  • Curious, what panel do they use? How do they compare to Hisense?

Some years ago Ruslan said his TVs use the same panels as Samsung and other brands. You're getting the same TV without the branding, and paying a lot less. Is this still true? Was it ever true?

I don't doubt that Kogan are paying someone to rebadge their TVs. Kogan aren't going to manufacture their own stuff. Just not sure if it's the same panel Samsung uses, or if it's the panel that TCL or Changhong uses.

    • +3

Definitely plausible, there are only 2 entities making almost all panels now, LG and AU Optronics. Samsung makes most of the rest.

The image quality is further effected by image processing though.

    • +1

Specifications in the Kogan site listing still say Samsung panel.

    • I think the panels themselves made by Samsung etc but they are a lower grade (i.e didnt make the cut for their own stuff) so sold off cheaper. The electronics driving it on the other hand is some generic crap, not as good at doing upscaling, no HDR etc - however for the price cant complain too much.

    • It might be the same panel - but here's what's different:

Bezel, backlight, power internals, image processor (motherboard), osd quality, quality assurance testing, firmware updates and bug fix turn around times, support and assistance.

Also I'm not sure if anyone noticed but the specs show the following:

      Tuning And Signal
      Signal Compatibility 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p

      No UHD / 4K compatibility ?

That's a bit strange. Maybe because AUS doesn't have 4K DTV yet.

  • Blimey.

    Shit's cheap.
