For 50 litres. 4 cents is 2 dollars and 10 cent is 10 dollars

        This is unusual maths.

        • Sorry I should be a bit more clearer. This is for the price difference if you went to a petrol station with 4 cent or 10 cents difference.

        • @pandadude:
          That is not any clearer.

          $0.04 x 50 = $2
          $0.10 x 50 = $5

          No?

        • @pandadude:

Sorry I should be a bit more clearer.

No, you need to be more accurate.

    • Not quite, rego and to some extent insurance ( if they are charging based on slabs) are fixed, so more k's would reduce your per k cost…only overhead exp varies

    • -1

Hahaha so my junker must have cost me $135000 to run so far right? Hahahaha…

      • +1

Ok. Can you tell me how much per km your junker has cost you then? You might get a bit of a shock when you add it all up. I was surprised how much per week my $1500 car cost to keep for an average year, and I was only using 1 tank per month.

If you average your costs over normal km usage per year it might make you think about how much it costs to drive down the road instead of walking.

BP is the most convenient station near to me and I have a velocity card. Honestly I don't care about some minor price difference, it will likely end up being a $1 difference out of $50 of fuel, which isn't worth the hassle. The only station I know is consistently and significantly cheaper is a 15 minute drive away.

    • Can you fill up on the way home or while you are out?

      • That's what I do…

  • +2

    BP 98
Both of my cars have been tuned using it, so I've just stuck with it.

    • How is BP 98? My car needs 98 octane fuel, gets cranky even with 95, so stuck with it. I used to use Shell 98 but that's not available here so went to Caltex. There are a couple of BPs around so I've been wondering if it would be any better.

      • My car which i recently sold was tuned with BP 98 in the tank too, when i fill up with caltex 98 it had a miss. Must be something in the additive.

        • Mine isn't tuned in any way, just the way it is I suppose. Coles/Shell was ok, woollies vortex currently but maybe bp could be better (but more inconvenient)

        • My car was originally tuned to Caltex 98. Car kept pulling timing on the dyno because we were tripping the knock sensor.

Swapped it to Shell 98, finished 10kW above what we got on Caltex and no issues with knock.

Now it only gets Shell or BP 98 regardless of cost.

      • BP 98 for me has been faultless.

For one tank, I had no choice but to fill up with caltex 95.
Cold starts were horrible, wanted to stall, running rough etc. Once warmed up it was okay driven easy but once the foot went down you could feel it hesitating.

        • Same exact thing with mine.

    • +2

      BP98 only here too.
The car was tuned on BP98 and nothing else goes in the tank.
Was told when I booked in for the tune to have a full tank of BP98 in it which was the only fuel I was using beforehand anyway as it was common knowledge that BP98 was the best fuel for a WRX.
Don't really care what it cost, but generally its one of the cheaper fuels in my area anyway, Coles is the most expensive by 6-10 cents a litre most days, never been the cheapest even with the 4 cent discount.

  • +11

This is OzBargain, if you aren't going to 7-Eleven then what are you doing with yourself?

    • +8

Sitting at home relaxing i am not going to travel 600kms to the nearest "7-Eleven" when i can buy my fuel cheaper at my local "X Convenience"

    • Pretty dumb comment tbh. Cheapest in my area is Woolworths/Caltex and it gets even better with 4 cents off + 5% off gift cards. There are 3 7-Eleven's nearby and they're more expensive.

      • +1

No, not a dumb comment at all. You are just out of the loop and clearly not using their app. I can perfectly understand if people do not have 7-Eleven nearby, but in NSW they seem to be the most common service station around (I assumed that would be the case in most metropolitan areas around Australia). Even taking into account Woolworths card and Flybuys 10c off I have found 7-Eleven to be by far the cheapest and already this year I have saved probably $200+.

        • +1

SA doesn't have 7-Eleven due to a deal struck between them and OTR.(On The Run)basically to not operate in each others territory.

  • -1

Whichever is cheapest after taking into account 4 cent discounts and 5% off.

So sometimes….Woolworths, sometimes Coles Express, maybe 7-11. Also been to BP on occasion. Been to Caltex once over the last year.

  • Costco.

  • 7/11 Price Lock Master Race yo

  • +1

    Really depends.

Caltex when there's $20 Star Card for $15.

BP when there's Spend $20 Get $10 Back or Spend $40 Get $10 Back.

    7-Eleven when there's Spend $15 Get $5 Back.

If there are no offers, then I check the cheapest 7-Eleven nationwide price. If it's cheaper than any local petrol stations, then I lock in that price; otherwise fill up at the cheapest local petrol station.

    • +2

So basically "Whatever is cheapest" option then haha.

      • Yep, haha.

    • Now where do you find out about and get these discounts?

  • +4

Wolworths/caltex… They got me with the egiftcards and 4c vouchers.

After applying those, they usually are the cheapest so long as you catch the bottom of the price cycle

  • -1

    7/11 + Jerry cans

  • Puma.

