Which Wristwatch Is Bargainer's Favourite?

Which wristwatch (brand or specific model) is your favourite?

Hopefully you can tell me 'why' as well - price, features, brand, etc.

  • casio calculator watch

  • Grand Seiko with a spring drive, can't really get much better from a movement perspective, the design is timeless and the price isn't ridiculous like swiss made designer stuff.

  • Stock S001B http://stockwatches.com.au/

Bought it because I like the simplicity of it, not overly expensive either. If I had the money though I'd get a Nomos Lambda. :P

  • M tempting to buy Fossil chronograph FS4735 …
If someone finds it best price please let me know as it’s on $130 from eBay overseas seller

  • A lange and sohne 1815 chronograph is my totally out of reach grail. Otherwise I love the Nomos 38mm Orion with gold indices and blue hands.

  • I have 3 that I usually rotate between (depending on what I'm wearing).

Seiko Neo Classic Chronograph SPC083 (Black Faced)
    Orient Symphony II (White Faced)
    Casio DW5600E-1V (Digital)

For the Seiko and Orient watches, I'm not a huge fan of the stainless steel bands, so I've replaced them with black Hirsch leather strap and a golden brown leather Hirsch strap respectively. Out of the 3, the Casio has been used the most.

I also have a Timex Weekender Fairfield which I hardly use as the ticking is really LOUD, and a Pebble Time Steel which I haven't bothered to charge the battery.

  • I rotate between a Seiko Pepsi Turtle reissue
    https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SRP779-Prospex-Automatic-Rubber…
    And a Longines Legend Diver.
    https://www.longines.com.au/watches/heritage-collection/l3-6…

I wanted a Seiko Turtle when they first came out, buy parents bought me something else. When they reissued I was definitely getting one. Completely fine with daily abuse.
Again, the Longines is a reissued groundbreaking watch. Looks great with a suit, tough as nails and a proper dive watch.
Have some others I wear from time to time, but one of the above is generally on my wrist.

  • I blame watchnerd and pjc. I didn't have any watches, now I have 3. I do appreciate a watch, especially when travelling or doing stuff around town, appointments etc.

Another useful feature, for those who don't use gps, or use it as a backup. If you're bushwalking and have a rough idea of how much ground you cover, you can time how long it should take to get to next track junction. This is if you're on vehicular tracks. Most maps don't show all the tracks. If you know there is a track heading east after 1.5 km, then you should start looking for it around 15mins. If you come to one after 5 mins, it isn't what you want.

Also, now, I'm trying to rehabilitate a badly broken ankle. So I try to walk for up to one hour at least. Go for half hour then head home. If I'm at home I have a steep hilly circuit. It used to take me an hour bang on; now I'm down to 50 or 45min (once).

The watches: In reality, this is the most useful. It's very light, tough, cheap, the glass is recessed so doesn't get scratched or damaged. There's a light to see time at night. Alarm, timer, countdown timer, 24hr time, date is always good. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Casio-G-Shock-Classic-Series-Wat…

This one is my most recent, and really least functional, but I really like it. It's heavy. It is a real diving watch. It is easy to see the time from miles away. The date is too small for my imperfect eyes. The bezel works; I wouldn't get one with those shitty fake bezels that don't work (these are a foolproof timer). https://www.amazon.com/Wenger-01-0641-111-Force-Stainless-Si…

The last one, is kind of in between the two above, but I'm not home and can't tell you what it is. It kind of looks like a military one; a citizen quartz. 100m water proof. Fairly light. I really like it too.

  • Really happy with this one for over a year now, can’t go wrong with eco-drives

Also, can be had in all black with orange hands.

  • +1

There are many great afordable automatic / mechanical watches under $500AUD.

    Diver: Seiko SKX007 or SKX009.
Field watch: Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical
Pilots watch: Tisell Flieger Type A or Type B
    Dress Watch: Tissot Visodate
Digital: Any G-Shock, but the DW5600 is cool

  • Sanda 329 (very much Skmei 1134 inspired by Casio GW-S5600). A great no fuss lightweight digital watch. Watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgVrEn_GPH0. Bought for ~$7.

  • I will keep wearing my Pebble Time until it gives up the ghost! Does everything I need-tracks me steps, gives me notifications/day/date and even tells me the time!

  • I don't know if this would count as a "wristwatch", but a smartwatch like a Ticwatch E is quite nice.
Comes in at around $200 AUD, but I bought mine for $160 during a 20% sale.
It basically does everything that your smartphone would; but, much more conveniently.

    • I have the S, in the process of returning it for warranty as the crown button gave up the ghost.

      • Oh damn, that would be inconvenient. My watch seems to be jusy fine.

        • Yeah inconvenience is probably the word for it.
Had to lodge a claim, then defend the fact I hadn't knocked or bumped the button, then was given a delivery note to print and stick to the box and mail it off.
Now waiting for them to receive it, inspect it, then hopefully send me a new one.

Also uploading a screenshot of my reciept was an issue because they didn't allow pdf and only allowed 1 picture to be attached, yet the Kickstarter pdf was over a few pictures

  • +1

Stowa Antea going strong for over 10 years.

  • Cannot remember the brand name of the watch but it is the brand that Homer Simpson wears:

    https://goo.gl/WkPqrr

    Pros:
    Very quiet.
    Customisable.
    Requires no batteries.
Accurate to at least two times of the day.

  • Favourite is my old Seiko A829 bought in Feb '83.

Bit worse for wear, backlight doesn't work, mode ring is a little hard to turn and the plungers under it tend to stick, otherwise still works.

    Current is an AmazFit BIP.

  • Definitely not my favourite watch but for a bargain watch you cant beat some of the Seiko Automatics. I'll qualify that by saying that I generally only like Automatic watches and I like diver/tool style watches. With that in mind the SX007 or the 'Monster' Seiko autos are unbeatable for value, reliability and looks. if you are up for it there is a large SX007 'modding' scene and you can buy mod kits to change the face, hands etc and dress your Seiko up to look different.

  • +1 for Orient. Have a FD0F with leather strap and love it to bits. Want to get a Sun/Moon eventually though…

Cir $12k if anyone can find one. A unique watch.

    https://watchdirect.com.au/casio-digital-Mens-watch.html

Cir $75, one bang for your buck, and a timeless classic.

    • Remember reading a couple of years ago that the Casio you've listed was a favourite for Terrorist bombmakers because it was easy to get hold of and easy to use, so much so that wearing that watch was a red flag to airport security guys etc.

  • I just watched this YouTube video on the Seiko bottle Cap watches.. I'm tempted..
    Anyone seen these before ?
    https://youtu.be/eu_pC_XmB3Y

Google Seiko SRPC63 if you can't be bothered watching the video.

    Roughly $300 delivered
