  • pretty sure samsung and panasonic have similar plasmas going for the same price at the moment at wow, clive peters etc. I've been led to believe panasonics make the best plasmas? comments? I'm interested as i'm in the market for a 50-58" plasma.

    • I've got a 50" Panasonic plasma at home and can't fault it. Perfect picture quality. Everything looks great on it, bluray, games, HDTV - the lot.

  • panasonic for 996 at clive peeters better tv for better price

  • would definitely go pana over lucky if it goes

  • +1

just saw Samsung 50" plasma for $979 at JB HiFi Sydney Galleries Victoria.

(wouldnt touch LG with a 10ft pole)

Price matching a standard price from HN isn't a bargain mate, if you want to brag about getting a big new plasma tv do it on the forum.

    • wasn't standard price at HN…was sale price

just thought the price I got it for was a bargain so I'd share it…

I'm sorry if you don't think this was a bargain

when I was looking around, samsung series 5 was going for around the same price

but went with the lg coz it's a 2010 model

      didn't see the panasonics

  • Geez since when a 50inch full hd plasma can be this cheap?

I am currently have a samsung 50inch plasma full hd series 5 and cannot justify if I should upgrade or not.

For those who is really after the cheapest of the cheap. Changhong have a full-hd for $788

    • And I was stoked when I got my 50" G10 Pana for $2800 inclusive of 4yrs ext warranty from Myer on Aug 2009..

Was the lowest price anyone ever got then… didn't go for the 54" or 56" for extra 1000$ or so, cause I rationalised that the saved 1000$ will get me a 42" Full HD TV at end of 2010 for the bedroom…

Now my dreams are much bigger… next upgrade at end of 2011 would be 3D all round(65" and 42").. hope to pick it up for some 600-700$ then… :)

      • My next one will definitely be a 60 inch+ for living room. I don't care about selling the 50 inch will just put it in my bedroom

Good Guys has the 50" 50U20A Full HD Panasonic for $948 - less for cash. Absolute friggen bargain. I bought Pana over the LG.

  • for ignorant people like myself who thought LG are rubbish , check ou this review. i know its not this model so dont rubbish a brand. be more open minded and look at the model as well
http://www.cnet.com.au/lg-50px950-339306357.htm. BTW the design of the menu system and how you have to navigate through it is their worst there is and i would never buy a panasonic tv's because of it.

    • I don't think it's about open-mindedness or not but more about reputation. LG isn't a brand known for their product's longevity, my old man's a sparky and hears plenty of LG horror stories. Once installed an air conditioner for a client only for the machine to break down in 2 weeks, replaced the unit with a fujitsu and it's been perfect since.

Brands differ from each other by their manufacturing process and quality assurance and it's long been known that LG isn't up to scratch, no matter how pretty their products are, it's just putting lipstick on a pig.

      • Electricians don't actually install air conditioners, their part is merely to hook up the electrical wiring from the board to the unit for the A/C guys! FWIW, I've renovated a few homes and pulled out working Goldstar A/C's that were probably older than you. I think that's not bad longevity!

I don't know what horror stories a sparky would be hearing about LG anyway, they make consumer electronics; not electrical fittings…your old man hasn't gotten them confused with 'Clipsal' has he? :p

Everybody's got a brand horror story to tell, some more relevant than others; remember, every brand has good and bad models; yes, every brand!

it’s long been known that LG isn’t up to scratch

Ok, known by who; and do you have some data to back up this very bold assertion??? :p

        • I can say for a fact that LG's PC monitors are shit.

          • I've sent back approx 20 CRT's to get repaired, all with the same error, all with the same fix; resoldering a dud earth. And this was over multiple models as well.
          • Also had to repair well over 40 LCD PSUs with exploded capacitors, again over various models.

Highest failure rate of any monitor manufacture I've ever used. Also used Benq and Viewsonic with similar install bases without anywhere near as many issues.

        • I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about mate. He install split system air conditioners and gets some of his jobs from electrical goods store, when someone buys a split system and wants someone to install it, they call my old man. He also put plasma tvs in for people who couldn't be arsed to do it themselves, install cooktops, ovens, dishwashers, all sorts.

You have renovated a few homes? Good for you, that must make you an expert on electricians now. They've pulled out Goldstars that are more than 28 years old? Great, I think you'll be hard pressed finding an LG that will last that long into the future, that's my personal opinion.

