Cast iron cookware is the best. It's all we use. Bought it all from an army surplus store. Sure you gotta oil it after washing, but it cooks evenly, lasts forever and is good for your health.

That teflon coated stuff on the other hand… toxic.

    • Are you a bird?

    • Re: Teflon

      https://www.quora.com/Is-Teflon-PTFE-poisonous-toxic?share=1

Worth a read. Summarises the science and findings quite well.

      Fool me once…

They did reinvent the wheel aka Teflon because it was found to be toxic, but once toxic don't want to use it just to find out again it wasn't safe. Humans have used cookware long before Teflon came and were doing fine. Why risk it when there is good cookware out there without Teflon.

      • Yep. And that teflon coating scratches so easily. Doesn't last. Cast iron is best.

        • Yup! I bought a cast iron skillet for camping. After losing my eggs because of how slippery it was(right off the pan), I was sold. Use it at home now too. I was buying Teflon coated pans every 2 or 3 years as they'd lose their slippery coating. Cast iron can rejuvenate as required!

    • they actually use Teflon as part of some surgical implants , so it's actually very inert except at high temperatures, and that is overcome after initial use (cook first omelette for the in-laws)

Nice for steaks. Nearly 4kg each though, so damn heavy.

    • 4kg heavy, the steaks or the pan ?

      • Yes.

      • not sure why negged, i have a demeyere proline stainless pan 5mm thick multiclad even up the sides and it’s 4 kg …. it’s only heavy compared to pans with thin sides.

  • Made in China?

    • What's wrong with that?

same country as your $1000 mobile phones are made in, except here you are paying less for the workmanship of Chinese craftsman and traditions handed down over generations like the swordsmiths of japan when they forge the katana.

      • pretty sure this is some 18 year old (hopefully) mass manufacturing them in a factory for 30c an hour.

the sad thing is lodge can make cast iron pans (although not enamel which is tricker) in the USA with a bit of automation and using US workers and they are cheap in the USA …. and we can't cant such basic things here anymore.

        • @garage sale: Solidteknics is made in australia. (not cheap though)

        • @garage sale: It's hard to expect much to be made in Australia anymore, especially when some factory workers (i know some at a particular food factory in Melbourne), who are earning 130K (inc overtime) just helping to operate the machines, refill liquids, tubs etc etc. Their union is particular strong and just got another 6% rise over the next 3 years. Australia has lost the plot when it comes to wages now.

        • @Sammyboy: absolutely agree with everything you said in that statement !

        • i got two of their single piece black steel pans ….. the handles bend …… worst $100 i’ve ever spent…

they also make cast iron, haven’t tried those as it’s cheaper to import usa made lodge from america … donald making america great again one pan at a time.

        • especially unskilled labour …..

        • @Sammyboy:

Workers getting high salaries? How disgraceful. Bring back slavery!

        • @tightwad: Everyone earning the same (regardless of their job and qualifications, unless you have connections in the corrupt government) Bring back communism!

Well if you are fine paying $20 for an Icy Pole in the future, because the workers are on 150K a year, you can buy everyone on ozbargain an icy pole too. thanks!

Let me ask you, do you think its fair for the unskilled worker digging a hole in the ground to earn as much as the doctor that could be saving you from life or death in the emergency department?

        • @Sammyboy:

          Market forces. Why the angst?

We have several Crofton brand (Aldi) cast iron units — a griddle, French casserole dish — as well as a French Le Creuset casserole dish, which we got as a present.
Honestly, we can't split them. The quality of the el cheapos is on a par with the expensive stuff, which costs nearly $200 more.
Just as important, the first Crofton we bought is 3 years now, and when we scrub it up, is as good as new.
We got one of the Dutch ovens from Aldi last year for a nephew, who at the time looked at us funny. It has encouraged him to learn casseroles, which are as cheap as chips to do, and makes him a star in a shared house.
    Highly recommended.

    • Do you have any tips/advice for seasoning cast iron cookware please?

      • All we did was heat it up for five minutes, let it go cold, rub it with oil, leave it for an hour, wipe clean with paper towels, repeat, and then we used it.
        No difficulties at all since.

    • +1

if my uncle said "hey nephew, I got you a dutch oven" I'd look at him funny too…

  • Are they pre-seasoned or we have to season them?

    • they are actually a matt enamel inside, no need to season ……
I'm getting one for fajita fillings (grilled meat, onions peppers) ..

OP, we're missing the world "grill" in the title.

  • Do you have to use a lot more oil when cooking with these (to stop the food from sticking)?

    • +1

no, it has the ridges so surface area is contact with food is minimal, and you get nice grill lines.

I use spray rice bran oil when cooking.

  • Fortune cookies cheaper at Costco. Get 50 individually wrapped cookies for $8.98. anywhere cheaper peeps?

    • $60 membership for fortune cookies, makes sense.

      • membership is refundable

  • why my missus spent so much in Le Creuset?

    • +1

Because "you get what you pay for."

    • +1

because questioning it would lead to a very miserable week in the house
