Up to 50% Cash Back on Qantas Flights (+ Gift Cards & Premium Gym Disc.) with AIA Vitality (Requires Health Check and Activity)

200

A largely unknown (but valuable) Qantas flight benefit is AIA Vitality’s cash-back offer, which is available on both domestic and international Qantas flights.

The benefit includes sale fares (including major promotional fares) up to Premium Economy, which represents great value. And, because you’re booking with cash at the full rate, you’ll earn Qantas points and status credits at a potentially massive discount!

The premium gym discounts and gift card benefits, as posted here previously, are also a great value! Read a full walk-through on the program and its benefits here.

=============

How to join

AIA Vitality comes bundled with eligible income-protect insurance policies), which are available Australia-wide through the RAC or RACQ. Eligible policies start at around $8 per fortnight (which may be tax deductible, as well). AIA Vitality can only be sold via an accredited financial adviser or via the RAC or RACQ.

=============

Program benefits

Much like a frequent flyer program, AIA Vitality is structured as a points-earn program. You earn points for completing a range of health and well-being activities. Once you hit certain thresholds (AIA status levels), you’ll receive some pretty decent rewards!

Standard benefits

  • Discounted movie tickets and other partner benefits
  • Major gym discounts at Virgin Active (50% off), Fitness First (50% off) and Anytime Fitness ($100 cash-back per quarter)

Points-earn benefits

  • Up to 50% off 2 Qantas bookings a year (discount subject to your status. You must also pass the AIA Vitality health check to receive a discount over 10% - read more below)
  • Up to $650 in shopping gift cards (including Woolworths eGift cards)
Points Status Flight Disc. Gift Cards
0 Bronze 10%
5,000 10% $20
10,000 Silver 20% $40
15,000 20% $60
20,000 Gold 40% $80
25,000 40% $100
30,000 Plat. 50% $150
35,000 50% $200

=============

More on gaining the flight benefit!

As mentioned above, the flight discount is dependent on your AIA Vitality status level (see above) and whether you have completed AIA Vitality's Health Check (which adds an additional 6,000 points to your balance).

Here’s an indication on how you can earn points. For example, walk just 7,500 steps a day for 300 days a year and you’re already at 15,000 AIA Vitality points! When you complete the mandatory AIA Vitality Health Check (6,000 additional points) you’re eligible for a 40% Qantas flight discount on two bookings a year.

To complete your health check you can visit a bulk billing doctor or visit a one of the many chemists offering free health checks. The check involves Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol and random blood glucose. See the health check form here.

The discount applies to the first two bookings in each AIA Vitality membership year.

The following exclusions apply:

  • Business and higher cabin classes
  • Multi-City and Round the World flights are excluded (indirect or ‘layover’ bookings are eligible)

=============

Example discounts

Here’s a list of some potential examples.

In terms of raw discount, assuming a 40% discount (see requirements directly above) the best value (in terms of $ cash back) is Premium Economy to Europe (London). $3,000 ticket fare (= $1,800 after the $1,200 cash back).

Your post needs more solid details.

So in order to get any discount, I need to sign up for a policy of $8 a fortnight/$208 per year.

Does that by itself entitle me to any discount?

    I need to walk 7500 steps for 300 days to get 15 000 points. So does that mean it's $208 a year + 7500 steps/day for 300 days = 2 x Qantas flight 20% discount?

You suggested an "AIA Vitality Health Check" worth 6000 points to get to to 20 000 points to obtain a 2x 40% discount. How much is an AIA Vitality Health Check, and what is involved?

Please provide more details with examples including total cost, otherwise it's not really a bargain.

    • +1

Like energy plans, mobile phone plans, investment systems. The more complex they are the more likely it's designed to confuse you. Which will leave you disappointed & probably feeling scammed.

    • +1

I added some more info. The mandatory check requires BMI, blood pressure, cholesterol and random blood glucose (jus find a bulk billing GP). My example activity results in $220 worth of gift cards and 2 x 40% Qantas booking discounts. The program also rewards you if you hit weekly targets ($5 in gift cards every week, which I haven't included in the main post).

