eBay Fees Are Too High

hyperbolic headline alert. i haven't sold anything on ebay in YEARS, cause the site is a total ripoff piece of shite, but i did so the other week. listed something quickly with a buy it now. amazed to learn that the final value fee was over 10% they basically earned $30 off me for doing nothing.

i am literally jaw on the floor amazed. like i remember it was a joke, but i thought it was capped much lower at one point… anyway, last time i ever use their joke of a service for selling, but im interested if anyone has a bit of a historic recap of their fees over the last 10-15 years… just generally, like how it has increased?

like 2000-2010 i sold tonnes of stuff and it got to a point where i just stopped. trying to remember when my jaw started dropping at their fee gouging.

edit: for the record you ebay apologists, im aware of pointlessness of complaint, i was aware i was going to cop a fee etc. i listed on the off chance i had a zero fvf offer that didnt work out… at the end of the day, i could give a shit about 10% otherwise i would have listed more carefully… this is not the point, i am more amazed that they have pushed the fees to this level and are still in business. it is monopolistic gouging at its finest, and with something that should basically be illegal or extremely govt regulated — 'anonymized online bidding', where they deliberately make every effort to obscure the bidding process and encourage shilling for their own profit. so yes, im aware of all that, im more interested if someone can give a recap of what the fees used to be like early 2000's and how they've gradually grown to their current point.

'they basically earned $30 off me for doing nothing' - Ummm no they built a platform with millions of users which enabled you to sell your item.

If you don't like the fees use Gumtree, it's free.

Facebook Marketplace is gaining popularity. The first legit competitor to the Feebay empire in a long time

      • Facebook Marketplace is just another gumtree really. Its not as secure as eBay (although both still has traps from scammer) and doesnt reach the bigger market from interstate/overseas.

listed something quickly with a buy it now … they basically earned $30 off me for doing nothing.

Except providing a platform you to list something quickly, exposing you to hundreds of thousands of users to achieve a quick sale.

    OzWhinge at its finest.

      Sir, I disagree.

It is "monopolistic gouging". I swear on the Great Socialist Leader's honour that I was forced, nay, I was beaten and threatened with grevious bodily harm to me and my kin, to list my goods on this infernal marketplace and undercut all the imperialistic capitalist pricing.

My wares were stripped from me and the prefects of this wicked system thrusted upon me exactly the amount I agreed to receive for my wares.

I will stand by this cruelty no more! I will fight for the market to be freed and given sovereignty to the lay people who have contributed with enormous plumes of goodwill.

      Viva la entitlement!

I only sell when they have $1 sundays or no fees promotion.
Ebay fees with Paypal fees on top is insane, They even charge fees on postage cost.

Yeah.. eBay has offer this quite often in the past year. For casual seller this is perfect, especially when it pairs up with 5%/10% off purchase for the buyer which means more money for seller, less money spent by buyer. As casual seller I actually quite like eBay. Can't say from business perspective.

You (the OP) obviously are too naive to expect everything given in a golden platter. In any kind of industry you need to find ways to make the most while spending the least. You didn't do research and then complaint on a company's policy that doesn't suit your liking.. that's 100% your fault

PS: If you want to compare fees to year 2000, maybe you should also look at the economic since 2000 and the growth of eBay & eCommerce since 2000. Its a thing called 'looking in perspective', which you seemed to be lacking of.

They used to not charge their fees on postage.

But all those people selling $1 items with $25 postage killed that.

      • Something to note but Ebay has partnered with Auspost where seller get a small discount on shipping, it's printed and charged directly to the associated paypal account so they know exactly how much shipping the seller paid for the order but they still take a cut from the postage costs…
Alot of people were let down by this expecting cheaper shipping across the board (discounted shipping costs + removal of the ebay fees from shipping) but the discount is negligible when you take into account all the extra fees they charge if anything it made shipping more expensive.

There's plenty of $1 FVF sunday promos and you go list for full price? Yes, eBay fees are a bit much, but this is a result of your own ignorance

  • You dont have to pay the fee if you dont want to
    Just open another ebay ac

    • Have you actually done this? How likely would a debt collector be used to recover what's owed to them?

      • -1

Yes, just change the ebay ac name to fake business name

Guess what, cash converters 'charge' about 30% (maybe more for crap items) if you sell to them. They're still in business because you supported them.

Quicksales is free, but useless because there are no buyers- that's what you're paying eBay for.

Next time, just do some basic maths and work out how much extra $ to list of for to get what you want.

    Yes, they are scumbag monopolists.

Just yet another example of why corporations should be legislated to operate for the public good, not legislated to bring in maximum short-term dollars no matter the human and environmental cost.

    • -1

      Yes yes.

Everyone who comes up with a good idea, who takes the financial risk to make a business successful should be bent to the will of the socialist gods and surrender their intellectual property for the public good, as described by aforementioned gods, to appease the beast called greed and stall the second coming of Mammon.

All hail Communism. I hope great leader bestows great innovative ideas upon me so I may sacrifice my sweat for the betterment of my brothers and sisters of the soil.

      • Too right comrade.

I contributed to the success of eBay by buying some cheap tat, so where's my share?

  • I feel like this should be a meme represented by a bespectacled senior gentleman of African descent, sporting a muttonchop and beard in southerly garment.

if someone can give a recap of what the fees used to be like early 2000's

    They were cheaper then.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you would know that ebay has changed.
It is no longer the place to off load your unwanted jousting sticks.

The private small seller and small business has been priced out of eBay.

You are right, "feebay" use to have much cheaper final value fees, about half what they are now. They had a sliding scale varying from 4% to 7%? So you pay 7% for the first $50, then 5.5% on the next $50, etc that sort of thing. However despite the fvf being lower back then, you did have to pay listing/insertion fees (which increased as you increased the starting price), then you had to pay more fees for inserting pictures. Maybe other features, can't remember them all.

  • They also have to add on GST into their fees now thanks to the Government-mandated changes regarding online commerce which came in last year. They campaigned against it.

  • yes and 12% for non-performing sellers what ever that means.
PLUS over 3% for PayPal payment

Plenty of other places to sell for FREE

  • eBay used to be king but now they open up space for competition.

  • How do you think they can afford to give a 10% discount? They charge you 10.9% and still make 0.9% on the transaction.

I bet they charge the big guys like Woolworths and The Good Guys nothing because they actually bring traffic and good inventory to the site. Without them, eBay would only have Chinese knock offs.
