Hey mate, each to its own, but I'll pick HONDA over Makita because:
      1) It's a HONDA engine - Not 1 or 2, but few of my mates have been using this since 6-7 years+ and no issues so far.
      2) A bit more power than Makita.
      3) Honda has 4 years warranty over Makita's 2 years, makes a difference if ever needed.

Ultimately it's a personal choice, happy shopping! :)

        You've convinced me
Ill take the unused makita back I boght yesterday and get the Honda.
Dont see the need negs whoever that was

Good going mate, take it easy on the neg vote, could be someone's fat finger ;) Have an awesome day ahead, I'll up vote your previous comment to balance it out :)

I have had this for the last 3 to 4 years and can't fault it. Prime and it starts effortlessly on the 2nd pull.

I’ve had my Honda since 2011, after doing a lot of research and procrastinating. It’s been brilliant. Pump the bulb; set the choke; give it one pull; set the choke to off; and it should start on the second pull. (No puns intended). So much better than all my old two-stroke whipper-snippers. Still works like new and this is a great price.

I reckon the colours go great with a GW-5000HR … whatcha think?

Same have had my Honda for 8 years or so and hasn't skipped a beat.

Same with me,, got the smae model almost 2yrs,, bought from same store, for ~314

I paid $299 when RRP at the time was $360 so this is a great price, you won't get it cheaper than $269.

Why do people love straight shaft over bent shaft?

    • +1

In my case mate, my previous two whipper snippers were both Black & Decker electric ones with bent shaft. Each lasted 4 years+. My hands are used to this shape now since 8 years+.

So opting again for this shape, but this time going petrol engine instead. And yes, I'm only using it for edging & corners, not going under bushes etc. where a straight shaft would come in handy over this. Plus straight shaft ones are a bit too long to handle IMO.

Could be a legit question mate, hence straight answer.

Was tempted to reply "to ask the ladies instead" or/ for the "deep" meaning, lol ;)

        • +2

@aaruu: yeah people love straight shafts on whirlpool

        • +1

@aaruu: it was a legit question

    • +1

Straight shafts get under bushes better and provide a better sweep arc if doing a larger area

      • +4

        GIGGLE

    • +2

Straight has solid drive shaft, bent has flexible

      • So, some loss of power and additional point of failure?

    • One rotates clockwise and the other anti-clockwise, but with a bent shaft you can always walk backwards…

Great price on whats the best quality trimmer the avg home owner will ever need. :-)

  • +1

Bought this same trimmer for $299 as well in 2015 when there was a Honda promo. Engine is solid. Like any combustion engine keep up your maintenance and store away properly during winter season and it will last for many years.

  • will this take a speed feed head.

    • From my understanding, the genuine Honda speed feed works with the UMK models only (straight shaft ones). So, unfortunately no, this won't take a speed feed, unless you are going with non-honda ones.

  • Coupon code doesn't work anymore.

    • Thanks for the note mate, post amended accordingly to prices without coupon.

  • +1

Bought this exact trimmer from this store a year ago. Great trimmer and also great service from allmowers.

I wish i went with the straight shaft though as its easier on the back when edging.

  • +2

I believe Honda constantly has similar deals on their trimmers. This had the advantage of no mixing oil but is heavier - I recommend looking into Echo trimmers, its not on their website but they have a cheap straight shaft that is a lot lighter with 5 year warranty.

  • +2

FWIW my pick is the UMK425. Same machine but straight shaft. I went to a Honda dealer and tried out both and a stihl 2 stroke. Ended up with the UMK425

It’s also on sale but not on Honda’s promo page. Only got added a few weeks ago

    • +1

      I regret my Stihl.

Didn't make the same mistake with mower though… Honda baby, starts first time every time.

    • I tried the UMK ones in the Honda store, but found it to be too long to handle comfortably for my height. The UMK ones sure have more models and options including a bigger engine.

      • +1

I’m the opposite. The bent shaft is too short. So I have to go with a straight shaft. Originally only the UMS had $100 off + all the exxy UMK435s. They only recently added the UMK425 to the sale. It’s not on Honda’s promotion website

Echo has had good reviews too mate, but the engine in the one you have shortlisted has like approx. 20% less power than the Honda UMS 425. Power is a key element for such machines, and IMO (& from experience) greater the kW, more the impact (ease) on its purpose/ gardening outcome. Echo is a bit lighter & does come with a 5 years domestic/ 2 years commercial warranty though which is good.

P.S. - I generally use my credit card to purchase such products. Gives me one extra year of extended warranty as long total warranty doesn't exceed 5 years. Honda gives 4 year warranty on UMS 425, I will get 5 years instead thanks to my credit card. That extra 5th year of course if something goes wrong, I'll deal with the inbuilt credit card insurance provider first instead of Honda directly.

