I urge everyone to get the mate 10 pro if you are looking at this phone as an option. I've never ever been happier with a phone.

    • +2

I dont see how it's a better choice. You get oled and waterproof at too great of a sacrifice. You downgrade to 1080 instead of 1440 resolution, lose micro SD, speaker Sq is somewhat degraded, no headphone jack.

I bought the normal version over the pro. Not too keep on ultra wide ratios that add borders to YouTube videos.

I found the camera, namely the focus, to be meh on the phone. When mounted on a gimbal even the lightest footstep you take will have a noticeable shake on the video. Looks kinda like the dramatic shake effects you see in movies when a dinosaur stops on the ground.

      • +4

I prefer 1080 to 1440 - difference on a mobile is negligible imo and battery saved is worthwhile.

      • Yeah the points you made are hardly “too great of a sacrifice”.

1080p v 1440p is basically indistinguishable on a smartphone screen unless you’re using it for VR. I’ve got a Mate 9 (5.9 1080p) and P10 Plus (5.5 1440p) and I’ve never thought the resolution one the P10 was better than the M9.

        • Losing sd card and headphones isn't a big loss?

1080 and 1440 us distinguishable. Text is different, YouTube now has borders on full screen. I don't even play games and I can tell when a screen isn't qhd.

    • Had the mate 8 - man did i dislike their android overlay.

  • +6

This one is Mate 10 not the pro version, which has micro SD card slot, headphone jack, higher resolution…

    https://www.techradar.com/news/huawei-mate-10-vs-huawei-mate…

    • sounds like the Mate 10 is better than the pro.. subjective I suppose

      • I bought mate 10 simply because PRO wasn't in any normal colour. It's just perfect.

  • +1

G6 sub $600 already …..love the way LG push down their flagship prices and you don’t need to wait till next model.

my V20 is due to get oreo so little incentive to upgrade.

    • It's been due for over 6 months…. I am waiting too

    • +7

I bought my G6 for $520 6 months ago why are they more expensive now?

      • Agree. Missus has the g6 and paid this price too over 6 months ago. Still a great phone for money but they were discounted heavily immediately…i would expect to pay $400 by now in true OB style🤔

      • +2

Link to the deal? $548 is the cheapest au stock H870DS to date on ozbargain that i can remember, if you have the 32gb version or greystock, $520 sounds about right.

    • +3

Already? It’s over a year old.

      • This! Its been at this price for ages. Not a deal unless it drops below $400 IMHO.

  • How much did they jack off the price for pump20. Just found Motog5s price$407.00

Any Samsung S7 or later dual sim phones - AU stock?

    • +2

Yeah, wonder if Lyl can ask them to do any deals on the S8+ dual sim.
BTW all dual-sim are imports. Dual sim not released in Australian models.

      • thats incorrect. We sell zte axon 7 and axon 7 mini among other huawei and moto models are that are AU dual sim versions

        • I should have clarified all the Galaxy 7 and 8 dual. Not talking about other phone brands.

  • I'm actually thinking of getting a G6! G7 will be releasing early next month, but at 548aud (for the H870DS) I guess this is a pretty good deal. what do you guys think?

    • Been using it a few months now nothing to complain about especially for the price I consider it a solid deal. Just don't go expecting updates still no Oreo (fingers crossed I expect it for sure just who knows when) it's performance and camera are good for the price but don't compete with flagships but is half the price so just don't look at it as a flagship and great deal. I love Wide angle camera though and it's the only option for that (except a Moto but don't recall which and not as quality)

      • +1

thanks for the reply. And i would like the hi-fi recording feature as well using 2 mics. Only thing that's holding me back is now that LG has confirmed the release date of G7 (2nd May) I guess G6 would drop by at least 100auds by mid next month. i dont know…

    • +1

It's been this price for ages if you'd got it on a deal, but yes it's still a great price for what you get.

It's an excellent phone, and the build quality, sound quality (Quad DAC), and beautiful (yet non-oled) display are highlights. It hits an excellent balance between performance (cpu/ram) and price.

I've had most LGs over the years (4XHD, G Pro, G2, G3, V10, G6) and I think it's their most polished build yet.

    • +1

I had mine for a months, agree with the comment above, good phone for the price but not flagship. A few things to point out.
      -No notification led
      -No wireless charging (only US)
-The default launcher (app drawer) is an exact copy of the G4.
-You would never be able to make a full use of the 5.7" screen since the home buttons can't be hidden, they do disappear when you watch full screen videos, but no video has a 18:9 ratio.

