    $24.92 for 6.67GB per month

    • +4

Woolies offers 5GB per 30 days for $27. No lock in contract.

      • Still considerably cheaper and there is no wasted quota at the ends of each month so it's a lot better.

Month to month with unused quota rollover would be better though of course.

        • +3

Woolworths has a data bank so unlikely to have wasted quota. If you buy vouchers in store with discounted wish cards it comes down to $25.65 per 30 days. For less than $1 per month I'd go with the flexibility of month to month unless you really need that extra 1.66GB.

        • +3

          @sween64:

          +1

Being locked into a contact is one thing. Paying for a year up front is another. I don't like both, but the latter is worse.

    • Compare $12.50 per month and 6 GB/30 days with the Kogan Mobile "2 for 1" MEDIUM 365 days deal $299. Just have to find someone to go halvers with you ($149.50) to benefit from this latest Kogan deal.

If you find Vodafone works fine for you then I can vouch that Kogan Mobile will too; ported 2 Vodafone prepaid accounts over to Kogan in January when there were some good discounts.

  • +8

Also worth considering - Kogan Unlimited (365 Days | 6GB) - Buy One Get One Free $299.00
    Kogan use the Vodafone network.

    • +3

Same price, same product, different network but Kogan is BOGOF. Plus you can buy Kogan vouchers on ebay. That makes it a lot cheaper.

      • +2

If you can find someone to go halves with, using maths it will be $149.50 each.

        • +5

Have you ever seen them both in the same room at the same time?

        • +1

          @aragornelessar:
If a forum post counts as a room then yes.
If not i haven't seen either of them but one still knows they exist.

        • Does it have a notification LED?

  • waiting for more competition, so real deals coming sooner

  • +1

Woolies use Optus, Kogan use Vodafone, ALDI use Telstra. You can't really compare the 3 as they are totally different products.

    • +8

      Woolies use Telstra

      • +1

        I stand corrected.

    • +7

Yeah but users really gotta test each network in their own area first. Telstra isn't the be all and end all I was once led to believe. In my area for example, Telstra is the absolute slowest and has only 2-ish bars (have tested telstra, boost, belong, aldi, woolworths) and optus (optus/ovo/virgin) and vodafone (kogan only) is surprisingly faster, but voda is best value via kogan.

And yes, i'm using a device that has every single band used in australia as well as Cat11 LTE and 3-band carrier aggregation (Netgear AC810s), and configure the apns correctly each time.

I also want to clarify, I once recommended ALDImobile to my inlaws who live out in the bush and it cant access Telstra Band 28 (700Mhz) so its certainly not an alternative for regionals who want a telstra service on the cheap… have verified as i have to carry my work phone here as it is on full telstra and is the only thing that gets signal.

      • Just to clarify, is B28 only deactivated when using ALDI in affected regional areas? I thought B28 can still be accessed in metropolitan areas but Telstra MVNOs just don't get carrier aggregation? I can't find an authoritative online source (it doesn't help that Telstra uses "4GX" and "700 MHz" interchangeably).

        • ALDI can't connect to the tower my Telstra one can.. and it's def a B28 only tower.. .specifically this tower:
          https://oztowers.com.au/Home/FullSiteInfo?siteId=30731

I suspect when Telstra mentions "4GX", they are actually referring to carrier aggregation with the "X"

        • @RB260483: Thanks for the reply. Sorry I'm a little confused by the intent of your first statement in regards to my question since I assume Flagstone Creek is a regional area?

I checked the Woolworths (https://mobile.woolworths.com.au/coverage.html) and Telstra (https://www.telstra.com.au/regional-services/regional-covera…) coverage maps and like your second sentence suggests, Telstra MVNOs like ALDI and Woolworths do have access to 700 MHz as well. However, the Woolworths site even seems to suggests that 1800 MHz only would be exceedingly rare.

Even more bizarre, Flagstone Creek seems to be an ALDI/Woolworths 700 MHz area (though I don't know where you are in relation to the tower). It would be interesting to see if you can connect to the tower when immediately next to it. The coverage maps often mean nothing for me on Optus though…

One issue I had on my old phone at my house was that it would always try and fail to use 4g with almost no signal even though I could get a few bars on 3g (setting phone to 3g only) and get a consistent but slower connection. Since you're testing the same hardware in the same location on the same parent network with similar coverage maps in the same area it is a little strange.

        • @peterpeterpumpkin: Yep. Flagstone Creek is a regional tower that is B28/700Mhz only.

