Looking for a watch around $50 that is durable, comfortable and has good light so I can see the time in the dark. Also curious on opinions of getting a plastic strap or fabric strap in terms of comfort?

Anything Casio. If you want one with any analogue features, try to get one with luminescent paint on the hands.
I would go with the one you have linked to in the description, but just be aware that it's smaller than most G-Shocks.

Im not a huge watch guy, I've only owned 2 in my life. Do you think the smaller size would benefit me as I have small wrists? Or is doesn't matter that much?
Yes if you have small wrists then the Casio G-Shock Classic DW5600E-1V is perfect.
Some owners have reported getting 10 years out of the battery as they rarely use the backlight.
I usually prefer leather bands, however you shouldn't get them wet and they do deteriorate over time. Very comfortable to wear.
Synthetic straps are easier to care for and they are the straps you should use for sport watches.
Don't look as good as leather but they are cheaper and more suitable if you plan to go swimming or showering with your watch on.
As for watch recommendations, can't go wrong with a Casio digital watch.
