does Hey Siri work on it?

    • +11

      You Sirius?

      • -6

i think its more like HAAAY SEEWEE

  • +2

    No ethernet port

    • -6

      USB to Ethernet
Has Wireless AC which is faster

      • Also has infrared which is way faster

        • -1

No IR. It’s a Bluetooth remote

        • +2

@asa79: The included remote is Bluetooth but the mibox has IR receiver built into it. I'm currently using it with a Logitech universal remote.

      • +1

Why the neg to USB to Ethernet?

        • It was your quip about AC wifi…

        • -2

@krisjjorgensen: So guess you think Wireless AC is slower then USB 2.0 based ethernet at 200mb max?

These are now due to get an update to Oreo at some stage this year, which should radically change how they are used as a streaming box (Google Assistant, different interface, better recommendations and performance).

More info will be available next Thursday.

    • +6

Heard that last year to get Android 7….stoped ‘hoping’ now.

        • +1

As he said, these guys said Android N was coming in an update and never came, this is the same BS.

        • +5

@serpserpserp: they didn't demo Android N at CES last year.

I've used the Android N beta, and they've clearly had to work through some issues at the kernel and driver level to get everything stable, let alone smooth.

In that time, Oreo SDKs have been coming out from Google since at least June, so it makes sense that they've moved on from Nougat in that time, particularly given one of the key benefits of Oreo is better memory and thread management.

If it's any consolation, most of the people who made those claims have been fired. Anyway, I'll be sure to run back here with info for you guys next week, the eager bunch you are.

        • +1

          @jasswolf: thank you

      • Yeah I dont believe it either.

    • +1

Yeah, right. Tell us when it ships.
      We're still waiting for Nougat.

        • Nothing in there announces that it will happen

        • @asa79: That's the twitter account of a senior vice president at Xiaomi, literally announcing it.

        • @jasswolf: That Xiaomi Smartphones will get the update, which isnt the same as Mi Box getting update

        • @asa79: read the first sentence, then look at the image of an Android TV Oreo interface.

        • @jasswolf: Google assistant has always been on the Mi Box. Dont you have one?

Nothing in there was the Twitter owner saying that Oreo is coming

        • @asa79: I do, and no it hasn't. Google Voice Search is not the same thing.

Please do your research before you comment further.

        • @jasswolf: Ok so where in "With Android TV, Google Assistant is already integrated on Xiaomi set-top boxes. Now we have announced that we will be working with @Google to bring all the capabilities of Google Assistant to life on Xiaomi smartphones. Do look forward to an amazing user experience!" does it say Oreo is coming to Mi Box? come on show us

        • @asa79: if you bothered to look in the Reddit thread, or at the images with the tweet, you would have noticed that there is video footage and images of the existing Mi Box being promoted as having Oreo.

That interface on the TV demonstration shown in both is Android TV Oreo, so I have already shown you and you have simply ignored it, stuck to your assumptions and proceeded to argue with me about it incessantly. Maybe stop?

        • -1

@jasswolf: So reddit article writes Oreo on Mi Box and links to a Twitter to says google assistant and you automatically say that Oreo is coming for Fact when there is no other surround facts?

Your probably also a trump support based on facebook facts

        • +1

@asa79: no, I'm telling you the different interface displayed is not Marshmallow, not Nougat, but Oreo. It is distinctly different. There's literally a Spanish-speaking journalist covering it as part of a video of the Xiaomi area at MWC.

          Leave it there mate, please.

    • More likely the Mi Box 4

      • The Mi Box 4 is a Chinese-exclusive box, using a very marginal update of this exact chipset. It has been repeatedly been confirmed by people who attended at CES that the Mi Box that is sold in the US is receiving Oreo.

There might be a new international Mi Box in 6-18 months, but they are in no rush. As a comparison, the nVidia Shield has never been updated in terms of its internals.

        • The Mi Box 4 is released as Chinese only similar to the Mi Box 3C and 3S until they release a international version.

There is only slight updates, but there is more chance it will get the updates over the older

        • @asa79: the difference between the 3S and the international version are the OS and paying for Dolby Digital certification on the chipset.

The S905L in the Mi Box 4 lacks VP9 support at the hardware level, making it unusable for Android TV. What a new Mi Box would need is either the S905X2 (which offers Dolby Vision HDR) or the S922, that latter of which would increase the price.

If they start throwing the S905X2 in, they probably wouldn't even rename the product. That you think they would even try and convince consumers to fork out US$70 for another box just to get major software updates is a bit startling, to say the least.

        • @jasswolf: Where does it say the OS is different?

