. I mainly use the PS4 Pro right now but I also love my Switch, I've just given it a rest after playing all of the wonderful games that have been released on that this year.
TLDR: It's up to you but don't forget the Switch.

        • -1

Anyone who mentioned me the Switch, in a post specifically talking about console graphics, can’t exactly be considered a reliable source.

There are significant differences in frame rate and resolution between the Pro and the X, always in the X’s favour.

        • +3

@Burnertoasty: And anyone who relies solely on graphics is not much of a gamer.

        • @Where's_That_Cake: Tell that to the 10 million gamers with 1080Ti

        • @Burnertoasty: What's that got to do with the quality of Nintendo games?

        • -3

@Where's_That_Cake: Why throw a strawman? Because your argument is weak.

        • @Burnertoasty: Mate, you're talking out of your ass here. The only thing weak here is you.

I own a PS4 Pro and have been gaming exclusively on Sony’s consoles, a PS fanboy, if you will.
Still pisses me off that the PS4 Pro can’t play 4k Blurays yet the cheaper One X can.
    Just something to consider.

    • The even cheaper One S can

    • xbox one x isnt cheaper?

But yes, terrible ommision by sony

      • Apologies, I actually meant the S, the cheaper version of the console.

  • +2

I have both the Pro and the Xbone X. I don’t really have any brand preference, but really the PlayStation is absolutely killing the Xbox in terms of games and 2018 looks to be another huge year for the PS4. Spider-Man alone looks incredible.

The Xbone X is an amazing piece of hardware, but in real world terms the difference in graphics between it and the PS4 Pro is negligible. In most cases we’re talking about a resolution difference of 1440p or 1600p on the PS4 upscaled to 4K, and full 4K on the Xbone, which is nice but the kind of difference you need a really big TV to see. You need to ask yourself if that small bump in resolution is worth trading for all the exclusive games on the PS4.

If I could only keep one, it’s the PS4 hands down. My advice would be to keep your Xbox and buy a PS4 Pro, which is cheaper than a Xbone X, so you wouldn’t need to sell your Xbox.

  • +5

It really depends on how much the PS4 Exclusives are worth it to you.

If you don't care about the PS4 Exclusives then Xbox One X is the way to go.
If you really want the PS4 Exclusives then PS4 Pro is the only way to go.

For example, I am mainly a PC Gamer with a high-end PC rig. Last month, I brought a PS4 Slim (Black Friday Special) just to play Horizon Zero Dawn.
Now that I have finished the game, I am thinking of selling my PS4 since I am not really interested in the rest of the Exclusives.

    • -4

I bought mine for “no mans sky”… Worst decision ever. Horizon Zero Dawn came along and totally saved my investment… but now I have finished that AND the Expansion, it’s sitting there turned off again…

I love when all the PS fanbois come out and the first thing they scream in these “v’s” threads is “exlclusives” and they are either garbage or not as numerous as they make out.

I own both Xbone and PS, and can’t pick one over the other. Only thing that kills it for me is that the PS controller is tiny and poorly laid out, the Xbox controller is so much better to use. All of the games that I (and 95% of other people) want to play is available on both.

      • +5

You played 2 exclusives and parked the console and you think that is the extent of decent exclusives?
Also "95% of other people", how did you arrive at that number? It might be reflective of Xbox users as they have less exclusives but most of my PSN friends spend a lot of time on PS4 exclusives.

        Bloodborne
        Uncharted Series
        Last of Us
        Nioh
        Persona 5
        GT Sport
        Yakuza
        Kingdom Hearts

A couple missing from XBOX but not PC
        Nier Automata (PC/PS4)
        FFXIV (PC/PS4)

This is all released titles and in no way close to complete although it does pick big sellers.

        • @pegaxs:

Buy a PS because you're a PS fanboi, not because of the huge range of unplayable garbage niche pseudo-erotic Japanese anime games…

…I don't take sides…I love gaming, not because I want to get into pissing competitions

          Right.

        • -2

          @johnno07:

I own both Xbone and PS, and can’t pick one over the other.
If anything, I lean towards Xbox and that is based purely on having big hands and the Xbox controller is easier to use for me

Don’t let anything else get in the way of what I actually said. You know, cherry pick what you want to hear. Don't forget to get on the neg bandwagon.

        • @pegaxs:

oooph those down votes must hurt.

Also owning both, Xbox exclusives are trash this Gen.

Also the little thumbsticks are really spongy and soft on the xbox, I never thought id say I prefer the ps4 controller as the thumbsticks are just so snappy, i have come to prefer them.

        • @mavis30551:

oooph those down votes must hurt.

Not really. Imaginary Internet points don’t bother me. I like to refer to them as “butt hurt” points, it lets me know that I lathered the butt hurt on at least 9 people.

