Acer 2.5" Slim External Hard Disk Drive 640GB $74 at Harvey Norman (Vic?)

60

Just saw an ad in today's Herald Sun for Harvey Norman: "Up to 40% off Computer Clearout!"

Listed is the Acer 640GB 2.5" portable Hard Drive again but this time at $74. So if anyone missed out last time I posted they should be able to pick one up this time.

Also listed is the 750GB Model but it's $97.

  • Does anybody know whether these are SATA drives inside or hard-soldered USB?

  • Yeah can we wack em in PS3 or Lappie after we crack the hard shell off em?

  • Would be good if you could remove this drive from enclosure and use in laptop, etc, but these photos show the USB port is located on the side of the enclosure and the enclosure is shorter than other external drives. This probably means it’s not the standard SATA connection inside?

    • The second comment on your link does sound promising though. It mentions that it's a WD6400BEVT drive.

  • Yep, the WD6400BEVT is the model I want because it doesn’t have the Advance Format Technology, but the drive connectors must be modified to allow for a side USB port. Don’t think this drive will connect internally to laptop, but wish someone could prove me wrong. Not going to risk buying it anyway.

    • If the location of the USB port is outside the dimensions of the bare drive, it could be an additional PCB which converts the SATA signals to USB - the traditional method.
