Would have bought one already if it has a FHD screen and 400grams lighter.

    • +2

yeah why would HP think that a 768p screen would be acceptable in 2017 at this price?

    • Yes much more important than 8gb ram.

  • The Acer Switch 5 was way better. I really bite myself for not having bought one. Got a Lenovo Miix 700 instead.

    • The switch and the mix are very similar in terms of ' end of the day' numbers. The real difference is only usb c charging (the switch) compared to a traditional proprietary charger(they mix)

      • For me it boiled down to price. The Miix 700 was much cheaper via the recent sale then the Acer has ever been. Shame because I prefer Acer but not that much.

        • Acer was $848. How much did you pay for the Miix ?

        • @cameldownunder:

The mix was sub $500 for a manufacturer refurb

        • @pennypincher98:

The M7 is nowhere near as powerful as this 8th gen quad-core i5 thou.

        • @mg_k: You are confused and don't know what you are saying. Or more accurately, what we are saying.
We are comparing the Switch and the Miix. Nothing to do with this $900 thing (which isn't exactly an awesome price btw)

Nevertheless, I wanted something that could perform but not sound like it was going to take off whenever I used it. Fanless design is so much better, that's why people normally pay a premium for it.

        • @pennypincher98: the switch had a 7th gen U series core i5 in it. the miix isn't even as powerful as an ivy bridge mobile i5 from ~4 years ago.

        • @xyron: While all that may be very well, I specifically just stated how I would prefer a fanless design. I'm not going to be doing hardcore things on it.

Find me a detachable tablet/laptop with a silent or very quiet processor that performs with a FHD+ screen and is less than $500. Actually, I paid with eBay gift cards so it was even less. I couldn't see the purpose in spending $400 more on a noisy processor just because it might have a bit more speed.

        • +1

@xyron: I have also an Asus with the 5y71, few years old, and in performance similar to the Miix.
Yes the Switch 5 had the U cpu, and one of the only water cooled ones, so probably as quiet as the Miix.
I would say Jb HiFi had a pricing error at hand.
My son has a Surface pro 4 from school, and I think the Miix 700 looks thinner and runs quite because of the Core M CPU.
I don't particularly like the keyboard of the Miix, the one on the ASUS chi T300 is way better ( but also much heavier ).
Maybe I buy a Carbon Fibre sheet and glue it to the back of the keyboard, or maybe I get used to it.
The i5 has 25W TDP, while core M have 5. But that's not the only component using power.
Last but not least, the Miix 700 has a Sim Card slot, allowing it to be online all the time, without the hassle of tethering with the phone.

        • @cameldownunder:

I don't think it was a pricing error heh; I actually read a freakin' news.com.au article some time before on it's $998 price before they dropped it even further on special

          http://www.news.com.au/technology/home-entertainment/compute…

          and jb hifi's special :
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/357486

          edit:
          i picked up a refurb miix 700 y'day from grays ebay too : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/359959

also it's back in stock with 3 more units

        • @loke: Marketing Stunt ? How do you like your Miix 700 so far?

        • +1

@pennypincher98: I don't disagree that the Miix 700 wasn't an absolute steal for $500 (it was). But it would be foolhardy to compare the Switch and the Miix for the reason I outlined.

EDIT - that being said, thanks to your post ive just bought one anyway! :)

        • @cameldownunder:

yeah reads like a paid advertorial or something

delivery next week, fingers crossed no issues, I picked up an older x360 (1366x768) for $250 screen should be a ton better than it.

        • +2

@xyron: If one would believe in these benchmarks
          Geekbench 3, 64bit (Multi-Core)
Intel Core i5-7200U Intel Core i5-7200U
          2x 2.50 GHz (3.10 GHz) HT
          7069 (100%)
Intel Core m7-6Y75 Intel Core m7-6Y75
          2x 1.20 GHz (3.10 GHz) HT
          5306 (75%)

          https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-intel_core_i5_7200…

The 6Y75 does not lag much behind ( except maybe in graphics )

The difference is when running in muticore vs. singlecore, this is where the U can run both cores at 3.10 GHz Turbo, versus the M core maxing at 2.40 GHz.

But single CPU they are quite even

        • @cameldownunder:
Have a read - processors compared

I agree the keyboard on the Miix from what I've heard isn't great. But it's bound to be better than my current one. I have a laptop desktop (a beefy Dell 15.6 incher that stays on my desk) for if I need massive typing sessions so that doesn't bother me, the most I'll do on the Miix is maybe 1,000.
Miix 700 has a SIM slot only on the LTE model, which I hope I get but think it'll be the wifi one from memory..