Original Xiaomi Mi 3S TV Box 4K 64bit Android 6.0 Media Player Quad Core Amlogic S905X Dolby DTS HDMI

Xiaomi Mi TV Box 3S features the artificial intelligence PathWall system that can record your habits hand recommend the content what your want to you. 4K HDR video support, you will enjoy the excellent visual experience via it. Meanwhile, equipped with high-performance 64 bit CPU, unprecedented fluent download and fast gameplay is just ready for you. In addition, 2GB + 8GB large memory allows you to install various App, more convenient to use.
          Specification
          General

          Brand: Xiaomi
          Model: 3S
          Type: TV Box
          System: Android 6.0

I think you need to research more

        • @asa79: That's a modified Android Phone/Tablet OS, with their PatchWall launcher overlayed, not Android TV.

        • If that is the case you wont get NetFlix HD on them

        • +1

@asa79: that's basically what I've been telling you, yes.

        • Sorry, correction here: it was MWC (i.e. last week), not CES.

        • @asa79: lol as if you didn't know that about the OS difference then having a debate on OS……. Your banther has been entertaining but as I see it jasswolf wins and I agree with them. High possibility of Oreo coming to the Mibox 3 or a new international with Oreo

        • @Dezeption: I dont really care about a chinese model as I have two of the international ones and they are android TV and if they move away from that then NetFlix wouldnt work
And if that was the case there would be no reason to put oreo on the mi box, as they would rather support their own OS

        • @asa79: support their own OS… Mate you have no idea what you're on about they use Android for both just different version….. The would use Android for the Umm what do they call it the international version you know to help sell there product outside of their Chinese market which don't have a requirement for it based on the apps their local market uses. Lmfao their own OS

        • @asa79:

          …features the artificial intelligence PathWall
system that can record your habits hand

I misread that as "hand habits". For a moment I was worried.

    • More info will be available next Thursday.

      So, whats the news? :)

      • +1

Unfortunately, I've got nothing. There was the official launch of the Mi TV 4A (uses standard Android, not Android TV) in India on Thursday, and I assume the rumoured embargo that was about to be lifted was extended.

Personally I was expecting a media release with a timeline for the OS, as I assume they've been working on this for a while given how much their Nougat development slowed down in the second half of last year. The nVidia Shield still has no Oreo release either, and apparently this is due to lack of app updates that facilitate the major UI changes to Android TV that come with Oreo.

If they can get Oreo up and running, and using the full power of the S905X (a problem for the Nougat beta), it'll be a new lease of life on the Mi Box. I think it's highly achievable, that they have more than enough sales numbers to encourage such on-going support, and they seem to agree with their comments and demos at MWC 2018 last week.

  • +2

Anyone know if you can install the Mi Home app on this?

    • +1

Possibly, but why? Its a touch-screen app. You want google assist, which is not (yet?) available.

      • +1

to see xiaomi camera feed on a tv or monitor

        • +1

hack it to do rtsp :-)

    • +1

I don't think so. It'll probably be listed as incompatible since this is running Android TV and Mi Home doesn't work with tablets normally. Always worth sideloading though.

      • +1

Mi Home doesn't work with tablets normally

Damn, was planning on getting a tablet for this purpose.

        • +1

I believe it's to do with the 3G/4G connectivity. Still not compatible with my 4G tablet.

        • +1

@Clear: I wouldn't be using 3G/4G, just wifi as I will only be using it at home, would this make a difference?

        • +1

          @xev: Shouldn't be but I think it's a requirement from Xiaomi. I can't actually find my source :/

        • +1

@Clear: I only plan on getting a cheap $150- ish one, so if it doens't work it won't be a huge loss.

It's mainly just to keep an eye on the camera that's pointed out the front window.

      • MiHome does work on Tablets. Just download the APK and manually install https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/xiaomi-inc/mihome/
Its what I did on my tablet and also my TV box. Works fine other than its in landscape mode.
To get around that I also use Rotation Control Pro app (which was free here) not so long ago.

        • Thanks for confirming. I suspected that might be the case.

    • You can install any android app, but controlling some non android TV apps can be difficult

  • Can I watch Japanese NHK and UK BBC etc with this?

    • +1

Not straight out of the box but there are apps/addons you can install with paid and "free" subscriptions that will allow you to watch pretty much anything. Do a search for Kodi and you'll find more info.

      • Thanks mate. I just googled, you mean kodi add-ons? Grateful if you could PM me. Much appreciated.

    • Depends. How's your eyesight?

  • +4

https://www.amazon.com/Meiprosafe-Installation-Fastening-Ins… You can pick these up at Bunnings for $3 and make great mounts.

