What's The Worst Food You've Ever Bought from Colesworth?

Bought some white seedless grapes from Coles yesterday on special for $3.90KG.

Just went to eat one and I dry reeched and almost threw up.

It tasted like stink bugs, so disgusting.

Half an hour later and there's still an aftertaste of smelly bugs.

Tried gargling with mouthwash to no avail.

I've had some shitty things from Coles but this was by far the worst.

    • oh i missed those fruits too

    • hope you got a refund. I would be gutted. Favourite fruit

      • +3

I did get a refund. Initially they lady at the service desk said she didn’t know what they were and didn’t know what they were supposed to look like inside. I had to google a photo of one to show her. Fresh, white and firm, rotten, brown and gooey… favourite quote “these are a tropical fruit, and I know that some of them look weird inside…” I just said…”You eat one then…” she noped and refunded…

    • heh that's like asking for a seafood meal, when you live in broken hill…

    • I bought some last week at my local fruit shop. So expensive but so delicious. I paid $18 for 4 big ones. I find that if you give them a light squeeze and if they are ready to cave in, then they are ripe and not rotten.

  • +4

Perfect Italiano grated parmesan cheese. It was the first time I ever bought parmesan cheese. I'm a big fan of their mozzarella and pizza cheeses but the parmesan was like little bits of plastic. Ended up buying a proper block of parmesan from a deli and grates it myself…so much better!

  • +5

Home brand and Coles brand meat pies… my god they taste like wet dog. I threw up in my mouth when eating them, and that tasted better.

    • I like the bits of mince that taste like rubber band.

      • +1

And feel like rubber band. I swear they push old dog soiled carpet through the mincer… probably along with old dogs.

        • I like the pieces of bone which break your teeth.

        • Sounds like pig & cow rectums. Awful offal.

    • +2

And coles brand chicken nuggets eww!!

  • +1

Bought some salad. Nothing wrong with it, it just tasted like sh*t

    • As you said then. Nothing wrong with it.

      • still 'the worst' thing though.

        .

A massive live huntsman in a bag of mixed lettuce

    • After the initial shock I'd prefer a spidybro over some of the other creatures people have found in this thread…..

    • +2

Sounds like you needed to have a better look before you buy.

      • +1

Nah I bought on purpose so I could let him go on a nearby tree, then got a refund

    • It's a good thing he was in there, just imagine all the other spiders and bugs that would have been if he wasn't in there??

    • Not gonna be able to sleep now due to thinking about this :(

      • Don't stress for Bob, I'm sure he lived a happy long life after being released :-)

    • now I got this phobia of finding a huntsman in the lettuce when I buy it. thanks op.

By far my worst purchase would be the homebrand sausage mince, the one that comes in a tube. I've only purchased it for 90 % off but even that wasn't worth it. It's basically pink slime and stinks while you cook it. Tastes like deep fried premasticated gristle.

The homebrand "value" burgers are basically the same product formed into a patty and the "value" sausages are a close third.

I've had some terribly fatty cuts of meat too! Offcut bones, beef tail and lamb breast riblets. I've conflagrated many a mate's barbecue with the last one.

    • +4

      deep fried premasticated gristle

Oh don't stop there, you were just starting to paint the picture!

      • +4

…blended with ground intestines and basted in ammonia.

Imagine if you went vegan … all your troubles would be over!

      • +9

nah not really. you would then have to deal with finding decent restaurants that provide a vegan alternative, and also alienating yourself at friends BBQs.
Not to mention spend a lot of the time telling people that you are vegan and why it is great to be vegan.

        • +9

Add to that losing muscle, gaining fat, taking vitamin and mineral supplements, having abdominal gas from so much fibre and other carbohydrates, foregoing all the yummiest foods, and developing a toxic misanthropic mental complex.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

Came for the amusing vegan stereotypes, stayed for the misanthropic mental complex. Champagne stuff…

    • +1

sounds like meat itself was 90% off.

Got one of those cooked chickens, got home pulled a breast off and it started to come apart, there was a big green pus abcess underneath it that oozed out the hollow

    • +1

      Flavoursome stuffing.

    • +1

      Mmmm Chicken Kiev!