I would say JB HiFi had a pricing error at hand

What do you mean by that?

        • @xyron: Next favorite on this site after ENELOPE
On the SIM card: I have a plan with VIRGIN MOBILE, 12GB+3GB at $32 ( 40-20% ), I contacted them, as there is a reduction of $5 for and additional Data only plan. I was online chat, and managed to get another discount of 5$ for 10 month. Including the 4G modem, that I'll sell on eBay.

        • @cameldownunder: i believe there will be some intense throttling in order to deal with the heat, some more over at : https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Miix-700-Conver…

        • @pennypincher98: Theyu had it at $848 on the weekend, then it went back to $998, and now with a 512BG SSD they sell it for around $1700.

        • @cameldownunder: are you sure the grays online model comes with the 4G slot though? i have a few $5 optus data sharing sims attached to my main plan which are still going strong (can't get them anymore). got one in my ipad and had another one in a toshiba portege laptop which ive since sold - would happily throw that sim into the miix if the ones we are getting are actually 4G enabled.

        • @loke: This part?

The frame rates that we measured in the Miix can be reached permanently. We ran the benchmark of the game "Dirt Rally" in a loop (1024x768 pixels, very low) for over two hours. The device was connected to an outlet in the first hour, and it ran on battery power in the second. The frame rates remained stable at 65 fps over the entire time. An emergency shutdown due to potential overheating did not occur.

        • @xyron: The other model, that did NOT have the SIM slot, was the one with the 3D camera.
I saw the Greys online after I bought it, and as AFAIKR there was no mention about the 3D camera.
          BONUS !!!

Model number on Gery's is Part Number: 80QL00AYAU , which is the one I got, and that has the LTE modem build in.

        • @cameldownunder: i think there are 3 models, one with neither the 3D camera nor the 4g modem, one with the 4g modem, and one with the 3D camera. guess we'll wait and see. i certainly didnt buy it on the assumption that it did come with the 4g modem inside (but it would be a nice bonus).

        • @cameldownunder: The Acer Spin 5 went for $675 at Bing Lee, then got price jacked right back up to its competitors at around $1300. Your point? Just because something has a high RRP and gets discounted for a short time doesn't mean it's worth that much.

          Good price to pay? Yes.
Rush and purchase on impulse? Not quite.

        • @cameldownunder:

nah the other bits in the article, lol just by searching for "thrott"

The mystery is solved when looking at the stress test screenshots of both devices. The Miix 700 has a lower TDP limit. The CPU and GPU start to throttle at a rate of approximately 4.5 watts. This limit is approximately 9 watts in the Core m3 Surface Pro 4. Therefore, the components in Microsoft's tablet can achieve higher speeds.

        • @xyron: Seems like it may be the LTE model?

          Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 700 12'' Intel Core m7 8GB 256GB SSD 2 in 1 with 4G (LTE) In build (80QL00AYAU):

          Part numbers match up!
I didn't buy it on this assumption either but would be awesome if it was included.

        • @pennypincher98: Talking about the Switch 5, not Spin.
The switch has a detachable keyboard Surface Pro style, the Spin is a 360 degree style one. Not the same.

        • @cameldownunder: Yes, but it's the same concept. An expensive laptop was cheap for a small period of time, then became more expensive again.
I don't agree with some of the RRP's, I think the Switch 5 is an absolute rort when it comes to the RRP.

        • +1
        • @xyron: And? Did it arrive? Does it have SIM slot?
I just finished installing Android X86 this weekend. Dual boot. And adding Ubuntu soon.

        • @cameldownunder: Mine arrived with a SIM slot - it's hidden though, at the back of the tablet near the hinge.

      • I don't think switch 5 has USB C charging. It comes with normal charger

  • +4

    1366x768 killed it

    • agreed, picked up an older model (5200U, think it has some trackpad issues and won't charge unless sleeping/off) from gumtree for $250, text is too pixelated

  • +4

14" HD BrightView WLED Touchscreen Display (1366x768)

Nowadays that's not acceptable for a $900 device.

    • Nowadays that's not even acceptable for a $500 device.
The 128gb SSD is not exactly spacious for $900 either.

  • +10

Haha 8gb of ram is the last thing I'd complain about. Also for 95% of people 8gb is plenty! Even 4 is manageable. I use 4gb of ram on my virtual machines with no issue; two instances of visual studio and about 20 tabs in edge no worries.

    • +1

Yeah idk where people are getting the idea from that 8gb is insufficient.