Literally stood outside it to test both an aldi and pure telstra sim on the exact same phones (iphone 6s plus & htc 10) and the aldi sim wasn't connecting

      • My telstra tower gives me 230mbps, while Optus gives me I kid you not 2mbps… so you can't exactly say Telstra isn't the be all and end all just because you're experience is bad.

        • Hence what I said before that statement so you can't exactly say that either if you have selective reading.

Mobile signal from a tower diminishes the more people there are connected to it, so if all things are equal all your observation tells me is that there are most likely too many people on optus in the area for the allocated signal/bandwidth. This is also why non Telstra approved signal amplifiers (cough AliExpress cough) are banned and fine-able, because once that device locks onto a tower, its like connecting the hose to the tap, the device or hose output would suck out the signal and spread to devices in the new immediate vicinity and diminish the normal coverage, so people who borderline just had connectivity would easily lose it.

          Edit
But yes, in areas just outside of the cbd.. Telstra was the bees knees on a carrier aggregating device and made nbn feel like dialup!

  • I'm on Kogan, I THINK I paid under $20 per month for 6GB

The network is good, most of the time, sometimes it's not. More good than bad, but I must admit, I'd much much prefer 6GB on Telstra network for $25 per month than 6GB on Kogan for (I think) $19

Then again, maybe Telstra isn't mindblowing good anymore?

I do try to keep under $20 though. Honestly I'd be ok with 3.5GB on Telstra for $20 instead, if only.

    • +2

Pretty sure that the aldi/ww telstra mobile network is not the premium telstra product?
      Can someone confirm this?

      • +4

Only Boost gets the full Telstra network. You can tell from the way they talk about the network, Woolworths and Aldi both say they use 'part of the Telstra network'

        • +1

What does that ultimately mean for users? How much worse is it?

        • +1

@hamwhisperer: There's info about this on Whirlpool, but I couldn't immediately find it. Basically it means you are a lower priority, eg. if you are in a congested or remote location and you make a call at the same time as a Telstra customer, their call will go through and yours won't. The same applies to data, Telstra customers will always have a faster and more stable data connection than customers of a reseller. The only time you get great service is when there are no Telstra customers around (ie. never.) IMHO it's really nothing like being on Telstra, YMMV.

        • +1

          @hamwhisperer:
As usual it depends on where you are.. personally I found ww worse than Optus.
With voda resellers kogan/lebara I found their data to be faster and more responsive.. when you can get a good signal.
This is mostly up and down the north coast NSW.

        • @xywolap: Yes, I was told before that north coast of Sydney had some drop out areas for Vodafone, so it pays to find out before.

    • +1

Shared with someone (from OzBargain) in the Kogan Mobile "2 for 1 deal" MEDIUM 6 GB/30 days. So $299 / 2 = $149.50 each / 12 months is about $12.50 a month … bit hard to beat that. But you prefer to pay Telstra $25 a month … double that?

Been with Vodafone for years with absolutely no issues and also used in several states, so porting to Kogan Mobile a no brainer for us. I ported over 2 other Vodafone prepaid accounts (SMALL & LARGE) in January when there were some excellent discounts then too. We find Vodafone 4G is often faster than our standard Belong NBN.

Wouldn't suggest others jump over to Kogan Mobile or Vodafone unless sure of coverage etc. though. Same goes for Telstra.

      • +1

At the prices you're listing, I'd prefer Kogan / Voda.

I just need to find someone to do the 2 for 1 deal around Nov, when mine expires.
Also, my girl is the worry, she needs 15 to 25GB per month, I only need 3.5

I want sub $20, she wants sub $40 (Optus, surprisingly did this, I think $38 per month for 20gb)

        • +1

This current "2 for 1" Kogan Mobile deal has to be purchased before end April (unless sold out) and activated by end of May. "Medium" is the cheapest option for the "2 for 1" deal. Also the "Large" and "Extra Large" 365 days available too I think, with 16 and 23 GB / 30 days. The cut off dates wouldn't suit you unless you want to take out a new mobile number (promos are designed to get people to take put new accounts or port their numbers over from another co). They did a similar sales offer in January so worthwhile keeping them in mind while waiting for your contracts to run out. There is "Small" Kogan Mobile 365 day plan too that may suit you better with only about 3 GB /30 days I think.

Fortunately for me my contract with Vodaf expires late May, so will port my existing number over to Kogan then.

