Vtech kicked in yo!…. oh wait a sec…

My cordless phone has the internet and I can take it with me when I leave home.

  • What is Vtech like, generally, as a brand? I've never heard of them till my wife's Grandpa needed a new cordless and we went looking at phones for him recently.

    • No idea as a phone company. I thought it was an electronic toy company; I had one of those toy laptops with the cartridges as a kid

      • Vtech makes cordless phones and electronic learning products and has previously manufactured handsets under the Telstra brand in Australia. So basically Telstra phones now distributed and sold under the Vtech brand.

  • People still use home phone? I gave my one up 6 years ago and never looked back.

    • Yep same, but all the oldies can't seem to give them up, bloody baby boomers..

      • Now theres an emotional, discrimatory and not very funny remark…. See my comment below

        • +1

It was meant in jest, sorry if i offended, I haven't had my coffee yet..

        • @limeburner: Thats cool, I was jesting as well using the oft quoted PC "emotional discriminatory" comment, enjoy your coffee and smashed avo 🙂

        • @RockyRaccoon: A relatively noobie to OzBargin, I'm often intrigued by the in-jokes I come across in here. I'm in on "bikies", "brodening it" "the 80 K investment car, "phone is OK" etc, but has not yet cracked the story behind "smashed avocados". Can you please explain?

BTW, you guys have a great sense of humour as a bunch. I lurk around (I occasionally do post too) for the deals, and also the hilarious comments.

          Thanks.

        • @Irate Monk:

but has not yet cracked the story behind "smashed avocados". Can you please explain?

Usually mentioned when pompous and/or oppullent indulgence are mentioned.

Was mentioned in the 'at what stage financially can i wash my car' thread. Housing affordability threads a number of times too.

        • @Irate Monk: Its a little complicated or convoluted, but there is mountains of comments on this, just search

          bernard salt smashed avo (avocados)

bernard salt - was the author of the comment, the rest was either reactions or acclamation to his theory.

In essence he, as a non millenial, was critiquing them as being prepared to complain of the inability to buy a house, while not being prepared to sacrifice their lifestyle, whereas baby boomers are supposed to have been prepared to make these types of sacrifices to get a foot in the market when they were buying.

(Like all generational generalisations they can be true for some but not for others)

        • @RockyRaccoon: I think I get it now… Avocados being rather expensive, one has to be relatively well heeled to indulge in in them, smashed or not? 😃

Yes not everyone is upwardly mobile, and some need landline for things like ADSL, alarm monitoring, and have poor mobile reception.🙂

Likewise if every business moved to mobiles for all business contact, I doubt if the mobile infastucture could cope. The phone network, does service not only the individual moving around

So you don't live in Tasmania? You know when telstra claimed to cover (something like?) 95% of Australian population centres? Well, the other 5% was Tasmania.
I finally get unlimited free calls on my mobile but there is no service where I live (30 k's out of Hobart).

      • Wow that conjures up all sorts of responses.

But Tasmania is all Green, so how can you put up polluting towers.

You need to get to the mainland and see how big this country is. However being 30Kms out of Hobart means hicksville is closer.

The Australian Govt is broke, and after spending so much on Tassie already they cant afford to give you any more NBN as the rest of Australia also wants a share (SA excepted)

Move to the North where all the NBN is. Hobart never had any Harradines.

All above is really meant to be in jest, - just couldnt resist after my pleasant UTas days 🙂

        • There was a tower put up about 4 k's from me.
I'm told that a dispute with the land owner saw the site abandoned and all record of it stricken from the planet before it was completed.

  • Lookng at Choice ratings, Here is my quick assessment.

    Its a discontinued model.
It rates low on battery life.
Comparing to other models it was originally in the mid range for price for most models ($100).
Whne you compare it to phones with listed price in the $50's its about the same for total score.
Its answering machine function drops it down the list like most of the cheaper models.
This doesnt say much - Its the 2nd highest score for a Vtech models tested.
It doesnt stay connected in a blackout.