On a $2,000 International flight ($100 discount), that's over $1,000 of value! A lot less with domestic flights, but you can see the potential.

I can tell you I've received a LOT of value out of this program.

      • To make it simple, please confirm the below four scenarios

        Scenario 1: I pay $8 per fortnight / $208 per year.
How many points does this entitle me to? What is the resulting discount card and Qantas discount?

Scenario 2: I pay $8 per fortnight / $208 per year, and do 7500 steps per day for 300 day
How many points does this entitle me to? What is the resulting discount card and Qantas discount?

Scenario 3: I pay $8 per fortnight / $208 per year, and a AIA Vitality Health Check
How many points does this entitle me to? What is the resulting discount card and Qantas discount?

Scenario 4: I pay $8 per fortnight / $208 per year, and do 7500 steps per day for 300 days, AND an AIA Vitality Health Check
How many points does this entitle me to? What is the resulting discount card and Qantas discount?

        Thanks.

        • At each 5000 point level you reach, you get a gift voucher.
          0: (bronze)
          5000: $20
          10,000: $40 (silver)
          15,000: $60
          20,000: $80 (gold)
          25,000: $100
          30,000: $150 (platinum)
          35,000: $200

Qantas cash back / Endota discount
          Bronze : 10% / 20%
          Silver : 30% / 30%
          Gold : 40% / 40%
          Platinum : 50% / 50%

After your first two qantas bookings the subsequent bookings go back to 10% cash back.

        • Seriously? You want someone to do all the work for you? READ!

You get 100 points per day if you do at least 12,500 steps.
          Between 7500 and 12,500 = 50 points per day.
If you are a Virgin / Fitness First gym member, you get 100 points per visit.
Mind you, all these are CAPPED. -> You can't just expect 100 p/d if you walk a lot of go to the gym.

I racked up nearly 30,000 points last year so to get to the top tier is very hard. (You'd have to do all the physicals, dental checks, and I think even a half marathon).. (Yep, a 1/2 or full marathon gives you extra points).

        • 1/ If you join and do nothing - 10% Qantas Discount and the other minor partner benefits. 50% of premium gyms is a VERY nice benefit if you're in to that kind of thing. That's not the focus of this deal/ post.

2/ 15,000 points. $120 of gift cards and 10% Qantas discount.

3/ 6,000 points. $20 worth of gift cards and 40% Qantas discount. 10% Qantas Discount and the other minor partner benefits as above.

3/ 21,000 points. $200 worth of gift cards and 40% Qantas discount.

As Maz mentions above the top two tiers aren't easy, but Gold (40% Qantas cashback) is the sweet-spot in terms of effort (and as you can see in the example, the activity required isn't too strenuous).

        • How old are you, you probably won't get $8/fortnight. Premiums are calculated on risk. If you're 10yo kids, sure your very low risk. A tradie, higher risk, work in emergency services. Higher risk. A bit over weight. Your a higher risk. Drink more then 3 standard drinks per week, your a moderate risk. Smoke, you're a very high risk. Etc etc etc

They don't offer these policies for community good, they're offered to make money for the company.

        • @Maz78
I know, but this is website about bargains, not a compare-insurance-provider website or a "am I healthy" website. So yes I do expect most of the work done for me, particularly if someone is trying to sell a product. The lack of detail is frustrating.

@flyerpoints, thank you for the breakdown - this helps. I'm confused though - scenario 2 you state a 10% discount, however you say in the OP "For example, walk just 7,500 steps a day for 300 days a year and you’re already at 15,000" which would equal 20%.

The lack of details is what I am trying to work through to see if it's a reasonable decision to pursue. I often fly Qantas. A 20% discount twice a year may be worth it.

        • @b2dz: You need the health check to get a discount over 10% (advised in the post). If you don't want to get a health check done (BMI etc.) it's not worth it for the flights alone. But for many, it will be (gym benefits etc).

