  • How does this compare to the HTC U Ultra ?

    • Newer CPU? SD821 vs SD835 on this one, Dual Camera!!

Built looks similar similar to Sony and HTC flagship phones with those gigantic bezel at the top and on the bottom .

    • +1

The newer chipset means it is better in most ways - the SD835 is much more battery efficient in addition to being marginally better (not a huge performance gap to the old chipset).

Both run largely stock Android with only few customisations, but you'd likely get quicker updates and for longer on the Nokia as the HTC U Ultra is already one iteration into it's update cycle. You mightn't get anything after Android P on the HTC U Ultra, whereas the Nokia should get you to at least Q.
(EDIT - just did a search, and only 2 years guaranteed for the Nokia … so they might both end on Android P).

Camera on both won't set the word on fire, but I think the HTC U Ultra will come out ahead here. Although, with both I would recommend finding and installing Google Camera from XDA Developers, as it increases the quality of both cameras substantially.

If I didn't have a HTC U11 (great phone btw), and was in the market for a phone, the Nokia 8 would be near the top of my list. Only thing that concerns me is the poor reviews of the camera. I'd be hoping that running the Google Camera instead (with it's great HDR+ modes) would largely fix those issues, and if it does, you'd be hard done by trying to top this phone for bang for buck.

  • Bought this when HN dropped the price to 597 aroundnew year and then had the $100 statement credit with Amex

Very good phone. battery life is amazing. easy to get 24 hours between charges with moderate use.

Phone is very fast. Security updates coming mid month.

Like the near vanilla android experence - helps with the OS updates being quick.

Definitely worht considering when the price is reduced.

  • I just updated this old post
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/360877

$449.10 from eBay if you use the 10 percent code.

  • Can't comment on the 8 but my Nokia 5 (bought from a previous deal for ~$250) has been great. Still waiting for Oreo though, beta labs says it's not available for the device.

Moving from Samsung it's been a refreshing experience, both have their issues, but for the price HMD (who licenses the Nokia brand) wins hands down in the price range. I'm sure there are better alternatives out there with better specs but just my 2c to say I'm very happy with mine. I would not expect anything less from the 8.

Does this have a notification led?

  • +1

Nice, but I hope the coming 20% eBay code would have this phone - hopefully it goes down to around $400 that'd be gewd :)

  • Not sure why my comment above was marked as off topic, you really couldn't get more on topic than asking a question about the features of the phone.

All I asked was if it has a notification led?

  • HN chat channel confirmed that promotion "Spend $250+ & Get 10% Back in Gift Cards " has been withdrawn.