      • thanks for the write up. have you ever had to use the extended warranty on the credit card? how does that usually work? just make a claim via your cc?

        • +1

You're welcome bud! Yes, used extended warranty once years ago for my Sony LCD TV. Dealt with QBE as my CC insurance provider. Works similar as you would claim for your contents insurance. Called QBE first as was out of Sony warranty, considering the value of LCD was nose diving so much, it wasn't worth the restoration to ideal condition (minor technical issue, but still not original condition from insurance point of view). QBE paid me market value for the LCD and I got to retain the LCD as well.

In true OZ Bargain spirit, LCD still works (I don't mind that minor technical issue) and I thankfully used the QBE contribution for my new home theatre. Still Smiling :)

          @aaruu: ta thanks!

As OP states earlier, each to their own. I've owned both the echo you list and a bent shaft Honda with the same engine (older model).

I also used to work in a outdoor power products specialty store which stocked both.

Both exceptional machines. Headline Pros / cons from my POV as below.

      Honda
      Pros:

      • 4 stroke (quieter)
      • more power (better for straight shaft, no different for bent shaft imo)
      • no fuel mixing

      Cons:

      • 4 stroke (not as much torque)
      • Heavier
      • clutch on straight shaft models used to have a few issues if used with a blade / heavy duty applications
      • too much upside down usage affects oil intake (it's gravity fed, using upside down can restrict lubrication)

      Echo
      Pros:

      • 2 stroke (easier / cheaper maintenance)
      • lighter, definitely more balanced on bent shaft models particular - makes lighter weight feel even lighter

      Cons:

      • 2 stroke (fuel mixing)
      • no longer Japanese made (but don't let that put you off necessarily - same quality in my experience)
      • better clutch than Honda (straight shaft models)

For me, I'm a bigger fan of the Echo than the Honda. Better balance and lighter weight are the defining factors for me.

The Echo has a spring assisted start which makes it super easy to start - less pull resistance than the Honda too.

Anyway, happy to give case-specific advice if anyone wants any :-)

Coupon Code is now working again Guys

    • Hi rep, it still shows shipping when I apply the coupon code. How do I change to pickup in store?

      Cheers

    • What's the 425425 $30 coupon code validity till mate? 31/03/18 as Honda offer? Please advise & I'll update the post accordingly, many thanks.

      • +1

Hi mate it did expire at 100 uses but I have now added another 50
So is valid till another 50 coupon uses. Thanks for posting trimmer mate much appreciated cheers

        • No worries mate, thank 'you'!!

        • Hi Rep,

          My postcode is 3169.

Please add this for pick up.

          Thanks

        • @rocktin: hi mate I have added postcode cheers

  • +1

I have one of these, I find it slightly underpowered for my place, so I have a straight shaft, it's heavier but comes with a harness and more power, can also put a blade on a straight shaft.

  • Are these any different to the ones in bunnings?

    • From my memory, Bunnings only had the straight shaft model (UMK 425) as opposed to this bent shaft one.

      • Pretty sure my local has both, and not with the inflated RRP of these shops.

Thats why i was asking, I thought maybe it was bunnings only model and maybe different quality.

        • +1

Unlikely Bunnings only model as Honda having standard model range across all channels. I also doubt quality would be compromised for any model for that matter. Please do share details if you come across any better prices though, many thanks :)

        • +2

@aaruu: I was curious because I bought a Makita drill before that was supposed to be a bunnings variation.
Definitely not better than your deal here with the coupon. I think it was $298 and $498

  • +3

For anyone interested in the UMK425 straight shaft model, code UMK is still working. Brings it down to $429

    • See my comment below if you haven't bought one yet. Bunnings will price beat by 10%

  • +4

Just got my local Bunnings to beat the Allmowers price on the straight shaft model UMK425. Allmowers price pickup with discount code "UMK" was $429. Bunnings sold me one for $386.10 down from $498. Almost deserves its own deal bloody ripper of a price

    • +1

      Good result.

    • Pure awesomeness!! :)

  • What do you need to do from a maintenance perspective for these 4 strokes?
    My 2 stroke just broke!

    • +1

Just an oil change once a year I believe which is a very easy procedure. My usage isn't heavy, like half hour every fortnight, that puts it at 26 hours of usage per year. Hence, I can go even longer without a change. And the local salesman had mentioned some adjustment/ alignment (not 4 stroke specific) every few (2-3) years which was going to cost around $30 if I took it back to them. Very low maintenance required for these units. I'm not a handyman at all, so hoping some experts can comment on this one.

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to let anyone that's still searching this deal that Steve from All Mowers really took care of me with price and shipping. Thoroughly recommend dealing with them.