But since you know it all, of course you would know more about sparkys than an electrician's son don't you :P

And I'm sure you have also been talking to guys selling consumer electronics for the last 10 years as a part of your profession also and therefore have been able to convince yourself that it's about model, not brands. Not what my old man hears tho.

Yes, of course there are bad brands, Conia is a bad brand, and so is LG, from an electrician's experience, and also from personal experience. If you have good experience with that brand, good for you, but try and not discredit other's experience.

Almost sounds like you are an LG salesman :P

        • Here's some data on LG just in case, was a good read actually. i dont hate them as much after reading it

Personally i will never buy LG anything though!

          http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/Goldstar-Co…

        • @ryang, so you're judging an entire brand with a diverse product range based on two single common flaws on two product lines? Let's face facts, how long ago was this anyway…you've mentioned CRT's, so I gather it was some time ago??? I think you should see the error of this logic! :p

@fungus, So your father is an electrician (tradesman) but he does all the shit apprentice jobs as well as install A/C's??? I call bullshit, you are a liar! My first job was as a trades assistant for a sparky, I used to get all the shit jobs like rangehoods, dishwashers, ovens & cooktops etc; and I still have many contacts in the industry; so yeah I know enough to identify a bullshitter! :p

Like I said real electricians don't waste their time with consumer electronics, that's a completely different profession! Nor do they waste time on poorly paid plasma TV install jobs, there are far less qualified individuals who work a lot cheaper to do crap jobs like that! They also call A/C installers; who are not electricians, they are qualified Air Conditioning & Refrigeration mechanics; to put in the A/C system, they merely liven it up! So yeah, I do know WTF I'm talking about!!! :)

No point continuing a discussion with a liar! ;)

  • good guys have samsung 50" plasma with free bluray player for $996 and also a panasonic $948

Sticker price at my local HN for a 50" Panasonic HD plasma was 778 before christmas, talked it down to 700 but didn't pull the pin on it. So guys, learn to barter and save yourself a couple hundred bucks.

    • +2

      not full HD dude.
      do your research before posting.

      • Full HD mate, had it confirmed when I was talking to the sales guy, they are pretty desperate about getting rid of their stock. Walked away from it and eventually got a 65" somewhere else for 25% off ticket price with a free bluray system.

It was listed as a manager's special so maybe you don't have it where you are, going into a store and talking to a sales guy is pretty good research no?

Just saying bartering will save you a few bucks and this isn't a bargain (only 3 positive votes), don't see what you're upset about.

  • Yesterday my friend bought a samsung 50" series 5 Plasma from goodguys for $975 + $249 for 5 years extended warranty + $18 for a 1.4 meter crust HDMI cable + $58 for a 8 way crust surge protector. (Look the prices for the HDMI and surge protector)

Clive peters extended warranty is $149, but it does not cover frieght, remotes etc , that what the good guys sales man said, dont know, I bought my series4 50" plasma from JB including 5 years warranty for $1000 just 1 month ago.
Harvey norman was ready to do the price match with goodguys but no stock. JB said they can't price match on this
    Hope this helps
Also between Panasonic, LG and Samsung brand wise Panasonic is better, but feature wise Samsung is better (All share, USB2 movie etc) Can connect an external or portable HDD directly to the TV and it plays almost all the format, including Bluray Rips, Great quality. Panasonic will only play Jpegs and some mp3, wma formats
I strongly recommend Samsung+5 years Extended warranty, I dont think anyone will use these TV's morethan 5 years, as the latest technologies coming everyday)
And now with series 5, samsung is giving a bluray player free with the above said price.

    • edit: dont worry found it

      $18 for a 1.4 meter crust HDMI cable…personally I would've gone for a Crest…. :)
and that price for a 5 year warranty is a bit of a rip….

      • Every extended warranty on these panels is a rip. So rarely do they breakdown, and if they do it'll likely be early in the piece so it's covered anyway. Cables and warranties(especially) is the only money made by retailers these days… which is why they push then so hard. Ditch the warranties and get the cables online or from Woolies.

I bought a $200 PVR recently, the guy offered his cheapest HDMI cable at $68(1.5m), $59 warranty for 3 years. I laughed at him and told him not to insult me please.
