Myki Melbourne Airport

I'll be travelling from Melbourne Airport to the city and going either with the SkyBus Free City Hotel Shuttle if I can get away with it (my accommodation isn't on the list) or going the 901 to Broadmeadows route. My question is, where can I buy a Myki from at the airport? It was mentioned in the other thread that you can buy them from the bus driver, but last time I was in Melbourne late last year I tried to pay with cash on the bus and the drivers just said they don't take cash and waived the fare, no offer of a Mykii. This happened twice in a row.

I got asked a similar question yesterday at the tram stop.

Lady with her pram and a stack of luggage got to the tram stop near Southern Cross station (Melbourne) and stood in front of the machine trying to work out how to get a ticket.

She asked me and I told her it was a shit system and that she'd have to go back to the station or 7-eleven to buy one.

Felt bad because she had so much stuff with her and it was a stinking hot day, so I just gave her my one (only had a few dollars in there) to save her from walking back.

    • Yeah, it's bloody annoying completely confusing for people not from Melbourne.

From memory you should be able to buy a full fare myki from the machine. I think it's the last option on the screen.

      • you're right!
I live in Melbourne and I didn't know that! I've been looking for and getting them from 7-elevens every time!

There are myki vending machines in T2,3 and 4. They're well hidden, so ask someone who works there to point you in their direction.

  • Hi OP

Thought I'd draw your attention to taxify… They have 50% off fares this month. There are a lot of codes going around as well. That would be my suggestion.

  • How did you get from Broadmeadows to Melbourne on your previous trips? Just offer to buy a myki on the bus if they dont have just buy at Broadmeadows Station. Last year their were a few replacement buses used on the smart bus routes, so its possible they didn't have myki cards to sell. Was the bus painted as a smart bus? or just some random bus?

    • On my previous trip the bus driver just said don't worry about paying.

  • How did you get from Broadmeadows Railway Station to Melbourne?

    • Long time ago, maybe 2013 I think I must've used Myki, but it was so long ago I can't remember. Other times I used the skybus, hire car or a car I bought in Melbourne.

      • Just offer to buy a myki card on the bus if they dont sell you one just get one at Broadmeadows station, otherwise as others have said buy at the SkyBus office or take advantage of the SkyBus deal if you want a faster trip: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/321050

        • You can't buy a myki on buses. You can only add money to a myki. OP must have bought a myki at Broadmeadows station to get to the city.

@jjjaar: You can buy myki on board a bus with the following conditions: Buy a myki on board a bus within the myki area and top up to a maximum of $20. Routes 401 and 601 do not sell or top up myki cards.

        • @Normie: i stand corrected, though I've never seen anyone buy one, and my local drivers tell customers they don't sell them!