I'm not associated BTW. And I'd say with the gift cards, gym membership discount and Qantas benefit I easily get over $2,000 of value a year. Also, as I'm active during the week, my weekly 'AIA Active Benefit' vouchers more than cover my income protect premiums (I only have nominal cover) .

        • @flyerpoints:

Got it. Does the health check need to be done at a certain provider? What's the usual cost in your experience?

        • +1

@b2dz: See your bulk billing GP. It didn't cost me anything at all!

        • @flyerpoints:

          Brilliant. Thanks. This could work.

        • @supabrudda:
FYI…RE life insurance for 10 yr old, not eligible for own policy. Tradie, no impact. P&ES possibly no impact. Quite overweight, no impact. Less than 28 drinks per week, no impact. Smoke, more impact the older you are, up to +100%. Definitely a for profit company but paying for cheap life insurance better than having fundraisers for families who lose parents early. Have met few people between 30-50 that couldn't use a safety net. Cheers

        • @Terbo: any proof? Who gets the $8/fortnight fees?

        • @supabrudda: i do. Late 20s.

        • @supabrudda: I didn't do a quote, probably min cover level for 25 years female, that's the cheapest adult price point. Note that going thru another entity to get the insurance eg RACQ may mean extra cost layer or lesser quality product. Best pricing is via financial adviser unless member of professional group that has negotiated discount. I know some advisers were giving clients free Fitbit too. But hacking the cover just to access vitality program and benefits obviously has different intention, thumbs up for that, with a bonus death benefit for anyone you like!

        • @Maz78:

Can you earn 200 points per day say walk 12,500 steps AND visit a gym?

        • @nightelves:

          No. One or the other.

    • When you first sign up, the status level is bronze. You do get discounts but they're not as good compared to it you were platinum.

Flights : 10% off… But if platinum, it's 50%. But only for two bookings, then it goes down to 10% again. So some perks are worth using when you get up in status.

Endota : 20% off up to 4x a year. Or 50% off if you get up to platinum.

Weekly activity benefits : $5 E-gift card for woolworths or boost juice , hoyts or iTunes.

      • So how much does it cost to go from Bronze to Platinum?

        :\

        • I'm currently gold, my membership is free but I haven't paid a cent to get to gold.

        • @bluedufflecoat:

Cool so that means I can get a free upgrade to gold? And a free membership?

          :\

        • @b2dz: Hahaha no. My membership is a work perk, but you could get free vitality membership if you bought a life insurance policy. ;)… Maybe, I think. I'm not sure.

I had to earn the points to get to gold so no free upgrades, sorry.

        • @bluedufflecoat:

No thanks, I"m after bargains, not life insurance (unless there is a bargain associated to it).

        • @bluedufflecoat: What kind of phone / gear is best to use? The app reviews are pointing to a lot of compatibility issues.

        • +1

@JetBombat: my experience is only with fitbit and iphone.

        • @bluedufflecoat: What fitbit model do you use and what's the % of time it works with the app from your experience?

        • +1

@JetBombat: just the basic fitbit alta. It's been fine up until this week. At most it's delayed by a day up until now.

  • Does the 2 bookings per year have to be for you? eg in your name?

I note this statement but I can’t figure out what it means -

Bookings may include up to eight passengers, however no discounts will be applied to passengers

If I’m travelling with missus, that’s 1 booking with 2 passengers, right?
Would we both get the discount?
What’s the latter part of the statement about then?

    • I've removed it. It's unnecessary. But to clarify, bookings may include other people (e.g. you may book 2 people on one Qantas booking, but only the AIA Vitality member will receive the discount as cash back. Hope that makes sense.

    • AIA Vitality members can enjoy discounted flights for themselves only. Bookings may include up to 8 accompanying passengers however no discounts will be applied to these accompanying passengers. You must be an AIA Vitality member at the time of booking and tickets are not transferable. link

  • So only up to 50% off economy and premium economy bookings only? Business and first class excluded?