Stick the 3M magnet one to the Mi Box and if your TV has a metal backing it will just stick there. I done this to two of my TVs, and if your TV is plastic then stick the other piece on the tv

    • nice idea. Could just use sticky tape for the cheapos among us!

      • This is magnetic so easy to remove and click back on. and strong enough it wont fall off

    • Genius!

      • Works great, comes off easy but doesnt move or fall off even when tv being unmounted and remounted

  • anyone know a good budget tv box with au plug mainly for kodi?

    • +2

      This

      • -1

        no au plug

        • +2

          AU Adapter

        • Kmart sell $5 international adapters

    • +4

Depends on what you are after but a $30 S905(X) box with LibreElec works miracles. HEVC decode works, haven't tried 4k playback as I don't have any content in that format. Booting off an sdcard/usb so it doesn't mess up the internal flash/emmc in case you want to go back.

Check out LE forums before buying to make sure the model is supported.

      • will check out, thanks

      • +1

+1 for this. I got a s905 box for $25 almost 2 years ago and it's still going strong with libre. 4k content plays alright on my 1080p TV but not sure if the box has HDMI 2.0 for proper 4k output on a capable display.

      • +1

What's the advantage to using LibreElec over Android?

        • Speed. Tho it can be dual booted to run kodi directly in LibreElec which is quite fast

        • LibreElec is for Kodi only, stock firmware with these boxes come with who knows what. Do you trust the vendor?

Personally I'd trust LE more than the firmware they come with and also Kodi is all I use it for so it's a no brainer.

If you require the Android functionality then that's different.

  • Confirm Netflix 4K US streaming with vpn+this in 2018?
Will check rumours next week re Oreo status.

    • Android tv 6 not tablet android

    • You can't stream Netflix via vpn anymore anyway.

      • Huh?
Private vpn, dedicated IP should always work, right?

        • Sorry, not for US Netflix to Australia.

        • @serpserpserp: Not sure if that clears it up.
With a dedicated US IP address, and US funds source, Netflix shouldn’t have a clue I'm in Aus.

        • @YogaPants:

Go read about it. Really hard to find a VPN service that will play US Netflix in Australia these days. Maybe a super expensive VPN can but then what is the point?

    • Suppose local HD Netflix would play reliably out of the box..?

Still not familiar to know if remote can do fwd/backward skip

      • +3

Local HD netflix is great out of the box. The remote does fwd/backward skip, only thing I've found a bit annoying is because it doesn't have separate left/right and back/fwd buttons not all apps treat it as rwd/fwd (eg on youtube you have to press up to highlight the play bar before you can rewind), but this doesn't affect netflix.

  • anyone know can this play movies from local source like a NAS? And can it passthrough HD Audio, i.e. Dolby Atmos to the receiver?

    • +2

Yes it will play from a NAS or similar - I have a RPI hosting media and SPMC (kodi fork) on the MiTV to play the content, which works quite well. Has an optical out so I believe it will pass through HD Audio through this, or I assume through HDMI too.

      • Optical out is limited to 5.1 and therefore atmos will be downgraded to 5.1.

    • Yes It does pass thru audio via HDMI or 3.5mm Optical..(I had to get a 3.5mm to TOSlink adaptor)

    • I use my cinema one for 2x8GB MyBook RAID DAS with Kodi, and Netflix.

Other ones just netflix & Kodi streams.

One day I’ll iron out whole house NAS/HTPC. Got 30TB+ archive, but in my desktop. Clunky.

    • Plex works great.

  • These are great, bought one from similar deal, everything I've needed to do with it 'just works'.

  • Few Qs for this that have this or know the answers;

    • Can you install Kodi on this, and if so, will Kodi play H265/4K videos?
    • Does the HDMI support HEC?

    Thanks!

    • +2

Kodi works. Main reason for getting this, IMO.
      Not sure about rest.

    • +1

I think this is yes to all of the above. Just doesn't do 10bit 4k I think.

    • Yes it plays 4k content, no HDR with Android 6 which I think makes a big difference on some videos.

I have only tried uncompressed 4k MKVs. But x265 is supported

      • It has 4K HDR
        http://www.mi.com/en/mibox/

HDR is quickly making its way to TV, first to set-top boxes with Mi Box. Watch videos in
detail like never before with select HDR content. Witness scenes and characters come to
life in vivid contrast, color, and clarity.
*Requires a HDR TV and HDR-enabled video content.

        • So do you own a mibox and 4k HDR enabled tv and have successfully played HDR content through it?

Because I am aware that they say it does HDR and even has a setting that allows you to toggle HDR on/off/auto, but unfortunately it does not do HDR. Maybe they plan to make it work with future versions, I don't know, or maybe my mibox is malfunctioning.