OzB is very pro PS4, so it was always going to be topical.

I just need a good deal on a psychology session, so I can try and get over all these neg votes…

  • Depends what you want. PS4 Pro has loads of exclusives while the One X had better graphics and s 4K bluray player included.

Plenty of videos available show each console’s positives and negatives.

  • +3

TL;DR…. see which console has more of the games you want, and go for that. If PS4 Pro has 16 games you want to play, but the XB1X is faster but only has 11, you should go for the PS4 Pro instead definitely. Also it makes a huge difference if your friends/family are in the same ecosystem so you can participate in Online Play, and even better, trade games when you get bored with them amongst yourselves.

    Long-version:
It depends on where your priorities lie.

Is it the game performance, ergo; more stable framerates, higher dynamic resolution, more polished visuals.
    For instance:
    Xbox One X: 50fps, 4K, High Settings
    PS4 Pro: 40fps, 1800p, Medium Settings
…but I think if you want graphics, you should get a Gaming PC instead.
(RAM prices are beginning to stall/drop, Nvidia is solving the CryptoMining issue, and the market is flooded with older-gen hardware which still performs better than the console hardware)

    Here's the rough hardware equivalents:
    XB1: C2Q6600, 8GB RAM, 2GB-GTX 660
    PS4: C2Q6700, 8GB RAM, 2GB-GTX 670
    PS4 Pro: Core i5-750, 8GB RAM, 3GB-GTX 1060
    XB1X: Core i7-870, 16GB RAM, 6GB-GTX 1060 Ti

However there's more reasons to get one console over another rather than performance.
The list of excuses, from most important to least, goes from:
    - Price
    - Availability
    - Friends Connection
    - Exclusive Titles
    - Length of Relevancy
    - Performance
    - Services/Online
    - Peripherals
    - Features
    - Build Quality
    - Simplicity

I would say the Xbox One X beats the PS4 Pro slightly when it comes to Performance, Peripherals, Online Service, Features, Build Quality, Simplicity and ties for Availability. However, the PS4 Pro beats the Xbox One X by a wide-margin when it comes to Price, Exclusive Titles, Length of Relevancy and Friend Connection/Popularity.
So I would say that's a definite win for the >1 year old PS4 Pro overall.

But again, a Gaming PC would be the ideal ecosystem barring Exclusive Titles and Friend Connection.
It does require extra effort to get into (hunt parts, build system, optimise the UI/simplicity, etc etc) as well as a slightly higher entry price. But over time it becomes a better experience, cheaper, and a much longer lifespan/length of relevancy. If you're serious about gaming, this is the primary option. Most people aren't serious, so a console can serve their needs just fine.

    • -7

PS4 Pro beats the Xbox One X by a wide-margin when it comes to Price, Exclusive Titles, Length of Relevancy and Friend Connection/Popularity.

Friend connection? Everyone I've met on PS is a tool. I have way more friends I game with on Xbox. So how does that make the PS ecosystem a win for me?

Not to mention that the party controls on PS are seriously stupid and not intuitive at all. Their menu system is poorly laid out and sending invites and messages us awkward at best.

Exclusive titles may be plentiful, but most are rubbish. Like watching SBS on a Thursday night.

And popularity is summed up like this… If you like gaming with 12yo squeaking agro players, then join PS…

      • +2

Ugh, go back to the IGN boards.

      • I was saying "Friend Connection" as in what console your friends use.
The majority of console users are on the PS3 and PS4 platform. There's less Xbox One and Xbox 360 users out there. This is doubly-true for the Australian market. I have seen many deals for games sold out at Target, JB Hifi, and EB Games… and every single time it is the PS4 copies that are sold out, and there happens to be still available stock of the Xbox versions. Case in point; this past November Sales period for Watch_Dogs2 which sold out for PS4 very quickly but there were still lots of XB1 copies available.

If your partner who lives in a different house (or friend) has a XB1, it is more beneficial for you to get a XB1 console.
When they finish a certain game, they can give it to you, sans the DLC codes.
Or if they are interested in the latest Call of Assasin's FIFA: Motorsport 9… it's again more beneficial to get the same console to play against/with each other online.

There are tools on both Xbox and PS, that's not a valid excuse.

Popularity is an important factor, as it can shape the titles that you get. And it can affect the lifespan of the console. I mean just 2 years ago, the PS3 was still a heavily used ecosystem because it was getting more developer action than the Xbox 360, probably due to the fact it was faster and the online multiplayer feature was free. However, the Xbox 360 ecosystem in comparison was like a barren waste as most of those users decided that if they were going to continue paying for online multiplayer that they would instead do it on the Xbox One or the PS4 ecosystem instead. The late popularity of the PS3 helped it edge-out the Xbox 360.