  • Recently bought some Beef Bechamel Lasagne Frozen Meal from Coles and the aftertaste tasted and had smelled like an old corona extra. I've brought this many times but never had it tasted like this.

    • Wouldn't surprise me on some of the frozen and cold stuff. I have seen a few times people returning cold foods such as above, deli meats, juices, vegies then being left on return shelf at front of shop for pickup by another staff who I then seen put back in freezer or fridge. Cole's and Woolworths.

Roast chicken with 3 wings. Scared the sugar out of me initially, until I realised 1 was detached.

    • +2

Like the 3 eyed fish in Simpsons.

  • +3

Anything black n gold from IGA.

    • Sugar?

      • I have bought years ago salts and it taste slightly bitter. Dont know why may be my unobjective taste to all black and gold

        • i like doing the ol' switcheroo. black and gold in the package of "premium" goods. usually works a treat

  • +1

Roast chickens - they are slimy, greasy and tasteless. I bought one for sandwiches I was making for friends once, and I was embarrassed to serve them.

  • +1

Butter chicken in a can.. Any microwave macaroni and cheese product.. microwavable rice.. instant mash potato..

  • Rotten prawn with regular price. Returned it and let them smell.

    • Lets happens all the time

    • +3

So the issue was only with the price?

      • This is OzBargain after all

  • +2

What do you expect from Coles?
    Everything comes from storage.
Go to your local Green Grocer and buy fresh fruit and veg

  • +2

Crazy Dragon Prawn Dumplings. The worst thing I have ever put in my mouth. Now I stick to Mr Chens Range.

    • I love them, i think they are very good

      • You could have had my bag. I literally made 6 dumplings. Ate 2 and threw everything in the bin. Tastes like flavourless slimy mush inside very fat pastry. If you like those try Mr Chens Ginger Prawn dumplings. They will blow your mind.

    • +1

I only get Bibigo/CJ dumplings from Korea. They don't fall apart when overcooked & pass the taste test. I get them at Hanaro Mart.

    • Aldi usually has the har gow 30 for $10

    • +1

Words cannot describe how disgusting they were. I emailed them to complain about it and got a refund

  • Mouldy cheese cubes. Mouldy cake.

  • -2

INB4 people say caged eggs / animal carcasses.

  • +6

Had a chook from coles once that had me throwing up for about 14 hours and couldnt eat properly for days.

Lost hella lot of weight though.

    • +1

Better than slogging at the gym. Cheaper too.

  • The birds eye deli range. One if each flavour, the first one tasted and smelt like plastic, the second one was supposed to be pulled pork and hoisin, tasted and reeked of fish that had been left out. It was disgusting, the third one is still in the freezer until I'm game enough/starving enough to try it.

  • why is everyone complaining? you are getting a freebie with your purchase!

  • Sounds like I've dodged some bullets, I have always refused to buy anything Coles or Woolworths branded, except Woolworths garlic breads which are quite good and the coles non-frozen kievs which are also quite good. The worst thing I experienced, I broke my rule and bought the coles block cheese to save money in a moment of desperation, absolutely horrible mistake, was so disgusting I actually just threw it in the bin before risking throwing up in my mouth.

    • Just out of interest, given your refusal to ever buy anything "Coles or Woolworths branded", however do you end up stumbling on to homebranded items as diverse as garlic bread, chicken kiev and block cheese, my little wolf in lambs' clothing?

      • Given how shudderingly creepy you sound I'm rather inclined not to reply. However, my family bought the kievs when I was younger, I know that garlic breads from Dominos/Red Rooster etc cost about 60c each so these ones wouldn't be any different (though the coles ones are definitely worse, I tried both), and I already explained the cheese.

A weight watchers ice cream…never again

  • +1

coles chicken tenders have pretty woeful coatings

  • Coles light ice cream. Blue tub. If I think about it for too long I can make myself throw up.

    • +1

I thought that was the diet part of the ice cream personally. It puts you off eating it so you can go on a diet ;)

  • Those dumplings that are always advertised as a bargain on this site are probably the worst things I've eaten from Colesworth. None of them are any good.

