Panasonic 50" Plasma TV - Harvey Norman - $744

300

My dad and I went into Harvey Norman (Armadale WA) today and found they were selling a 50 inch Panasonic plasma for $744.

Note that they had a sale label on it saying it was a 42-inch, but it had the correct code on it (THP50X20A). You can view the TV at http://www.harveynorman.com.au/product/1256972647097/panason…

EDIT: The set isn't full HD either, just normal HD.

  • Screen Resolution: 1,366 x 768

    • Sorry guys, but the THP50X20A is NOT 1,366 x 768 (unlike its predecessor the X10A). It is in fact 1024 x 768 (rectanguar pixels) which is why I steered clear of Panasonic and went for a Samsung who still make plasmas with resolution 1366 x 768 (and that is plenty for the distances I view at). I noticed for a long time after clarifying this with Panasonic (who then had an error on their website but have now fixed it) that Harvey Norman continued to have it incorrectly labelled as 1,366 x 768.

Check out Panasonic's own website which now shows the correct resolution:

still very good price… u get my vote!

  • good as a second tv, but it wont show Blu-Ray to its full potential. for the price though, OP has done well.

Well we figured it wouldn't go as well with Blu-ray, but the funny thing is that it was actually $2 cheaper than the base model Panasonic 42 inch. Go figure :-)

this day & age with all the tech & upgrades, i wouldnt settle for anything under 1920x1080P resolution.

    • Don't buy this TV then, it's under 1920x1080P resolution.

    • You'll won't really see a difference. Not sure if you knew how the 720P Pioneer looked better than all the 1080P set? This is good enough for the money already

      • I was being facetious, I actually have a Pioneer Non-Full HD and I agree, looks better.

  • Good price. I got the 42" of the same for $2500 a few years back. Great picture, but I really regret not getting 1080p.

DId the salesman say that from 2m away you can't tell the difference?

Like they used to say that if you sat closer than 3m, 42" was the maximum size you want. What a LOS….

      • so it is correct or wrong ?from 2m away you can’t tell the difference (betwwen full HD and HD) ??
        thanks

        • "For a 1080p HDTV, the optimum 3D TV viewing distance resides at around 1.4 times the TV screen width, or 0.78 times the distance as resulting from visual acuity for a 1080p screen."

and somewhere abouts the article it mentions the difference between 2D and 3D clarity is about 2inches.

        • It's roughly 2.5m for a 42" set; and 3m for a 50". Beyond those distances the human eye cannot resolve the difference between 720p & 1080p!

I do agree with GWH in that (within reason) screen size shouldn't really dictate the distance you sit…I'm just as happy 3m from a 42" as I am from a 55", but I wouldn't wanna sit 1m from either! :p

      • IMHO, it's the conversion, compression and up/down scaling that's the problem. If a source is 720, then it will look better on 720, if it's a 1080 source, it will look better in 1080. My main prob is that hooking it up to a computer 720 is way too small.

I have a 50" LG HD plasma, 46" Sony HD LCD and just bought a 65" Panasonic Full HD plasma. They all look fantastic when watching a blu-ray disc. Can I tell the difference? Probably, if they were all sitting side-by-side and I looked closely enough. But what I've found is that after the initial "wow" at the start of a blu-ray with all of them I get immersed in the show I am watching and for most of the time it's all forgotten.

At the end of the show I don't think gee that was better watching it in 1080P vs 1080i or 720P. All look great on blu-ray (Avatar is sensational). However that's only my opinion and Full HD zealots will no doubt say otherwise.

1080i sucks compared to 1080p what are you watching? lol and im not a "Full hd zealot" i don't think 1080p is the best in the world 4000 by 2000p blows it out of the water ; )

      • Frankly, on most sets 1080i sucks compared to 720p…interlacing is never a good look! ;)

        • "With the 1080p format, both the odd and even rows of the frame are sent together making a full frame being displayed. This means that there is no interlacing. However, most HDTV’s are made to de-interlace an image so that whether or not you have a 1080i or 1080p, the image shown will be the same."

        • i agree wholeheartedly!!, im sorry bean counter but true 1080p and upscaled is not the same thing!!

  • I saw this at harvey norman. The picture quality is quite good.

  • Any chance of a scanned receipt or similar stating price? thanks