So I'm not saying the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X is a better console for you. I'm saying overall the PS4 Pro ecosystem is stronger, so overall, it is the better buy. But for you personally it might not be depending on who you game with, and which exclusives you prefer. The Xbox One X is better than the PS4 in many ways (Much better UI, Performance, Backwards Compatibility, 4K HDR10 BluRay Player, Online Server speed, Controller comfort/battery life, Third-party controllers, uses less power, makes less heat, makes less noise, some exclusive titles (like Rise of Tomb Raider, Quantum Break, Forza Horizon 3, Sunset Overdrive, Cuphead, Crackdown 3, Dead Rising 3, Killer Instinct, ReCore, Sea of Thieves, Titanfall, Halo, Gears of War, Ashen, Below, Inside, Gigantic). However, overall, the PS4 Pro is still better… and there is nothing wrong with that! It's good that we have two Tech Giants competing against each other, otherwise, without competition the industry will go stale just like it did on the CPU front from 2008-2017 because there was really no competition between AMD and Intel.

C'mon mate. Your automotive forum comments are better than this.

        • It was always going to be a big ask on OzB to take a side opposite to PS. The fanboi meta here is real and anything that questions this is always met with immediate downvotes, no matter how true it is. Gaming and consoles are very polar, unlike the automotive forum where there are so many choices for cars, consoles it’s just 3 players. It’s just another version of Apple vs Samsung.

People are passionate and this passion makes them great advocates for what every they perceive as being the best. I own all consoles, so I am impartial and neutral, but even that is seen as scary to most, as they can’t understand why I don’t take a side. I call it how I see it, and if that ruffles a few feathers, then so be it.

If I changed what I said about PS to Xbox and reversed them, I would be swimming in positive votes but unfortunately, someone has to play the devils advocate some times, and if it only means I cop a few negative fake internet points so some fanbois can feel better about themselves, that’s just the cost of being controversial…

Might head back to automotive… :D

        • @pegaxs: or maybe, just maybe, you're wrong.

Ps4 outsells xbox 2:1 this gen.
Last Gen xbox was on top.
Unfortunately its a pretty good indicator of which is the better console.

Why are you so mad that that most peoples oppinion ps4 is a better console? Its not like you have a personal stake in either?
If you prefer the xbox , good for you. No one on this forum has said its a bad console. You can like both and still think one edges out the other, which doesnt make the other a bad console.

  • Since you have been enjoying Xbox exclusive for a while now, why not give PS exclusives a try. They are both great consoles but just solely on software titles that are coming out in the near future, PS4 has more in the pipeline. If you also have a PC, games like Gears and Forza are also on the play anywhere program so PS4 + PC is also an option.

Games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc would make a really lasting impact in your life. Till date, people still use Uncharted as benchmark for graphical fidelity and story telling. One of my all time favourite franchise is Halo but to me, it died the moment Bungie left MS.

    • Halo … died the moment Bungie left MS

On that note, 343 has done a better job of Halo than Bungie has done of Destiny as of lately…

      • $$$

      • 343 has done a better job of Halo than Bungie has done of Destiny. That's a fine argument, because both are crap.

That's like saying Disney has done a better job of Star Wars.

        • Found the CoD player…

        • @pegaxs: That's not true, because CoD players are dumb enough to like the new Star Wars movies.

Also CoD hasn't been relevant for at least 5 years.

I was gonna say "Kinda like Halo", but Halo Reach came out 8 years ago.

  • If you want to get the best out of your tv, you need to]he Xbox one x because it is the most powerful console ever.

I would buy an Xbox one x and then maybe a preowned ps4, play the exclusives and trade it in.

I do not like the idea of buying all new controllers, games, etc

  • +1

The reason I bought an Xbox One X was the fact that most of my mates have Xboxes and we often play together online. Every game I have or want is on both platforms and there’s nothing that PS exclusive that floats my boat……but if my mates had PS’, I’d now have one too.

Of course, the 4K bluray and better graphics are great but it’s the community aspect that drives it completely for me.

  • +2

i have both, rarely turn the One X on as no one i know has an Xbox so unless its a single player game i rarely have a reason to play it.

if you want a larger community with more people to play and the console with better exclusives then get the PS4 Pro

  • I tend to play multiplatform games (ie COD, BF1) so have no preference, but I find the PS4 controllers really uncomfortable vs the xbox1 controllers

  • +1

Remember that you play games - not graphics. Stick with your xbox one until the X comes way down in price. Get a PS4 pro for a whole new world of games and a bit of different experience. Or get nothing and save your money for the next generation of consoles.