  • +1

Never really had anything majorly bad from Woolworths bar a Woolworths chocolate milk recently which was way way too sweet like they added double sugar. Coles anything Manufactured meat was awful. Coles marinated meats are also pretty bad once they closed the in-house butchers. Some Coles homebrand stuff is plain horrible now

  • These: http://pattiesfoods.com.au/promotions/nanna-s-avocado

Nanna's frozen avocado, they tasted rotten.

  • That rice that comes already cooked that you microwave for a minute or two. I stopped buying it after getting two packets from Aldi with an amazing amount of mold growing inside, then reading about the dangers of off rice.

  • Aldi brand chocolate milk is the worst chocolate milk I've ever had, tasteless, awful.

Normally I'm a fan of Aldi products, but the chocolate milk is vile.

    • Their Moser Roth 85% cocoa dark chocolate is worth a go. Yummy.

  • +2

    Raw C Coconut water

    • +1

I know right, smells like fart when you open the carton, and unsurprisingly tastes the same…

  • Select brand Greek yoghurt. Tasted sour and powdery. Great if you have a sour tooth.

Microwavable meals with meat and rice. Feel like you're eating plastic.

  • -3

    Coca cola

  • Woolies Profiteroles… disgusting

  • Canned mangoes.

It was beyond mushy texture. It felt like I was eating off butter

  • I cannot think of anything worse than canned spaghetti. Absolutely shocking.

    • canned spaghetti is nice, it's quick, cheap, tasty and has no cholesterol and very low in fat, does have moderate amount of sugar. I eat the Coral brand from aldis is usually 65c.

      • Canned spaghetti is junk food. 1% protein, low quality pasta with no fibre, sugar and water.

    • I think that way about canned beans. I would agree about spaghetti, however it is great on toast, which is pretty much the only use for it.

Got a Mocha dare on special for $2 expiry wasn’t for another week, shook it and opened it up and felt a small lump go down it tasted so feral. Was a terrible experience and I always smell my milk drinks now :-(. But if you’re not happy with Coles They refund you if you have kept the receipt or know the date and time you made the purchase so they can bring it up on their system.

  • The Chicken drumsticks from coles, the meat quality is poor and they smell weird no matter when you open them. They are difficult to eat because the meat tastes so weird, its been that way all the times I've bought them from there.

  • Woolies frozen meat pies that contained bones

    • Would have been worse if they had gristle.

    • Coles once had their own brand chunky steak pies… the best ever!! Like anything good.. they discontinued it.

  • Fresh pizza bases, and when I lifted up the first one, found it covered in mold on the bottom :(

  • Sliced roast beef from the Woolworths deli. It used to be Primo but now it is a private label product, and tastes vile.

  • Bought some Berg brand skinless hotdog sausages from Aldi. Smelled a little funny but tasted fine, and had some hard bits in it. Thought it was just how cheap meat is. The smell put me off after a while and I threw it out.

Few days later I see a news report of Aldi recalling Berg hotdogs due to bone fragment and bacterial contamination….. And apparently this isn't the first time it's happened with Aldi's Berg brand.

Luckily I didn't get sick. But the ordeal had made me paranoid whenever I eat cold meats, and it has put me off aldi deli meats for life. Never again.

  • cockroach in Kellogg's Just Right Cereal… Not shitting you. It was roasted. Called Kelloggs and they had someone at my home in 1h who took it and said they will get back to me. A few weeks later they send me an appology letter.

    (profanity) you Kelloggs. Never again.

    • No money? My cuz got a fly in his Pepsi bottle. The same thing happened. Didn't even get a replacement.

      • +3

My cuz got a fly in his Pepsi bottle.

My homie accidentally inhaled a fly while he was snorting Coke.

    • Surprises me there was no compensation/hush money. A Coke machine ate my money one time and CCA sent me a cheque for double the amount.

  • Coconut water; I was really thirsty and expected something totally different. Tastes like shit…

Homebrand sardines in tomato sauce taste shit too…

    • Try the Aldi tinned sardines in tomato sauce. 65c and is actually nice

  • Fake vegemite… can't remember if it was marmite or Dickmite but it was cheap cheap cheap and ruined my nice piece of buttery toast! Jar went straight in the bin and I'll never be a tightarse on brand name items that I love again.
