  • This is all good until Apple bricks you for getting it repaired third party..

    • How do they do that?

        Regular software updates.
iPhone 6 - error 53 or something like that
iPhone 7 - can't remember but there was an issue here
        iPhone 8 - iOS 11.3 bricking

There's many articles out there just search Apple bricking repaired iPhones.
Apple's advice? Get your phone repaired by us - they don't onsell any parts so if it's not through them its third party.

That sucks you'd think they make enough money without having to do that to people's phones.

@ausbob71: just another reason I wouldn't pick an iphone. I have no idea why they are so popular, or how they can get away with things like this but awareness is crucial.

It’s a bit disingenuous to claim that these issues were due to decisions made with malicious intent.

For the iPhone 6 error, this was for the fingerprint reader to prevent people from hacking into phones through replacing the original authenticated fingerprint reader with another one. They changed the way authentication works so that people could get their fingerprint readers replaced by third parties. Same with iPhone 7.

For iPhone 8, this is a new error and it was clear that it was the third party party screens not compliant with the software. Otherwise they would have done this with version 1 of the software. This should be rectified soon.

Clearly Apple has a blind spot here and they can do more to authorise third-party repairs - offer training and parts to sell especially for rural and out of the way areas that don’t have an Apple store, but to insinuate that they are doing this maliciously is I think disingenuous. Apple themselves offer very competitive rates for repairs with very good customer service - just take it to the Apple store and they fix it or give you a new/refurbished phone. Phones are so complex and filled up with tech that it seems that access to third-party repair manuals and parts wouldn’t benefit many people anyway.

@victinini: are you putting all of Apple's iPhone issues down to just chance or a bug not ironed out?
For me there's one too many - they often get rectified but that's not much consolation if new issues are on the horizon all the time.

Also if third parties were allowed original parts none of this would happen - but would Apple do that? Nah it's more money for them.
They aren't exactly doing it with malicious intent but it's a very clever cycle they've got into - repair your phone via a third party at your own risk.

@pennypincher98: I agree, Apple can be stingy and outright smug and overbearing at times - they don’t care about what other people do, and they don’t care about anything that doesn’t impact directly on the experience that they control - thus the software issues. They do offer repairs - it’s most often cheaper than getting a new phone, and I think that they think this is good enough to say “just come to us” without thinking about cost or the fact that some people don’t find it convenient to get to an Apple store. I do suspect that a large part of the issue is that all the technology inside the newer phones are just so dense (and not off-the-shelf) that you simply can’t repair the devices with simple tools like you could with the older models.

I do worry about the environmental impact of people just chucking their phones out because they can’t or don’t want to pay for a simple repair. To me, that takes away from the message that Apple is trying to send about sustainability and environmental friendliness. These types of conversations may help Apple make more consumer/environmentally friendly decisions in the future, so having options is definitely a good thing. I can definitely see some kind of middle point here where Apple can loosen up on simple repairs - screen and battery etc. but keep the more complicated repairs strictly in-house.

Looks like the same tools that came with the replacement battery I bought from eBay which is a pos and lucky to get me half a day of light usage. The tools were ok although the plastic pry tools break if you apply any kind of force.

    • Yep, tried out one of these sets and the pry tools broke apart in like 10 mins. Got blue dust everywhere too.

      • Yeah. The only good thing in this set is the suction cup and METAL drivers.
You can avoid scratching the case / glass / screen with the metal drivers if you're careful enough, which is what the plastic ones are supposed to do, but they break off anyway.

I'd rather pay a bit more and get one of these to be honest: https://sydneytools.com.au/xtorque-x20oz-20oz-solid-claw-ham…