  • I'll answer that question with a question… Do you have a really good internet connection? Because if you don't, there's very little point in getting the XboneX to play 4k content.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2017/11/08/xbox-one-…

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-11-03-xbox-one-x-come…

With that said, a PS4 pro is definitely worth the purchase, just to play Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last Of Us. ;)

  • -1

I wouldn't be influenced by the PS4 Pro's current inability to play 4k blurays, that will be rectified with a future firmware update. The PS4 originally had issues with blu rays and 3d which was fixed.

Playstation VR is an amazing experience, if that factors for you then I would go for the PS4. If not, I would go with whichever games library appeals to you most (or price).

  • The Xbox One X is around $649, the PS4 Pro can be had for around $499, but regularly is on sale and I think $449 is probably a very attainable price. So the price difference is around $200 (i.e. probably just a bit more than what your old Xbox One is worth).

My advice is to keep your original Xbox One and get a PS4 Pro so that you can play exclusives from both worlds. Sure, the Xbox One X is a great console, but it plays the same games as your original Xbox One just with better graphics and maybe a higher refresh rate. It really comes down to what you value, do you want to broaden your horizons, or are you happy with the games that you have?

  • At the moment it's really about exclusives, this is excluding backwards compatibility though. Sony are lining them up really well, while Microsoft are still struggling to put something decent out there, they've had Halo 5, MCC & Sunset Overdrive were probably the only exclusives I've played so far or had an interest in. All of them were short experiences too.

But there's also different targets each company aims for, so it depends on your personal tastes and something you might want to also consider. In general, for exclusives; Xbox = majority multiplayer oriented (i.e. Halo, Gears, Forza etc…), Sony = majority single player oriented (i.e. Uncharted, Last of Us, Horizon etc…), Nintendo = majority family friendly oriented (i.e. Zelda, Mario, Splatoon etc…)

Personally I'd preference upgrading to the PS4 Pro over the Xbox One X at this stage and wait for a sale on the Xbox One X/wait until you're ready to drop some more money into a new console. I'm also planning on upgrading my Xbox One to a One X but because I really only bought it for Halo 5 & the master chief collection (at the time), I don't feel it's worth upgrading to the X just yet due to the price difference & lack of exclusives, also especially cause I already have a PS4 Pro. I don't game in 4K either, so I can't really comment on graphics, I'm still happy gaming at 1080P on console & PC, as long as it's smooth I'm happy.

When I upgraded to the Pro, it was because EB Games had a decent-ish deal where you actually got decent trade value so I think I only ended up spending around $150-180 for the Pro, at the time I think it worked out better doing it this way than trying to sell it myself. I wish they did that for the One to X but if I recall they only did it for S to X. Whereas if I wanted to trade in the Xbox One now, I'd only get about $80-90 at JB Hifi or $120 at EB Games, so for me it's not worth it.

  • +1

I have both and I love my oneX more despite all my friends playing on the PlayStation. It just comes down to the overall experience. I have a great TV and I felt the Pro just didn’t take advantage of it, and for me the OneX was a night and day change.

I also use the Microsoft rewards scheme and often save a few bucks on either a game or Xbox Live. I use Xbox Game Pass as well since all new exclusives will be available through that, and I love the backwards compatibility with og Xbox and 360 games.

So it’s more of the package deal that keeps me, plus I think some of the controllers are much prettier :P

From Somy I love Uncharted and The Last of Us, so I keep it around for that.

  • -1

Since the consoles, fundamentally, have been the same since the day they released in terms of actual games they're capable of outputting into your brainholes, it doesn't really matter. Spending another console's worth on a thing that's already playing the games you can play kind of makes the Bargain part of OzBargain redundant.

Buying into the PS4 Pro and Xbox Juan Espanol right now is possibly a misguided customer decision, considering it's a fair bet that Microsoft will just reveal a bigger, better Xbocks at every E3 from now until we're all dead. It's like a computer now; they want you to buy one at least every 3 years so you're upgrading forever.

I hate to be that guy, but the PC has a significantly higher game catalog, can play games at usually better graphics, don't need a mandatory online subscription, and the games are usually cheaper; the higher buy-in price for the system pays for itself, considering you're rebuying better versions of consoles you already own as is. I don't really know anything about how good it is at playing media without big upgrades; coz I use my games systems to play games.

The actual number of games that are in 4K now is abysmally small, and limited to a tiny variety of genres. (Hope you like rassan', shootan', and Minecraftan!) But if you really can't wait til E3 when Microsoft gives us the Xbox Two XYZ then buy whatever you like; because Monster Hunter's on both.

  • What Xbox exclusives?
    That is all.

  • The games I wanted were exclusive to PS4 (I'm a racer)

Summed it up for me! Plus the reliability of Xbox disc drives never excited me
