  • Are these shuckable?

    • +1

Yeah quite easily, they're also 15mm thick so check your clearance if you want to put it in a laptop/PS.

      • Oh that's good to know. But I might wait abit and invest in an 8TB Ironwolf drive when it gets cheaper.

  • Has anyone received their $10 from the Audible deal?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/371865

    • Doesn't come out for 2 weeks I believe

    • Don't terms and conditions say 2 weeks?

      • Pity. Think I'll wait 2 weeks, hopefully the drive is the same price.

        • Maybe even better price then, who know?

  • The should be be links for the other items.

    • You can just search for them in Amazon

  • Nice
    Normally $188ish

  • Had yet another Seagate drive die on me. A 2TB expansion portable bought just over a year ago that's been sitting on my Xbox One for about 6-8 months. Games started going missing and needing re-download, unscratched disks copying across only after 3 attempts, downloads getting stuck. Only worked out for sure why the buggy Xbox was playing up when I finally connected the drive to a PC and ran HD Sentinel. Of course however many bad sectors there are aren't enough to qualify it for warranty, but nor is it even reliable enough not to cause problems on an Xbox. Seriously getting sick of dealing with Seagate drives. Other drives die from time to time but Seagate does it so often I now consider their drives a waste of time, effort and money.

    • Expansion are the cheaper ones. I din't think leaving them connected to any device us a great idea.

The backup plus has better reviews.

For the kind of use I give them they are fine. Never had any drives died on me unexpectedly and usually I have them backed up multiple times.

      • +2

The internal drives are exactly the same, the only real difference is the "backup" model includes backup software.

      • Drives inside are identical. Expansion may not have some bells and whistles. On WD drives there's no power saving on the Elements range for example. Definitely no built in encryption on basic Seagate or WD drives (which to me is a good thing).

Also no issues with Western Digital drives connected 24x7. I think I've had 1 or 2 die in 10 years or so. Years ago before all the issues I use to favour Seagate, but after about 8 of them died I'm avoiding them like the plague. I made an exception for this portable drive which was on special. Stupid me.

        • Well I have never had issues with Seagate or WD.

I carry them around to be used as backups on jobs, three at a time. Whenever I have had corruption on one drive I still have two copies and other than a few bad sectors I have never had one die on me unexpectedly.

Well 1 did but I knocked it down hard from a table at a bar while doing the backup. It was spinning at the time and landed on a corner. It did not survive.

        • @munecito:

Do you leave yours connected and your computer on 24x7? I suspect you're not using them enough to notice that one has a higher failure rate.

        • @syousef: I use them for backups but they are power cycled several times a day (connect disconnect). I'm a photographer for trade and carry The drives with me everywhere so there is a lot of start-stop in the way I use drives. They do get thrown around a bit in the bag. I don't baby my gear to be honest.

I still have an old 500gb Seagate connected to the house's main tv acting as PVR. That thing has to be at least 5 years old and has been connected there for at least 4 on those years.

One of Seagate usb desktop drive did get a damaged USB port and ended up is days in a HDD toaster instead.

There are a couple of old WD 500gb my passport ones (the first USB 3 I actually bought) doing the rounds of USB sticks. Those have been in the mail more times that I care to remember.

I have had failures of both brands but like I said not without enough notice so I have not suffer a catastrophic data loss yet. But no brand sticks not Ryan the other. Well maybe except Toshiba, because I have none of those left, but I have not bought as many as I have bought WD or Seagate.

        • @munecito:

The older Seagates were rock solid for many years. I have 6 2TB internal drives from 6.5 years ago still going in my old machine. Then the 3TB models came out they went down hill. I've lost about 8 external drives. I have 3 left and I don't trust them. The only reason I haven't lost data is multiple backups. All the Western Digital drives I've bough bar one are still going strong.

It sounds like you've been very lucky. As I said it doesn't seem to matter what application I put them in I still have problems with the Seagates.

        • @syousef:

I've had a couple of 'portable' externals fail, both WD and seagate, normally it's only the USB board and at least with Seagate you can remove the USB and use a normal SATA interface, you cannot do this with WD drives as they have the USB permanently connected.

        • @CH:

I do know the difference between the board and SMART errors. These drives all developed bad sectors.

    • Hello syousef, sorry to hear you ran into problems with your Seagate drive. You may contact support here.

  • Interesting article about HDD lifespan/reliability. Seagate doesn't look too good:

PS: just had to return the Seagate 5TB Expansion Desktop Hard Drive from the OZB/OW deal (purchased in June 2017).

  • Is the price for $166.16 AUD include the delivery fee?

    • It was at the day's exchange rate. There may be variations due to exchange price fluctuations

      • Amazon changes the way shipping charge is calculated recently. The shipping charge at checkout page is differed from the main listing page, which is higher. If you use deliver to ParcelPoint, you can get a better deal.
