30cm Cast Iron Frypan with Wooden Handle $15.00 at Supercheap Auto

130

This appears to be clearance stock and so may not be available in all stores. Seems quite a reasonable price for a full size, cast iron frypan. I picked one up yesterday and it seemed alright, the only issue was that the surface wasnt all that smooth and so I would be worried about stuff getting caught on the bottom of the pan.

Aussie disposals has this for $16 all the time. You can look at all the pans on the shelf and pick the smoothest because there is a lot of variation on these pans. If you pickup some !RAW! linseed oil from Bunnings you can season these up like a champ with little effort it's alot cheaper then using flaxseed oil from Coles or whatever.

    • Pressed Purity Flaxseed Oil 250Ml is on sale at woolies for $3.50 (normally $7). unless you have another use for it, you'll never get through 250ml, let alone 1 litre. (i'd be a little hesitant to put linseed oil on something you're going to eat too .. it's probably fine, but kinda in the same way that eating dog food is "probably fine")

That's normal for inexpensive cast iron pans. You'll have to spend much more to get a milled and sandblasted smooth cast iron pan.

For cooking meat it doesn't matter and that's what most people use their cast iron for anyway. Especially for a camping pan like this.

You can use sandpaper to smooth the surface, then season it up good.

    • That sounds like a sh*t ton of effort, unless you have a sanding disc

Well you could substitute effort for money and pay more for a smooth pan. But that doesn't feel like the OzB way.

My go to pan now its all seasoned, I don't use soaps to clean it just heat and water. This and a cheap wok and a couple of good quality Stainless steel saucepans are all thats needed.

  • This will be great for my PUBG cosplay