    • Us too - using the 4c off a litre with RAC membership in WA.

  • +1

7/11 was my main place until the music stopped for me. Boo updates.

    Now whatever is cheapest

    • Fake GPS still works. Just try a different phone

  • +2

BP for the Velocity points and the 3 points per dollar on my Amex without the Amex surcharge

    • 3 pts per dollar is better than 8c with $5 milk purchase + 5% on WISH eGift card ??

      • Well I’d have to make an effort to buy the WISH eGift card plus buy milk when I don’t use milk … Or shop $30 worth at Woolies in order to get the petrol voucher

        • -2

Lol if you have to make an effort to buy WISH eGift card, then please hand in your ozbargainer badge. Don't tell me you pay in cash or CC to buy things from JB, Rebel, etc.

        • @regenade: I don’t shop at Woolies enough to justify buying a Wish eGift Card. Or JB Hi-Fi or Rebel for that matter.

  • -1

    My bladder

  • Puma

  • +7

I fly around the country seeking out the best 7-eleven prices. When I find a good price, I buy a plane ticket so I can lock in a voucher.

  • I have only used BP since the first LS1 i had modified/tuned and the tuner mentioned that he tuned cars all day every day and found the most consistent fuel came from BP 98. as he wasn't selling fuel and as i still drive LS modified cars i stick with BP98.
also worth noting that although BP is the only refinery in Perth, they use different additives for different versions of 98 for different fuel companies. (i was told this by a caltex exec i used to live next door to)

  • +3

Wherever it's the cheapest, which rules out Coles Express which around here is often 5c or more more expensive than everywhere else.

Even with the 4c a litre off they are still more expensive than everywhere else.

  • BP diesel and nothing but BP diesel and have done since purchased new in 2007 (Pajero) and still as new at 317,000ks.

Cheap diesel? No thanks. To much can go wrong. An acquaintance in NZ recently picked up a bad dose of cheap diesel in his Pajero. The fuel was sent to a lab. Contained water, algae and other contaminants. Total cost to repair…around $14,000. Now the legal fight begins.

BTW. That was the second one this month as there was one in OZ that I know of.

    • Second that… If I am stuck I will use Vortex Diesel as an alternative.

BP Ultimate Diesel all the way.

    • +4

I doubt it was 'cheap diesel'. If there is water in the fuel you will see a ring of broken down cars around the petrol station. There is no fight, the petrol company pays.

Sometimes there are minor faults that kill high performance motors. An unmodified Pajero Diesel should not be affected by those. If your 'acquaintance's Pajero is modified (extended fuel tank, etc.,) I would chase the aftermarket company first.

    • +2

Absolutely agree. BP Ultimate Diesel is second to none. Diesel quality can vary greatly.

BP also don’t charge extra for Ultimate, whereas Shell (at some stations) have regular and premium diesel with a huge price differential. The consumer will lose going down this path so I don’t support them.

  • Woolworths most of the time as I use the 4c off voucher quite a bit and it’s close to home but only has 91 RON e10. Much prefer to use 94+ RON e10, which is usually available at most other stations other than Shell/BP/Caltex but only makes a negligible difference.

  • Woolies or 7-Eleven usually. Got both next door to my work so depends on price between them. Usually its the same and I go Woolies and get 4c off

  • LOL results not surprising for Oz Bargain Hunters

  • I stick with 95 or 98, BP is preferred but caltex is what I use most due to availability.
Too many issues when buying cheap fuel, all the cheap-asses will regret buying the cheapest stuff.
Save now, pay later in maintenance costs.

    • What happened?

  • +2

As a true Ozbargainer I’m now fueling from Solar PV into my EV. In winter I may have to charge from single phase outlet if heavy useage/mileage and bad weather are coincident. But My 135km rage costs me $4.35 to charge from the grid.
No oil/filter changes or tune ups. No cooling system, and the only plugs I use are the ones to connect me to the power system.

Brushes every 100,000km I’m told and keep tyres and brakes in good order is about all I have to do.

I would encourage anyone to do the same. I’ve never looked back since I got my EV.

    • Which EV did you buy, make/model??

      • +1

        This ^ do tell.

  • I will fill up at a woolies located near a 7/11.

This is because 7/11 generally leads down, so a woolies located near it will match it.. then I use my 4c voucher.

Unless ofcourse the market has cycled, then I will choose an independant, as they do not generally cycle up as high.

  • Caltex. Because Starcard.

  • +1

I use woolies, with rewards card discounts, get 3x2 l milks' to get extra discount. Use discounted egift cards.

  • -3

    @ This Guy.

People that comment when they don't have the full facts usually make an arse of themselves.

People that also say water, algae and other contaminates don't affect a common rail diesel also make an arse of themselves.

    Congratulations.

  • Should be an option for whatever is closest.

  • +2

For those in NSW, the Fuel Check app provides real-time and historical fuel pricing.

