How Much Do You Spend on Haircut and How Frequently

I had always lived in the CBD area be it Melbourne or Sydney and used to have the 10-15 dollar hair cut near Sydney town hall station or Melbourne central. The fact that the whole affair took around 10-15 min made the experience even better.

Moved to the suburbs recently and haven't yet been able to find a cheaper deal, spending 25 dollars on a hair cut every month. That has got me thinking about our community members. How much do you spend on a hair cut and how frequently?

I am a male who is not 100% on the hair cut prices for women so don't blame me if the figures are not accurate.

you poll is missing the $0 option

    i haven't had a haircut in 6 years.

    • Never really thought about that .. It's added now

    • +17

I dont know why but i'm just imagining disgusting hippy hair

      • +3

        $0 cost hippy hair, man.

        • +1

          $0 in income too!

        • @jared444: Na man we sell green dragon $$$$ and zero TAX man

        • I buzzcut my hair every ~5 weeks. It takes 10mins and is an easy thing to do. Just make sure you have someone quickly check it for you in case you miss a bit.

      • +14

Not sure about altomic, but I cut my own hair - and have for years. I bought a set of clippers years ago and they still work. I have a set of hair scissors, but they're a pretty recent addition, previously I just used household scissors.

Mens' haircuts are really not that hard.

        • +3

Even with that giant head of yours?

Seriously though, how the hell do you cut you own hair in a way that's not just "3 all over"

        • +1

@johnno07: I started off just cutting my hair with a pair of scissors. Basically, brush it straight, grab a bit, cut to desired length. Continue until all hair is cut. I used to use about finger width as a guide for the bits I couldnt' see. This didn't look great, but my hair has a wave, and by the time I put gel or wax in it you couldn't tell if it wasn't perfect.

Then I bought a set of clippers with adjustable combs that go up to about 3cm in length. I do short around the sides, and longer on top.

Now I don't really use the clippers on top, I go short around the sides, and do the top with scissors and leave it pretty long.

Clippers don't really cut with the grain, only against it, especially once you start using longer combs. Knowing this you can control which parts you clip, even on the back of your head. I usually get my wife to double check the back to make sure I haven't left any bits, but it's now pretty rare that she has to do anything.

        • I've now become quite good at cutting my own hair using clippers. But before that found it to be between $7 and $15 where in lived in a western Sydney suburb. My current suburb is between $12 to $50.

    • +1

Did Deliliah cut your hair 6 years ago?

    • Me too. Have cut my own hair forever now. I can even do styles but sometimes have to get someone else to make sure the back is ok.
I can do other people too. It's not hard, you just need proper scissors and a comb and a brain.

    • +1

Zero dollars every 2-3 weeks. Not that I have a fancy hair style (I keep it short) but it's easy to do it myself after some practice. Don't even have to go out of the house and line up and wait.

      • Im curious now as to how your hair looks.

    • +1

Same. I think the last haircut I paid for was 11 years ago.
Mum cuts my hair for free in the convenience of our own home. She's not a barber. Doesn't take skills to be one…

      • +1

        Flashbacks to bowl cuts

    • yup my hair cut is $20. but i've had three in the last five years. most of the time i wait till it gets long enough to bother me and self clipper it back to a number 4 on top and 2 at the back.

    • Bald hair won't cost any cent to maintain. :)

    Haircut? Hair? :)

Does he have a scab instead of hair?

        • +1

Only in the pubis region, he goes very hard.

    • +3

I remember that stuff. It's so cool!!

  • +1

    Depends on which suburb…

  • +1

    $12 down at my local

  • +2

Melbourne CBD - $10 every fortnight.

    • Elizabeth St?

      • +1

Tivoli Arcade, Bourke St. There's a bunch of shops in there for $10! Quick and easy!

        • +2

Thanks for the tip! There's three hairdressers on Elizabeth St between A'Beckett and Franklin that do $10 men's cuts Monday-Wednesday too.

        • @dazweeja: Guess, they use machine and not scissor.

        • @dazweeja: I think those at the top end of Elizabeth St have upped their prices now. Jets is $12.99 Mon to Wed. The other is $15 ($10 is just for a buzz cut but they don't make it clear). Not sure what the third is charging. Most use clippers on back an side and scissors on top.

  • $30, once every 4-6 months. Maybe you should have specified length? Lots of places have different prices for short/medium/long hair.

  • +7

I spend nothing on cut and color - partner is a hairdresser =)

    • +58

      high yield investment

      • +5

I'd say! She does all my family members hair as well.

      • +2

high maintenance investment to get a haircut…..

    • +14

Are you willing to share your partner?

      • -1

        😏

        • Most i ever spent on a haircut before my partner : $65.

  • +28

Wife does it for me every 6 weeks or so, she's not very good so I get a different haircut each time. I had a lot of comments at work after the last one saying I don't normally cut my hair that short so I had to explain to everyone that my wife accidentally cut it too short at the front so she had to even it out all over.

    • Haha I do my boyfriend's hair but I always do it the same every time. Number 3 all over then number 2 on back and sides.

      • +1

Same haircut as me then, how can she get it so wrong? Please don't tell her I said this cause that will be the end of free haircuts for me!

        • +7

My first pair of clippers came with a DVD and I copied the easiest hair cut it had, and did that ever since.

        • Some clippers really suck I clip my beard and it often gets (profanity) up with my current set.

        • While my wife was pregnant and unwell I cut my own hair with the clippers. No2 all over. Got her to check and she said I'd missed a bit so I went back outside to correct the missed section, but forgot to put the No2 thingy back on and went to zero in a small section up the back of my head. Needed correcting - all over back to zero.

