Best Stick Vaccuum (Not Dyson)

I'm in the market for a new vaccuum and I really like the ease of the stick vacuums. I feel I may actually vaccuum frequently with one.

I'm trying to stay below $200 (hence no Dyson).

I've listed brands below, but if you have a model pref, please add a comment.

Also if anyone has any opinion on the stick vacuums that come with the in built dustbuster, I'm curious about whether they're just a useless addition or if they're actually good at sucking.

  • I have a Samsung cord zero vacuum and it is great. Comes with two batteries. One charges on the charging dock and second charges on the vacuum itself. Suction is good and easy to move around. I bought this when I was considering Dyson but was expensive. I got this for 235 on binglee so it may be a bit over your 200 mark.

    • Can you check, Samsung is Power Stick and LG is Cord Zero

      • Yeah, I'm curious too, which one was it @livingoracle?

I have an electrolux lithium and find it quite effective. Sure it doesn't have the suction power of a dyson but does the job nicely for small dry spills and dust.

    • Thanks. Quick question though, is it your only vaccuum or do you have another that you use for the full house clean?

      • No it’s not my only vacuum.

    • A family member bought one 2-3 years ago for $180 on sale, which was quite a bit cheaper than RRP for that particular model.

I can confirm that it's a good vacuum and they were also using it as their only vacuum but ended up getting a Dyson last weekend from the Big W sale - the main reasons being lower weight and inability of the Electrolux to get under some low beds due to the higher profile of the brush.

  • We have a Dyson, so possibly biased. I used a Hoover cordless vac once. It had the motor etc at the bottom and was overly heavy and the handle was flexy. It was designed so that you could remove the handle and use it as a hand held, but that created the flex in the handle - didn't like it. The dyson on the other hand has the motor and battery in the handle bit, so there is less weight and flex in the extension and it's still easy to use hand held.

    • See I have used the V8 Dyson and find the handle heavy to use, though the general movement of the product is easy.

Just saying, had a cordless hoover Stick Vacuum, bought it for around $250,
suction was ok, but movability on carpet is sux. Bad mistake.
then end up upgrade to dyson v7 ($400 with discounts); worth the extra $$.

  • What's an inbuilt dustbuster?

    • +1

      See this one https://www.bigw.com.au/product/hoover-cordless-plus-hand-st…

There is a dustbuster (how very 80s) that is attached but can come out for smaller spills.

      • That's the style I found to be heavy on the end. When the weight is at your hand, it is a little heavier but easier to move around. The dyson convert to dustbuster style as well, but you remove the foot extension, rather than the handle, same principle but different weight distribution.

        • Ok that's good to know that it's heavy that way. Yeah I know the dyson becomes a dustbuster. It was brilliant to clean my car!

  • Dyson V6 slim can be had for $220 on sale at TGG every now and then if you can stretch your budget a little

    • That's not a bad price. Will have a look at all the attachments that come with it. I'd be happy to spend that for a Dyson. I was also looking at the Dyson V6 Animal for $329 at Big W (https://www.bigw.com.au/product/dyson-v6-animal-origin-hands…) but this is definitely a bit more than I was wanting to pay.

      • At least goes for dyson v7, bin emptying is much much easier.

I love the Vax VX58 I bought early this month for $119.20 at Big W. The detachable hand-held vacuum cleaner is very handy and powerful for quick and easy spot-cleaning. I really hate housework but this stick cleaner is so light and easy to manoeuvre that it makes vacuuming so much less onerous.

I find myself vacuuming more frequently with this Vax! I just wonder why I didn't get a cordless stick vacuum earlier!!!

  • Don't buy a VAX. The quality is terrible, as is the after sales service. My VX51 lasted 7 months before failing, and it was a lot of hassle to get another which turned out to be dead in the box. They're cheap for a reason. I'd spend the extra and get a Dyson.

  • I've had both an Electrolux and a Dyson. The Electrolux was easier to push but the suction, umm sucked and battery life was shorter than I expected.

The Dyson is more tiring to use than the Electrolux but is capable of vacuuming properly.

In the end though the Dyson is better IMO.

    • Was it a 12V, 18V or 24V Electrolux model? And the Lithium version of the Electrolux has addressed the battery issue.

Also, you're comparing apples and oranges - 18v Lithium Electrolux is about half the price of the V6 Dyson.

  • Just spend a little more and get Xiaomi Robot that does all the work for you.

    • Given the choice, if you're talking about the only vacuum, for about the same money, I'd still get a Dyson stick…

    • Saw that, ta, but unfortunately I'm in VIC!

    • Great deal for those who can grab one

Electrolux are the vacuum kings, i have seen so many ancient ones still vacuuming like champions, the volta models mainly.

    • +1 for Volta, I've had my stick vac for years and it's still going strong

      How's her suction?

  • VAX. I havnt tried them but seen them at jb hifi whats the opinion on the Vax range?

  • I have a Dyson V8 absolute and love it. Expensive yes but makes housework so much easier and having 2 heads with it, one for hard floors and one for carpet is great. Plus the bonus of converting to a handheld making car cleaning and quick clean ups a breeze…

  • Electrolux Ergorapido 18v is brilliant - we use it as our main vacuum, and just do a follow up with the 240v barrel vac once a month or so.

    • I bought this one and it failed twice in 2 years. Now its out of warranty by just a month and electrolux won't do anything

      • Bugger. Ours is thankfully still going strong after 2 years but that's the law of averages for you…

You get what you pay for.
I have a Dyson which is 3 years old. 2 months ago, the roller head developed an intermittent problem where the rollers would stop on tough services like shaggy mats. It gets used everyday and I thought it worn out so rang Dyson to order a new roller head. They asked why and when I explained they suggested we try doing some fault checking before ordering, if I had the time, which we did over the phone. After 5 minutes we found that the contacts on the battery were dirty and the problem was fixed, I saved $125.
Any other company would have taken my money and sent me the new head. So, great product, awesome customer service, which the cheapies just can't afford to provide in the price they charge.

  • Sorry, can't advise on the cheaper ones. We have a Dyson V6 and it is the bomb. Manoeuvrable, easy, fast. You definitely vacuum more frequently cuz it's not a pain in the arse. One of the few products where I think the extra money is worth it.

  • Bought two of this recently..

    https://www.bigw.com.au/product/contempo-2-in-1-stick-handhe…

Will let you know when it breaks down.

Corded but stick not bad suction small bin but usable.

For $29 each it is much cheaper than Dyson and is picking up the dirt.

Great for first time buyers imho.

When it runs its course or lifecycle at least I will be able to compare it to maybe a Dyson or a Miele if I go barrel vacuum.

    • Awesome, thanks. Does it work ok for both hard floors and carpets?

      • I wouldn’t. You get the power of a cordless (less) and the inconvenience of a cord and a small barrel.

        • Yeah the wattage of that one concerns me, I was just curious.

        • +1

@jjjaar: it did at first but for my uses it passes the test afaik.. I mean I didn't really have one prior to it so value to usability for me was more than perfect. I use it on all floors.

It's ok at best.. does more than the price tag that's for sure at $30 but if you need something stronger I would look elsewhere.

This is first buy first rental place kind of territory not foolproof proper house territory..

Just so that my nail clippings and junk food crap goes in check.

          I'd say 55-65% cleaning efficiency.

        • @AlienC: Good summary, much appreciated.