    • Economy and premium economy. Domestic and international flights.

  • The point of AIA Vitality is to reward you for living a healthy lifestyle. If you are able to benefit from all the perks, including discounted Endota vouchers, up to 50% off 2 return Qantas flights, and discounts off some gym memberships. If you can do all that, I think you will get a lot of value out of it.

    • Well, the point of Ozbargain is to post bargains. I appreciate the company's approach of monetising people's healthy lifestyles,, but posting something like this with little details of what the bargain actually is a little annoying.

    • +2

The point of AIA Vitality is to minimise the percentage of claims by people taken on an insurance policy. Otherwise one would not need to sign up for insurance in order to be a member of AIA V. Nothing wrong with it, just hate being told only half of the story. Curious deal, nevertheless. Where I can find the $8.00 plan per fortnight?

      • It's from $8/fortnight no doubt my 5yo would get it. Someone over 35..probably a lot more (probably $20-30). Again so little detail.

For those after life insurance check your super fund. It may include it already, if not it's usually the cheapest by far.

        • Yes, I have life insurance through my super fund.

        • Yo brudda, more ill informed comments. Industry super funds used to have cheaper cover 5 years ago, now days they have increased costs and cut benefits and terms too. 80% of time a retail policy is now cheaper and/or better, and you can now use any super fund to pay for it. Time for a review! PS priced life $1million for 33yr female this week, $270 pa net cost from super.

        • @Terbo: might want to tick that associated box

        • @supabrudda: :) no association with AIA, fin adviser with personal insurance a speciality. While the companies make a profit, they do payout millions per day and are generally pretty good with it. Industry super insurance claims can be painful and take months, generally super fund gets bonus payments for lower claims stats…so much for benefitting members. Just want to see people get good info not just hearsay. Cheers

  • Are both members eligible if it's a joint policy?

    • Joint policy for…? I think if it's the health insurance policy it might, but I'm not sure if you have to also pay a membership fee for vitality.

      • It's a life insurance policy.

        • Check with the party you got your cover from? It’s not my area, so I’m not 100% sure of the details.

  • Have this through my work. On gold tier at the moment. Planning a Europe trip, but they're stingey with the T&C's. Ie: No multi city trips allowed to get the discount. (I'd be entitled to 40% off). Flights have to be booked through the Qantas site too. Trips have to start and finish within Oz. You have to have had a full medical too within the last 18 months to be eligible, etc etc..
Really wish they would allow multi city flights, that's what's stuffing me up in getting the discount. (I guess they have to make it as hard as possible to get this discount otherwise everyone would be on it) lol

I have racked up a few hundred $$ worth of JB vouchers in the last 18 months though, heaps of Boost juice vouchers and Woolworths cards. It very easy to rack up the points if you have it linked to your Fitbit or similar device.

    • They'd go broke with multi-city flights! ;)

The best value (in terms of $ cash back) is Premium Economy to Europe (London). $3,000 ticket fare (= $1,800 after the $1,200 cash back you'll receive).

      • Multi cities aren't eligible but an inevitable stopover on the way to Europe is.

      • Buying premium economy with this 40% discount voucher, you can still use points to upgrade to Business after? Assuming its an upgrade-able fare?

        • I honestly don't know (I am not associated). But I like the way you're thinking. I don't see any reason why not, as you'd have the Premium Economy eticket (which is what you're required to submit for the cash back).

But you should obviously double check.

        • I've been looking into it but it's all too hard TBH. All the flights to Europe I'm looking at this July are bloody expensive (Peak season, I know). Upgrading with Qantas is tough too unless you're top tier QFF.

        • Yes you can. As long as you booked a fare that is eligible for an upgrade.
          I've done this before.

        • @matt90:

Can you upgrade at the counter or it hs to be through points?

    • Can you pay in QFF points?

      • +2

        No

    • What kind of phone and gear do you use and how reliable does it work?

