Holden Offering Seven-Year Commodore, Equinox Warranty in March

24

Spotted this morning on CarAdvice.com:

"Holden has announced it will be offering a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty on the new Commodore and Equinox until March 31."
"The current promotion runs until March 31. Whether we'll see more 'sporadic' seven-year warranty programs, or indeed Holden will bite the bullet and extend its regular three-year, 100,000km coverage remains to be seen."

Pretty smart thing to do when you won't be around in a few years time to honour it :)

Exactly! John Cadogan craps on Holden in this video (I know some people love him, and others loathe him, but he makes some good points):

      • "Dyson cordless corporate fellatio machine that we know as Car Advice."

Love the mix of the intellectual and the vulgar :-) Sure convinced me to avoid Holden.

no mr. burnhardt I'd suggest that's just
not what Holden is it is a failed
manufacturer out of touch with the
public selling French leftovers and used
by date expired kimchi in the discount
bins out the front it is one step
removed from spending the next three to
five years in federal court for treating
customers just like Bill Cosby treated
aspiring starlets and never once has
Holden apologised for the mistakes it
made to the taxpayers who funded it and

    • John Cadogan agrees:

      EDIT: Ha same/same

Bahaha! Looks like we watch the same YouTube channels. :)

If Holden continues concentrating on importing Euro-trash and bottom of the barrel Korean rubbish then yeah, they are in trouble.

They need to bring in American cars like the Camaro and a few SUVs and pickups with factory RHD.

      • +7

Agreed! Until then, they're Holden on by a thread…

      • +1

The problem is 'muricans, in general, don't care about RHD market.

  • +12

So their extra special promotion is just Kia's everyday normal

  • You need it.

  • -1

Don't think this is a bargain… They are simply meeting consumer law requirements.

If I bought a brand new $50,000 car I'd expect it to last more than 7 years as opposed to buying a brand new $15000 car I'd expect that the quality would be less.

    • +3

What a strange comment. You mean if I buy a $500K Bentley I can expect 70 year warranty?

      • -1

        No of course not.
But the law considers what is reasonable and therefore a budget offering would not be expected to be as long lasting as a more premium product

        • The law also considers how incredibly complex it is to mass produce vehicles (of any price) free of defects when determining what is 'reasonable'.

As long as holden can demonstrate their manufacturing processes and defect checks aren't demonstrably worse than industry norms… you won't get far arguing that.

    • clearly you don't own a holden

    • what other 50k car comes with 7yr warranty apart from kia ?

    • +4

      i just got a 7yr warranty on a $12000 car.

  • +2

Destined to be a shitbox just like the Craptiva.

    • And all the Euro Barina and all the Euro Astra's and all the Korean rubbish they sell.

It is easier to say what is good that they sell. At the moment, nothing.

  • Desperate times…. I think John Cadogan is right

    • Their Homebush dealer closed.

      • So did their Adelaide City dealership )technically on the other side of the road from the city…)

  • GM sucks! Bring the Aussie Holden back

  • +5

Would rather try and find a VF2 than buy one of these.

  • +6

    Holden misjudged this spectacularly.
I think most Australians reckon Holden broke the unwritten 'deal' whereby we all got behind them and supported them as Aussie and pretended they were not really American . Once they quit manufacturing in Australia, I think everyone though 'forget yous then' (or the more Aussie version of that)
Putting a Commodore badge on a front wheel drive Euro car is just plain stupid and just annoys customers. They should have ruled off on the Commodore name with the VF and sold this as the new Holden Insignia.
Kind of reminds me a the desperate dying days of Chrysler when they plonked Valiant badges on Mitsubishi Sigmas and tried to flog those. They died soon after.

    • +1

      They died soon after

So true, both the brand and the car….

(Ironically Chrysler is Now owned by FIAT another reputable euro manufacturer - LOL)

    • I think 'forget yous then' is as Aussie as you get, we invented it!

