  • OCR! That's gotta seal the deal.

Ocr can be pretty crap by itself, and is far more useful when embedded into a PDF to make it searchable.

Last time I checked, this app does not make searchable pdf files, and if it was an application Australians were buying in the likes of HN, OZB would be in uproar to the ACCC about misleading advertising.

Office lens by Microsoft is a great app that does a fantastic job making searchable PDF files.

      • You'd be a fool to expect OCR to be perfect.

        • I'm not sure anyone expects ocr to get all characters right all the time. But that's very different to suggesting the app makes a PDF with selectable text, just because it says 'ocr'.

        • @bumblebeetuna: I never suggested anything. All I ever did was point out it had OCR.

  • How does this compare to Google Drive's built in scanning function?

I suppose OCR as Clear pointed out..? Haha.

  • whats ocr

Optical Character Recognition. Basically when you scan a document it becomes an image and you can't highlight the text. OCR makes it so you can highlight and change the text. For example I could scan in a handwritten note then copy certain parts of it out into a word doc using OCR.

    • Like Clear said Optical Character Recognition. It's an expensive paid for feature of Adobe Acrobat Pro, which I don't have at home. Now I've got it in this app, so heaps happy. Will be interested in how well it OCR's as even Adobe Acrobat isn't perfect. Am looking forward to trying it, thanks :)

Office Lens is the best scanner for Android, hands down.

Can you share why you think so?

Other ones that I've heard positive things about are CamScanner, Tiny Scanner and Google Drive.

I recall when I briefly used Office Lens, I don't think I figured out a way to have it automatically upload to Google drive for me (wouldn't expect it being a Microsoft product).

The quality of the scanning alignment and OCR is worlds better than any other app I've used (I assume because they throw it to their cognitive AI platform while it's working). As for Google Drive, I save office lens scans to gallery, which I already have synced with google drive (and dropbox).

        • Thanks for the recommendation. I will give Office Lens a try.

Looks pretty good and Microsoft already knows everything about me. Russian devs/hackers hopefully not so much, though they spam the hell out of me.

    • Thanks, will check this out too :)

I tried MDS last time it was free, but the alignment and pdf quality was not that good, so I went back to Camscanner.

  • Got it. Cheers.

  • A big gold star for TA, nice find! Can't wait to try it :)

  • Any love for Apple users?

  • Thanks OP

      Yes, expired!

  • For those that missed, I've been using CamScanner (free) for years and it's great!
    (No OCR though)