  • +1

There is a lot of issues with their app. The points does not reflect from Apple Watch or Fitbit to their app

    • I've used it for 6 months now and up until last week, I'd say that it was fine. I've had some trouble in the last week :(

      • I still have the problem.. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, disconnected the Apple Watch and reconnected.. If I walk 5 days, only 2 or 3 days get recorded..

        • +1

          Have you contacted them?

In my case, I was missing Sunday and Wednesday's points. But recently my Sunday points just got updated. Hoping my Wednesday points will get credited soon.

Have you tried un-linking and re-connecting the membership via the website? I couldn't do it from the app but had some trouble there too.

    • I've had no problems in 18~ months of use linked to the Fitbit app

  • Also, you can get AIA Vitality membership if you buy their Health insurance product (myOwn). Probably a lot less complicated than buying life insurance

  • Thanks for doing the post. It's very helpful as I was always keen to learn what Aia discounts were all about.

  • +2

A colleague mentioned to me at work about this and I joined not long after. The woolies vouchers every week pretty much covers the insurance so fore free life insurance + all the other perks that come with it.

    • What kind of phone + gear do you use to record the workout?

      • +1

        Xiaomi amazfit pace, iphone.

  • Hi, this is interesting.
I currently go to Anytime Fitness. If I sign up to some cheap life insurance would that mean I would save money if I buy a policy that is <$400 a year? ($100 cashback each quarter).

Reading the deal, it seems like it only applies to new members doesn't directly specify it.
"As an AIA Vitality member you can enjoy this benefit at a special monthly fee when you sign up for a 12-month term.
Pay a discounted once-off joining fee and purchase a gym key to gain access to any of our Anytime Fitness clubs.
AIA Vitality will reward you for being active. Work out at Anytime Fitness on at least 24 separate days in a rolling 91-day period, and receive cash back per quarter."

Also, would get the other benefits like the Qantas offer, and other vouchers which seems worth it.

    • I don't think life insurance is that cheap but if your premium is less than that, it could work!

Qantas offer comes with vitality so if you've got it then yes.

      • I guess it just depends on your situation. For me, i can get $8/fortnight so it works great

        • How long have you had it for now?

I just checked and an online quote for RAC was $8.35 a fortnight for the least cover for life insurance which is just over $200 a year.

Seems like i would make much more in savings. Is there anything that could go wrong?

        • @videlity:

I haven't signed up but I intend to in the next few days when my current gym membership ends so I can sign up to Anytime Fitness. My quote is also $8.35 per fortnight.

I guess the only thing that could go wrong is say you don't actually go to the gym as often so you cant claim the cashback.

    • If you have an existing Anytime Fitness membership, simply contact your club and you will be upgraded to a new 12 month minimum term. link

I wonder what the AF weekly rate will be through this deal.

      • When you sign-up you'll get a 50% off joining fee and 10% off monthly membership with a minimum 12 month contract. Then purchase a gym key which allows you access to any of our clubs after the first 31 days in your home club. You will then receive $100 cashback from AIA for attending 24 times at the gym per quarter. In addition, you earn 100 AIA Vitality points per gym visit.

        • Hi bluedufflecoat, I am interested in joining AIA to get the 50% discount Virgin Active’s Active Me Flexible membership. Question is whether the 50% discount applies for the entire 12 months (duration of the ACtive me long term membership)?

        • @barbedwire:

You will need to pay the one-off activation fee and pro rata membership fees to the next billing date when you sign up. After this initial payment, your membership fees will be debited every two weeks. If your AIA Vitality membership ends, your Virgin Active membership fee will revert to the standard retail rate. link

        • @barbedwire: sorry, I don't know. My guess is the discount is valid as long as you have an active vitality membership.

        • @JetBombat:thanks

        • +1

I signed up to Anytime Mitcham, they were offering 50% off joining fee, so they ended up giving me $0 joining fee.