  • +3

Nobody buys Holdens after they stop making them here. So they offer something nobody really cares about as a consolation prize? Farewell Holden…

  • I just bought a new car 2 months ago. Bought a VW Golf but I have bought Commodores before. Gotta be honest, I didnt even go into a Holden dealer when I was shopping around. They had nothing of even passing interest. A big hatchback with a holden badge on the front doesnt really get my pulse racing either. Holden have misjudged this, they should have brought out something with a 'Hero' model. Ford have their Mustang, GM should have brought out a Camaro, even in a small run just to get folks into the dealerships for a look then try and sell them something whilst they're there.

  • Offering something that should be covered under the ACR and dressing it up to seem like Holden is doing you a great service is marketing bullshit of the highest order.

While I do own a Holden, I would never consider buying any of their current offerings. Korean and Polish made garbage left overs.

Note to mods: negging this deal because of Holden and their treatment of customers and Australian taxpayers. A warranty is only as good at the company that supports it. Holden are renowned for treating their customers like crap and the sheer fact that Holden may not even be around in 7 years to honor this makes it a gamble at best.

  • Seems like not many people know that the entire birth of the Commodore was based on a Opel back in the day when Holden ran out of ideas and needed a replacement for the Kingswood. So they designed a new car for Australia based of the European Opel Rekord and Senator (yes a Opel Senator) oh and I more thing Opel was using the name Commodore in 1967 which Holden decided to use when they released the first Holden Commodore in 1978. So don't be haring on Opel when it was the foundation for the Holden Commodore in the first place

    • +1

I would be surprised if any Aussies didn't know that the original (1978) Commodore was Opel based just as was the 1960 XK Falcon was US based. These were just design starting points that were evolved and developed. Neither bared any remblence into the mature products, designed for Australian conditions that they became.
This obviously is a fully imported car. No local manufacturing means the car cannot be car significantly developed or evolved for this country and many would not want a front wheel drive liftback in the first place. If they did they would probably head for a Mazda 6 or similar.
Holden's biggest mistake is quitting local manufacturing though. I just don't think Aussie consumers will forgive them for that and don't give a damn now as "Aussieness" was their point of difference. Now that's gone we see their shithouse dog's breakfast product lineup for the festival de crap that it is.

      • Why do your perpetuate this BS about local manufacturing.

To retool for changing consumer tastes in a highly competetive market is just plain rubbish, which is what would be needed every 3 -4 years based on Motoring writers need for something new.

Holden and Ford survived on Government subsidies. Great if you worked for those industries, hopeless if you were just a taxpayer.

BTW Toyota with the Camry made more cars as well by exporting more Camrys than Ford and Holden together. So why not argue that Toyota would have been better to keep.

Yep keep the commodore alive manufacturing in Oz. Brainfade!

        • I don't think you are quite onto my meaning there.
I am talking about the unwritten agreement between GMH Holden and their Australian customers to be loyal to the (not really) Dinky Di Australian Holden. The implication for local manufacturing goes so much deeper however and there was a symbiotic relationship with Ford, Holden, Toyota and the various component suppliers. Economies of scale meant that once the big two left, Toyota had no choice but to leave too
Lets see how long Holden last as a full importer with no special patriotic support from Australian consumers both private and fleet. I think 'not long at all' is the answer.

I remember one of the teachers at my primary school had one. The Commodore was very innovative at the time…..but then again so was the TRS80. The path of sharing around the same vehicle with a different badge on front has been a well worn path since then. Maybe its worn thin, maybe because we all have the internet now and can see these models years before they are rebadged and dropshipped downunder or maybe its because we are all still bitter over pouring billions in taxes straight into the pockets of overseas carmakers for a generation only to see them pack up and go as soon as the handouts stopped. I dont know but there's not a lot of love for Holden and frankly, all that aside, as Mr Joe Average consumer i cant see anything even remotely interesting in their lineup.
