I missed out last time because of indecisiveness. I'll take it this time. Been keeping an eye on pricing for this lately. Thanks for the deal. It's actually still more expensive than last time despite being lower in GBP. The GBP has appreciated since then.

I wasn't sure whether to get these or Massdrop's 6xx which is also a good price, but double the price of this, and I've heard inferior for gaming due to narrower soundstage.

I'm looking forward to testing them out.

Only downer is that Senn doesn't give cases or even a carry pouch. So I'll have to find one of these also. Beyer give you a proper hard case. AKG at least gives you a cloth pouch.

I got on the HD6xx drop that just ended (shipping late March), and I’m also on the drop for the HD58x. The 598’s definitely hooked me on the Sennheiser sound signature. The only thing with the 6xx’s is i will have to upgrade my amp as I’m only using a Fiio Q1 Mk2 at the moment. But from all the comparisons I’ve read between the HD650/6xx/600 and the 598, the 598’s hold their own incredibly well, and as you say, soundstage is actually widest on the 598’s.

I bought these about a month or so ago from Amazon UK (paid $150) and shipping was pretty quick - arrived 10 days sooner than the estimated delivery date.

      • The 6xx are phenomenal.

Have them on right now. I have the 598SE and they're also excellent - probably the most comfortable pair I own.

      • Can a dual shock 4 or Xbone controller drive the 598? Or will I need an amp?

I have not been able to get the PS4 to connect to any of my USB portable amp/dacs. It's not recognized.

And it has no coax output or 3.5mm output (it has mini toslink but I don't have an amp that takes toslink). This means if I'm amping it, I will need to connect DS4 to amp via 3.5mm, then amp to headphones via 3.5mm. This is messy and ugly, and having an amp in between controller and headphones shifts the balance and center of mass of the entire unit downwards. It's just a bad setup.

        • I don't run an amp, using these on my PC for gaming, straight from the audio card 'out' point.

Nope, my PS4 and X1 controllers drive these easily. They’re 50 ohm, but they’re very efficient. I think they’re 110 or 112 dB. I had a pair of Fidelio X2’s which are 32 ohm, but they were harder to drive because they’re <100 dB.

  • How are these for gaming on ps4 (specifically FPS- hearing enemy footsteps etc) also what kind of amp is needed? Currently have the Astro a40tr’s, would like to continue using the Astro mixamp but I don’t think it could power these

Can vouch for these as great for gaming, that's their primary use on my PC rig.
Great for footsteps, and very comfortable for long sessions.
Not 'so' bass-y, but I'm not really bothered with that.

  • Bought one. Thanks OP. I see that the case on Amazon is 13GBP,is there one locally for cheaper?

  • It says: This item does not ship to Australia, so how could you order?

    • Doesn’t say that for me, I just checked it again.

  • Just got mine today. 11 days earlier than ETA.

The oval shape of the cups takes some getting used to. They feel too long. The clamping pressure is not bad but noticeable. I prefer my AKG K712 Pro which you don't even notice you're wearing after a few mins.

I really love the soundstage. I can hear things from the right direction and distance. If I played shooters this would probably help.

Something I didn't expect is that Sennheiser's audio cable, while detachable is proprietary. It still uses 3.5mm, but just any cable will not fit. It has to have two grooves in the plastic part that twist in place. If you want to use a different cable, you won't be able to insert it into the hole. I bought a shorter cable while I waited for this to arrive and I can't even use it or any other cable. And I think the end that goes into the headphones is smaller than 3.5mm. It means you have to buy cables more expensive than just any off ebay. Bastards.