This ensures that you always go to the station with the best price, and you can fill up when price is trending the cheapest.

    iOS:

  • I use the Petrolspy app. Highly recommend everyone download this and use it.

It is updated by fellow motorists in real time.

Luckily for me, my local Woolworths, using a 4c off docket, almost always happens to be the cheapest around me.

  • +1

I’ve noticed 7/11 is generally cheaper than other companies. Even with the 4 cent discount I’ve found Caltex and Shell to be a lot more expensive. BP is the same quite a difference compared to Metro or 7/11. Seen Differences of up to 20 cents

    • This + Good Coffee.

  • Shell because I have access to a shellcard for general use

  • +1

Interesting Choice article on contaminated fuels eg. water, dust, rust, iron filings, sludge. States worst culprits being Coles/Shell, Woolworths/Caltex. United, Metro, Caltex and BP mentioned too -

    https://www.choice.com.au/transport/cars/maintenance/article…

    • +1

Yep best thing to do is become friends with a Truckie.. they know which service stations are rubbish for fuel. For instance they won't use the BP near Dreamworld because there is water that seeps into the tank there when it rains.

    • The article also goes on to say,

      Beware the smaller service stations

Less frequented petrol stations operated by smaller brands are more likely to sell contaminated fuel, says Rogers, as they wouldn't top up storage tanks as often.

    • Big brand petrol stations near major thoroughfares are always your best bet. I’ve asked several truckies who are about to empty their tankers into the local petrol station about this and they said it’s the big ones you don’t need to worry about as they get several deliveries a day. It’s generally the small service stations that don’t get much business who are the culprits for bad fuel.

  • 7-11 and fake gps. I pay on average 121c for 91 or 119 for E10 if I'm being tight. Car also gets a treat when 95 or 98 gets priced under 130c

I just like the convenience of having fuel locked at the lowest price so I don't have to wait around for the price cycle to go at its lowest. So satisfying filling up when the prices are at peak and the app shows you saved $20

    • Do you have a link with more info on how to do this? Seems I would maybe have to dust off an old android phone to jailbreak it or something, running a note 8 now.

  • Edit: double

  • I love a bargain as much as the next guy, but say even if you got a whopping 20c difference in price, would you drive half way across the city to get it? I mean you'd only save $10 on a 50L fill. Plus all that time and fuel/wear on your car.

    • Get the 7-11 app lol. Lock in the cheapest price in aus and take it to the servo down the road from home which is charging the highest price known to man.

  • +1

I personally tested petrol on the same vehicle with similar route for three weeks. Each week on different brand on 95 RON

Quality and more fuel efficient wise. I get more mileage and drives better.

BP > Coles Shell > Woolies Caltex

Can speak for 95 unsure about 91

  • I used to mainly use Shell coles express but not any more. They are always thr first ones to increase their prices by 20-25c during the price cycle. They can get stuffed

  • The closest one to me, I dont care about a couple dollars difference.

  • No love for APCO?

    • I fill at APCO 90% of the time. Consistently cheapest diesel in my area and no sign of any problems after 12+ years of buying diesel there. Normally only go elsewhere due to bad planning and running low, then it's usually the Caltex that is conveniently on the way home.

  • 7-11 most days. 98 Octane. The two closet to my house are both 7-11's and they're the always cheapest in my area according to RACQ Fuel Watch. Though I would opt for BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power if I had the choice/convenience. Always filled with 98 octane - more performance, fuel efficient and better for the engine. 95 makes my cars sluggish and fuel economy also suffers. Though I have noticed BP Ultimate and Shell V-Power feel marginally superior driving wise versus 7-11 and other el cheapo 98's. Maybe its in my head?

  • Shell because of FlyBuys points.

  • Great poll. I changed from Coles-shell to 7-11 Mobil 3 months ago. I used 98 and is going well in terms of good mileage and price.

  • Its like 65 to fill my tank every 2-3 weeks. Im not real bothered

  • Costco most of the time else whatever convenience. No prefer brand. Except if I on hire car for work usually do BP to get velocity points

  • BP = velocity points!

  • Costco as it is the cheapest anytime of the week and i drive past everyday

  • +1

    United because E85 life…

  • +1

Don't fuel up with United. The one near me has caused problems, caused engine light to turn on and as soon as i stopped it went away. People i know have had engine problems fueling up from them. They're cheaper but seems like they're diluting their fuel or something.

  • I just go to Woolworths Caltex and fill up 98, no matter the price. Yes I do scan my card to get that 4c off.

  • Link to 7/11 fuel lock: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/288802
    Website: http://projectzerothree.byethost7.com/prices.php

Just fake your location and lock in the price

  • BP ultimate for my wrx sti. I never check the pricing of fuel. It's the one thing I turn a blind eye to.

  • I generally buy from Shell (enjoy there cheap coffee) but generally buy based on what I perceive as having the cleanest/newest tanks.

  • I only use BP because i get free Velocity points.
