Excessive Toll Administration fee Charged by Hertz

Last month I took a car rental through Hertz to travel from Sydney to Canberra.Later after a month, when i checked the credit card transactions i found i have been charged $42.00. I contacted the customer service and their reply was that the amount was charged as administration fee for processing toll. While I am fully obliged to pay the toll charges, paying $30ish for administration fee is absolute rip off.

Just wondering anyone else had similar experience.

  • does the car has e-tag ?

else i hazard a guess .. it was video matching then sent notice + overdue penalty

you can get fk upside down with charges on cc after renting a car, that's the risk of it

    • no e-tag :(

That seems shitty of them, I thought it was standard for all rental cars to have it.

Either way, it doesn't seem too excessive. Last notice I received for toll payment without e-tag costed around $15 each trip (includes admin, matching fee and actual cost). I'm guessing you would've traveled through the toll road at least twice? Because that's already $30.

In the future I'd probably avoid hertz, or bring my own tag/register temp one.

        • not too excessive?? The camera matching in Brisbane is an extra a$1 or so. If toll company is charging ~$15 for matching someone needs to organise a class action against them. I'm sure they're only allowed charge a "reasonable" fee which would be cents, not dollars.

Likewise if it's a fee by Hertz I'd be taking action to get my money back. What does their paperwork say the charge for tolls is??

        • @SlickMick: Well, you clearly know something that the residents of NSW don't know about class action suits. Maybe you should drive past a toll road here in NSW without a tag, and receive a ~$15 letter in your mail then start a class action suit.

Your question about Hertz should be directed to OP. I'm not the one being charged here

        • @Butt Scratcher:
I don't clearly know anything :) I'm just saying $15 is anything but reasonable

Did you not register for a day pass?

    Thrifty (company owned)
All cars have tags, You are charged Toll costs plus $3.30 for each day a toll is incurred
    Thrifty (Franchise)
No Tags, you have to arrange your own tolls, if you do not they charge you the "late toll invoice" amount plus a $9 per invoice charge

So maybe the hertz you used was not company owned ?
Or they just do not have a system in place for tolling… which is stupid cause almost every city has a tolling system these days

    • It was from Sydney international airport. Not sure if its company owned.

      • If its from the airport its most likely company owned.
Sounds like they do not have a tolling system… which is stupid imho
I understand you might have to pay a small premium (like thrifty charges) but not having one is silly.
What about the poor people arriving from overseas who do not properly understand about tolls etc.

        • Exactly. Another way of ripping ignorant customers (like me).

      • I rented a car from Hertz in Sydney Airport in December. The lady mentioned the toll charges and suggested that I add the car's rego to my toll account as I forgot to bring my toll tag. I logged in to my toll account and did just that - the video matching fee was far cheaper than Hertz' admin fee.

Hope you remembered to take it off again.

@tryagain: There's actually an option to remove it automatically on a certain date. I just set it to the day I returned the car.

        • @tryagain:
I sold a car - made sure to remove the tag from car, but they looked up rego and charged me anyway. I'm pretty sure I'd never given them permission to use that info - it was only provided to reference the tag.
We argued for a while, but I caved first :(

i drove across the usa and got charge 500 USD for toll charges, $15 admin fee a pop.

i did ask for a toll pass but the woman forgot to put on my account.

these toll fee admin charges are an insane rip off. enought to make a person broke.,

On pick they clearly say to you they charge you $36 admin fee + toll cost.
    Where you day dreaming?

    • They never told that they will charge any sort of admin fee. Otherwise, i would have looked for alternatives. And i normally don't day dream.

      • I think you find it in the small print. Once you sign it you are bound by it, though who reads it?

        • I'd love to see that challenged in court. I'm pretty sure we have laws against ripping people off in fine print.
I don't know why they made new rules for bank fees - it should have been across all industries.

  • Hertz are the worst for tolls as they dont have etags. Just take your own etag or rent from another. Avis or Budget charge toll cost plus some daily admin charge each day you use tollroads - i think $4 or $5.

Unless you take out the Hertz toll day pass of NSW: $18.70 per rental day + Toll cost. They will slap you the full admin fee if you dont sort out the toll yourself prior to crossing the toll bridge.
THere are services available like Roam, linkt -

A Roam Visitor's e-PASS covers you for up to 30 days of travel on all Sydney toll roads.
No e-TAG required (vehicle matching fee of $0.75 per trip)
Valid for up to 30 days of unlimited travel
    $1.50 start-up fee
    Automatically debits your credit card

thrifty corporate rental have it very well sorted and well priced

  • Yep Hertz make you pre-pay tolls. Any amount not used is not refunded. Many arguments with Hertz about this - taken by business to Avis now which is a fairer system.

  • ive booked a car on the gold coast for two weeks, and after the booking was confirmed they had informed me in the invoice that the were going to charge me $40 per booking for tolls. This meant that i had unlimited toll usage.

I emailed them back and asked them to remove the $40 fee, as i would no way be using the tolls. The obliged and removed the extra fee.

I would not be surprised if all car rental companies are doing this. i felt it was shady that i was not informed about this fee before booking the car. It should be optional.

I guess that the toll road operators have a racket going with all car rental agencies on this one. free $40 if they use it, and extra customers for the toll operators. Personally i dont support the toll crooks and avoid them always.

  • I rented from Hertz (Sydney downtown, William Street and Riley Street) 5 years ago. I asked about tolls and fees, the lady said just drive though, you get charged for toll, didn't mention admin fees. Later I got charged admin fees, contacted their CS saying I wasn't told about it even when I asked, else I'd use my own etag, they refunded the admin fees. And it was a $5 fee for a $4 toll.

Ozbargainers use toll roads? Why support them? I haven't used a toll road since you had to drop a coin in the box in the booth. (I live in Adelaide where toll is a dirty word, but visit toll cities regularly). Always set GPS to 'Avoid toll roads'.

    • Because they can save a lot of time, and therefore money.

e.g. in Brisbane, Wynnum to Eagle Farm via Sir Leo Hielscher (Gateway) Bridge (toll road) = 14 minutes. Without toll road = 43 minutes.

And that's at 6:45 am on a Sunday morning. Far worse during peak hour traffic.

    • +1. Just on principle. My desire is for every Australian toll provider to go broke, and make the transport departments build their own roads.
I'd be happy to pay a toll until a road is paid for, but if they want to make a profit out of tolls then we shouldn't be paying so much rego and fuel excises.

      • In that case fuel excise and rego would have to increase considerably.

I had the same thing with hertz , was not told about the extra charge so I complained via Facebook messenger and they reversed the charge . Bloody ripoff don't use hertz any longer

  • I used my etoll in my hertz rental over the weekend, then took it out of rental sunday night, and returned car through sydney tunnel monday morning. doh!

I called my-etoll and they instructed me to set up a emu pass which can be back dated up to three days.
