Canon MX726 Duplex Printer/Scanner $89 ($59 after $30 Cashback) @ The Good Guys

340

The Canon MX726 is probably a pretty generic inkjet printer, but it has full duplex printing AND full duplex scanning with a document feeder. I have had this printer for a few years now, and you can put a multi page letter in and scan it in to network or USB.

This printer has helped me move all my files, letters, etc. to digital storage.

You can also get a full set of ink replacements on ebay for about $13.

  • Does it do duplex scanning automatically or do you have to change the settings everytime you scan?

    • +2

It resets to simplex when you turn it off, or leave scanning mode, but if you do one after the other it keeps the duplex setting.

    • So if you put a 20 or 30 page double-sided document does it scan that automatically?

      • Yep. I think 25 pages is the limit.

  • Good price for ink refills. Usually these cheap printers gouge you on the ink side.

Can anyone comment on the approximate cost per page of black and white printing? Those $13 ink replacement sets on ebay, about how many pages can you print with them if you're only doing black and white printing?

    • Shitloads. You can just buy black XXL ink, without any colours. Quality is fine.

  • I'm thinking of scanning all our old photos into digital files. Can I use the feeder to do this?

    • +1

I haven't tried it, but I doubt it. I'm yet to find any device that will do this, except for the ridiculously expensive ones designed just for that.

  • Hmm, I wonder if you buy it through the Good Guys' ebay for the 5% off, would the Canon cashback still be valid?

If TGG is one of the authorised seller for this promo.

A store TGG invoice will be provided for all eBay purchases.

Thanks. Yes, the Canon site has them as an authorised seller for this promo. I'll give it a go and report back.

It worked quite well, assuming the claim goes through. I got the printed receipt from TGG and Canon even have an online store option in their form, so I expect no problems.

I'm also very impressed with the printer. It's huge and seems to do basically everything. The document feeder is fantastic; I was auto scanning document after document with ease. It comes with a full ink set with what seems a lot of ink (no starter cartridges). I ordered another full set off ebay for $8 too. I'm just looking for an excuse to print things now. I'm quite happy with this one.

        • @mj7312:

Hello, was just wondering if your cash back claim was successful having purchased from TGG Ebay store as I'd like to do the same thing. Thanks.

        • @Global Nomad:

Yes, it was successful, and it only took about a week to come through straight to my bank account. I just scanned and submitted the full page receipt the store gave me when I picked it up.

        • @mj7312: Thanks a real lot for taking the time to reply. I've gone ahead and purchased one off TGG ebay site. A few bucks more now than your deal but for the features I need it seems to tick the boxes and still at a reasonable price point with the cashback offer. Hopefully all goes ok. Cheers.

  • My MP640 from over 7 years ago is still going strong. How does this compare?

    • My MP640 died a couple weeks ago, replaced it with a TS8060 from OfficeWorks clearance ($80 after cashback). It's newer, smaller, quicker, higher quality prints, similar cheap inks on ebay. It doesn't have duplex scanning but that wasn't an issue for me, as the MP640 didn't either. I'm happy with it so far.

FYI Don't get the TSx1xx models yet (eg TS8160, TS5160) as they don't have cheap generic cartridges available yet.

      • Lol…my mp640 died last week with the b200 error. Decided to not pay $29 for a new print head and bought myself a canon ts5060 with a bonus print head - this should last me another 10 years. It’s eligible for $20 canon cash back and the aftermarket inks are about $13/set also. In my mind, ts5060 is the way to go.

        • Yeah there's not a heap of difference, but the 8060 has double the scanning resolution, and we do quite a lot of scanning, particularly colour pictures, so I thought it would be worth having for us!
Well done getting the bonus print head! Do you mind sharing the price/shop?

    • I don't think it's the best printer in the world, but for the price with duplex printing and scanning I reckon it's a steal.

I did have a problem with it where it was printing with lines missing and was completely out of alignment. I couldn't figure it out as it has brand new ink cartridges. I ended up completely removing the print head and blasting the garden hose through it (instructions on YouTube), which didn't fix it. Turns out the brand new aftermarket ink cartridge was just crappy - new ink, no more problems.

It also is slow to turn on, doing it's little head-cleaning routine, which it also does when you turn it off. In assuming every other inkjet printer on the market does the same thing. That might use lots of ink, but I don't print much and the ink is cheap, so it's never been a problem for me.

  • I have the 9xx series and been great printer and scanner

  • It's no $4 Good Guys price-error-which-they-did-honour 😁

  • +1

I also had the 9xx series. Great printer/scanner but the only issue I found was the ink would dry out over time if not printing. I think it's not a problem with this printer per se but with ink jets in general. I bought it mainly for the duplex scanning function so I don't print much. When the ink dries out, it doesn't let you do anything but there is a special mode you can get into to do scanning.

Some interesting reading if you want - info is a little old but may still be relevant:

  • I have a very old MX870. The MP Navigator software (for scanning) is a bit clunky, but like everything, once you get used to it it works. Good duplex scanner, the scanned PDFs are a reasonable size/quality compromise. Print quality is good, and the generic ebay cartridges work fine.

  • Crappy printer takes ages to start up. Chews through ink if you leave the power on. Got one for my parents and found my 8 year old Brother printer is better than this crap. Had good features if you're willing to wait for them

  • Thanks OP bought 10 I'm going to build a robot