Ps. If just needing data check out the new Vodafone sim offer $7.90 for 18GB. We took one with us on holidays as I still have an old 4G Vodafone modem.

  • +1

Coles mobile deal less data but much cheaper $180 for 42GB
even if you used for 9 months and resigned it works out cheaper

  • Coles is $4.28/GB, Aldi is $3.74/GB.

  • I switched from Aldi to Kogan at the beginning of the month and I'm disappointed that the voice call quality is not as good.

Forums say the Telstra and Vodafone network offer the same voice quality, but in practice, for me, there could be benefits in favouring Aldi/Telstra over Kogan/Vodafone.

    • I think voda network is clearly patchy at best and at worst just poor.

So I play games and kick my wife off our adsl so I get no instragram ping from her, and she complains her 4g on Kogan is slow compared our adsl. Our adsl gets 3mbps, pretty poor from voda. Usually voda 4g gets around 50 mbps at our house, so it’s obviously patchy.

  • Some of the other brands 365 deals include a portion of usage for International calls, handy if you need that feature

    • Which are the other ones? Im looking at a 365 plan with some international calls

      • +1

        Lebara

  • Was with aldi last year, reception was always 5 bars and call quality was excellent. Switched over to kogan 2 months ago and reception is usually 1 or 2 bars wherever I go and as a result call quality is grainy, but I don't mind as I primarily text. You get what you pay for!

    • +1

Actually I found exactly the opposite. My house (and my friend's house) seems to be in a Telstra blackspot, and I live in the CBD. I can't get over how bad their coverage is. It's going to be different for everyone.

  • +3

$249 1 year super pack still available too with 42GB (48GB for those renewing).

    • Thanks I renewed and didn't realise the bonus 6GB

    • +2

      Coles Mobile have 1year 42GB for $180

      • +1

        Optus no fanks

        • +1

Like the Optus Network but they are a pain to deal with… go resellers if you want optus.

  • Without Band28 700mhz, Vodafone may be better (uses 850 and 1800)

    • Aldimobile and WoolworthsMobile have access to B28 700mhz just not at over 100mbps.

      • Could you ELI5?

      • They also might've meant that if you have a non B28 phone, Voda may be better.

        • correct

        • @calvinc: Sorry, thought you were responding to the post saying Aldi doesn't have access to B28.

Haven't figured out the way threading indentation works on OzBargain yet.

  • I just need to use call and text, don’t need data and it should have long expiry date, can you please recommend me a cheapeast deal? Thanks.

    • Aldi 365 days pay as you go.

      • +1

Not cheap unless you don't make many calls…

If you're doing lots of calls, it's expensive. It'd be great to have a decent call/text option plan with no data for those that don't need data.

        • If you're doing lots of calls, it's expensive.

Agree but T-man didn't mention that, so I can only go off what he was asking for.
Usually people who want a long expiry aren't heavy users.

        • Yes, I use lots of text and calls for business and I work from home, so I don't need data as I can use wifi at home.

        • +1

          @T-man:

Maybe try the $10 Amaysim deal as mentioned. Yes you get 1GB but that can be handy for when you don't have wifi, but get unlimited calls and text.

Is Optus network good in your area?

    • +3

      T-man..
Amaysim $10 mth.. Optus network u/l calls & txt incl 1gb data. No lock in contract. Good co to deal with & easy sign up.

      • +1

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll have a look at their plan.

        • Or keep an eye on the Kogan Mobile 365 days SMALL (only 2 GB / 30 days) U/L talk & Text within Aus. In its membership drive in January I paid $152.10 (for Mother) as it was on special then. I think about $179 (normal price) now though.

          Lycamobile?

  • Wish it was online like last time.

  • +3

One thing stop me to join Kogan is.. It does not have international roaming for, as least I can receive SMS when I am traveling overseas. As I tried a few times that the when I access the internet banking, they needed to send me a code to verify and….

    • Good point. And they don't have an option to send international sms or calls.

      • I am also thinking go for the Coles Mobile on Optus network.

        https://www.coles.com.au/our-range/our-products/coles-mobile

Data only get 42GB. However, it is same as ALDI that the data is for the whole years so the unused data won't be wasted. And it has international roaming so I can receive SMS as least.

For only $180, it is attractive also..

    • I believe Kogan Mobile has an add-on for extra for international services. Check out Kogan 365 days "Small" offer. It was on special $152 ladt January, and likely a similar sale will be offered again soon.