        • yup. you can tell when the person clippering your hair forgot to put the comb back on. the moment of silence, pause in cutting, reach for the plastic clip to put it back on, continuing working as if nothing had happened.

    • +2

Get her to use the same mixing bowl each time. You'll have the perfect Blackadder cut…

  • $25 + a massage :)

    • +1

      What type of massage ;)

      • +11

One that makes me very happy at the end. Neck and head massage.

Also forgot to mention a free stubbie or coffee.

        • +21

          which head ?

        • +10

@phunkydude: If I was Tasmanian I'd say both?

  • +1

    $8, every 5-6 weeks.

    • +1

      suburb name?

      • +1

Springy. The small one opposite the fish shop

        • +1

          Springvale, VIC? or Springwood, NSW?

        • +3

          @virhlpool: or Springfield, Ohia Maude…

        • @virhlpool: VIC by the looks of profile. Just click on their name, says what state they're from fyi

      • Footscray, Vic

      • Yes, it's in Springvale Victoria. It's called 'Tammy Le', in the meat/fish area.

  • +6

$75 once on some clippers and then i get it done every 3-4 weeks for $0 by my gf

    • +20

I've found there's always a cost if my girlfriend does something for me.

      • Relationships 101

  • +9

I'm voting for $0 as well. After a small initial investment for the clippers I either do it myself or get someone else to do it. I'm not interested in styling it so just a simple clip cut will do me just fine.

I usually cut it every 6 weeks.

  • $10 every two weeks

  • Average I pay for a proper barber cut with fade is $30. Some places will charge ~$20 if you're coming in regularly to get fixed up.

    • how often?

      • +1

When I got a discount I was going in once every 2 weeks, basically as soon as the fade started to grow out. Save your money and go once every 4 IMO.

        • Will i go bald if i get a fade every fortnite/three weeks? Since I've been going in more frequently I've noticed some hair loss especially at my corners. Im thinking that could be from going in too often. I almost use to go every 10 days because the fade grows out quick.

        • +2

          @TheBlackPanther:
Yup getting your hair cut frequently will most definitely send you bald.

        • +1

@TheBlackPanther: No it definitely will not send you bald more quickly although perhaps a fade will make it more noticeable. If anything you're stimulating your follicles which is a good thing.

        • @brendanmoran: Why is that? the guy underneath says it will stimulate your follicles. I get my hair cut every 2-3 weeks. And I apply hair oil but it doesnt seam like its working.

        • @Cheaplikethebird: Are you sure? Maybe its doing more harm than good. Im afraid if I keep cutting it than it might get worse. My edges are already going backwards and Im only 22. I need a solution and quickly.

        • +1

          @TheBlackPanther:
Sorry, sarcasm doesn’t translate well on the internet. I am bald bald bald and started going bald at 19 years old. If it’s happening, it’s happening and cutting or not cutting won’t make a difference. Your hair doesn’t know if it’s been cut or not. I would love it if I could get a stylish haircut so my advice would be, get your haircut as often as you want however you like it before it’s too late for you!

        • @TheBlackPanther: Grow a beard

        • @Cheaplikethebird: Bahahahah I look terrible with a beard. I need some magic pill to make my hair grow again

        • @brendanmoran: I guess the only thing left to do is to get a hair transplant.

        • @TheBlackPanther: A wise man once told me, it's not about getting less hair, it's about getting more head.

    • Do you have a beard? I just googled fade and they all had beards. And an above average frequency of nose piercings and tattoos. May have all been male models though.

      Pretty fancy anyway.

  • +4

I cut my own hair with clippers. $0 and much quicker than waiting for a hair-cutting-person.
Yes, I even do the back myself, with the aid of two mirrors - and no smoke.

I usually cut it once it starts getting annoying. Maybe once or twice a year.

    • This is me, I've had friends who did it for 10 bucks quickly just round the corner but I just don't care enough to ever spend anytime doing it. Last year I went from dreads to the dusty marts on GF day.

  • +2

Shave my head once a week. #0 from the sideburns up.

    • +1

Same, I do it myself and get my gf to check it over to make sure I didn't miss any.

Sometimes I give myself the old man haircut or mohawk and call her in to check just for laughs.

  • +1

    $33 approx every 6 weeks.

Short back and sides which I can clipper myself. Top gets a bit tough eventually so I go to the professionals to fix it up.

    • Sides and tops are easy, back is tricky

  • +4

Really annoying for me as I have long hair, but I usually just want to trim the ends and fringe. They charge me for a full length haircut (about $60) . Maybe their shampoo is made out of gold or something…

  • maybe every two-three weeks. I guess Im on the more frequent end though now that i think of it. It might just explain why im going bald so quick.

  • +3

This is a silly poll, since female haircuts cost more than male ones. Male ones can also be done easily at home.

    • What about a dude with long hair?

      • +1

True - maybe should be separated into people who get their hair cut with clippers and those who get it cut with scissors.

        • What about people who get it done with both?
Are you assuming my preferences for hair cuts?

        • @manshrew: both can equal clippers - are you one of those hipster people with half shaved and half not? :-p

        • @Quantumcat: I prefer the Nohawk.
It gives off that vibe of "I don't know what stage of my life I should be in, so let's just screw it all up" that I really find inspiring.

  • +2

what disturbed me most was the order in which that poll was compiled

male, short hair $30 every 6 weeks by the same hair stylist for the last 20 years

    • +3

      2 things.

First, that is an expensive haircut for 1998.

Second, top hairdresser for not raising their prices each year.