  • I have the P10 and the wife has the P9, both have been great phones only being let down in two areas.

Both our phones are aussie stock and we have received bugger all in the form of security updates from Huawei and secondly, the camera is beautiful in well lit environments, but as soon as you hit low light conditions the quality turns to potato.

Can anyone comment on if the Mate 10 has addressed these issues?

    Cheers.

    • I can't speak to the camera, but I've had 3 updates since getting the Mate 10 in January. Having said that, it's still on the 1st of January security update, so not great…

      • Thanks a bunch for that info mate.

    • -1

Which two areas have been the let down???

      • +3

        Updates, low-light camera performance.

        • try p20 or p20 pro.
I think p20 pro has the best camera and low light camera performance at the moment.

Huawei never really has a good track record with providing timely OS updates, if at all.

This is common with the few large Chinese phone makers (eg Oppo, ZTE, Vivo), as they are more reliant on selling volumes and bundle the OS updates with actual phone releases.

      • Cheers zrmx, shame to hear the lack of ongoing support is a common theme as I really rate the Huawei's

        • +1

Yea, well they may provide OS generation support to the next one, but only if it is the actual flagship handsets (i.e. the P, P pro, Mate, and Mate Pro handsets, but not the mini nor lite suffixed ones). And the one OS gen support is seriously lackluster compare to their competitors.

Although considering their main market base, ie China, there isn't much punishment or backlash, as it is more actual phone feature driven (eg camera) rather than OS related feature driven (and the original OS features may not all work anyway, lol, considering in China eg app store etc is totally different).

Overall yea quite a shame, I only recommend them if the user is more phone feature focused rather than needing up to date OS, and if one is okay with the UI (although can be remedied with a Launcher to an extent). Personally I can't get myself over them unless super super dreaming-level of discount (haha need the inner bargainer to convince me), but also because I'm a Windows Mobile user lol.

      • Actually the lack of updates isn't too do with Huawei. It's Australian telcos which aren't making them either a priority or pushing them out. I had an Aussie p9 and my wife an Asian p9. Hers was updated all the time. Mine didn't get anything. I've now got a mate 9 and there is an update waiting that I can't get because optus won't approve it.

If updates are important to you check out a tool called Funky Huawei. You can rebrand your phone to a different region and get updates galore. It costs about $40 to do last I checked.

    • +1

I had to using FirmwareFinder (google it) to encourage my Mate 9 and P10 Plus to update, but they’re not both running Oreo was pretty much the latest security patch.

P10 Plus just got another update on its own a few days ago (not FF trickery).

      • Thanks for that bit of info Mitch, just downloaded that app and set the proxy feature and low and behold, new android and emui software available! So even though its a manual work around, very happy to have found a way to at least get the updates to our phones :)

      • 8.0 Update for Mate 9 appears to be available for my C636 through firmwarefinder. The fullOTA-MF-PV versions (B362 or older) seems to be the 7.0->8.0 upgrade version.

    • dont you just put it in pro mode and sort out the aperture and shutter time? most smart phones suck in low light dont they? least with P9/p10 you can actually fiddle :)

  • Arent you the guys who are selling the Samsung s9 above RRp?

  • +1

Just wait till May, G6 will drop by $100.

  • Thinking of buying second hand S7 for around $300, what do you guys think compare to Oppo?

    • +1

Been having s7 for a year - great phone, great camera, but Android lags occasionally. For $300 you won't find anything with a comparable camera.

  • +3

Just bought mate 10 on last eBay sale. Really happy with it very snappy, great photos and very good speakers. Highly recommended.

    • How's display uniformity? Mine has a faint yellow tint on the bottom. Wondering if it's normal and I'm just being too picky with my professionally trained eyes hah.

      • +1

Display is perfect on mine, pictures are sharp and uniform. One of the best features I like is the option to change the screen resolution from Hd to 2k

        • Thanks. Looks like it's going back. Trying to convince myself it's not there isn't working.

  • +3

LG G6 for $550 isnt such a deal anymore. I'll wait a few weeks for it to drop when the G7 gets released.

    • +1

hopefully G6 will drop at least 100 once G7 is released

  • does anyone know if lg has wireless charging

    • Hi Manojkbanga,

The Australian model of the LG G6 does not have wireless charging unfortunately.