  • +3

Aia Vitality program is the best thing I ever discovered! It sounded way too good to be true but the benefits are all real.

    My brief benefits received:

Joined Anytime fitness for $62/month on a 12 month plan. If i go to the gym 24 times within a quarter, I get $100 cash back. Therefore I'll get $400 back in a year.
Gym ends up being around $28 a month.

If i exercise 3 times a week, I also get a $5 weekly gift card, which is separate to the gift cards received when you reach certain points thresholds.

I also regularly fly, and now being Platinum, I get 50% off flights booked via the Qantas website even if its a sale fare. It doesnt even have to be a Qantas plane.

    • Was it easy getting to Platinum?

      • +2

        Yes it was, very easy.
You can turn on Strava on your phone to start a running/cycling activity to collect 100 points.
Some people may be "running not driving" at 100km/h for 30mins and points are collected. Of course, doing real fitness is the whole aim of the game!

I'm really glad I found out about this program because it certainly sounded way too good to be true.

I've just booked another overseas Qantas flight on the weekend, cost me about $1,800, and I'll get $900 cash back in a week or so. Tell me another company that can give 50% off flights!

        • Did you get life insurance through their financial advisor or did you source your own?

        • @nightelves:

Signed up with RACQ and then AIA vitality

        • Do you have to link Strava to an Apple Watch ot Fitbit?

        • Hi Matt did you have to link your Strava to your iphone to get it to work?

        • @nightelves:

yeah you do, its quite simple to do.
The AIA app reads the information from Strava.

  • Their website doesn't say anything about Fitness First Titanium (the Barangaroo gym is titanium)… I checked every web page and even the benefits guide. Some of them mention Black, but not Titanium. Is that just an omission, since there's only 1 Titanium FF gym out there? Or will they actually exclude the Barangaroo FF?

  • Another question: can someone in Sydney join RAC or RACQ? Or are they limited to WA/QLD?

  • thanks Op. registered for the AIA Vitality and looking forward to saving big bucks in my Virgin ACtive Membership ;)

  • Thanks for all the info! Just signed up for life insurance with RAC for $10.04 per fortnight (I'm in Sydney so it must not be limited to WA). Hopefully I can register for AIA vitality and start earning my points and tiers ASAP.

Cheeky (true ozbargain style) question: Is there any gold member that isn't going to use their Endota voucher discount that would gift it to me please?

  • Looks like a great deal, however I'm a bit uneasy with providing them with medical information over a long period. It looks to me like to get anything decent you'd need to do the annual "AIA Vitality Health Check", which you provide them with:
    - "The health check consists of measures of your Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, cholesterol and random blood glucose."

I have neither a medical nor an insurance background, but does anyone have any insight into the likelihood that could be used for any nasty stuff in the future (e.g. refusing insurance / anything else)?

Their privacy policy is pretty free and loose, so I wouldn't count on the information just being kept with them.

  • Do you know when you actually get credited the 50 points daily?

    • Daily? Have you linked your fitbit etc to the app?

      • Yeah I linked my Apple Health app. Completed the 7500 steps for today but not seeing anything.

Also the health check seems to be that you get 750 points for each health check AND an additional 750 points if you’re in the healthy range. So technically it’s upto 6000 points.

        • Not sure about the Apple health app. Try logging in on the website? The app has been pretty average for me, lately.

Yes, up to 6000 points. They check blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and bmi, each check is 750points, and if you are in the healthy range, it’s another 750 points for each measure.

          Skin check - 1000 points.
Non smoker declaration - 1000 points.
Mental health check- more points, possibly 1,000; can’t remember exactly,

Also, if you log your sleep, it’s another 10 points a day, up to 2,000 points a year. I just worked that one out a few weeks ago. :p

Another easy one is logging your food intake. You get 1200 points, up to 4x a year, once every 3 months.

  • How do you log your sleep? Matt mentioned something about Strava however my apps showing pending for some reason.

    • I do mine on the Fitbit app. Not sure about the others.
