  • I was in much of North India in January with a young female companion. This is very overkill to get bodyguards.

India. I'll Never Do It Again

    • After getting a bout of Delhi belly, most people say the same.

  • Our own shame, but it's okay as we live in the best country on Earth…

sexual harassment is different from sexual assault. The numbers in this article https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/2016-saw-106-rapes… shows horrific sexual harassment and assault. 2.6 million cases in one year. Say Australia has a population of 24 million. Half being female. That's 20% every year.

      • So what do you think happened to the Chinese girl? Assault or harassment? And what are you afraid of will happen to your wife?

I'm afraid of both. We live in a safer country than India whos record in sexual assault is just astounding. Considering she has been sexually harassed a few months ago, I am worried especially because she is super friendly which often is interpreted the wrong way.

she has been sexually harassed a few months ago

Where did this happen? In Australia or overseas?

      • Mate, I am not sure how you extrapolated 106 / day to 2.6 million . My calculation leads to 38690. May be you need an accountant from India to work out the maths. For a population of 1.25 billion it works out 0.003%. I understand for those 38690 women these figures are meaningless and their pain cannot be calculated in no. and percentages. But we need to keep things in to perspective when we are comparing two things. I am pretty sure in Australia it is similar no. of percentage. However considering Australia has the population equivalent of a metro in India, from a sheer total no's perspective it will be significantly lower.

    Hi Mate,

I am from Bangalore. I would like to add a bit more perspective to this discussion. Bangalore is a very cosmopolitan city compared to any other city in India. It has a very high expat population, every company worth a cent has a presence in Bangalore. From google, facebook, amazon, mercedes you name it, have significant setup in Bangalore. Being multinational companies there are a whole of expats who travel back and forth. If security was such a massive issue, none of them would have setup shop there. There are probably multitude more expats at any point time in Bangalore than in Sydney.

Yes, there is no denying that these is a rape problem and it was always existing. However India has a new found activism and strength among victims to stand up to perpetrators. Media is also extremely active, where news never used to get reported, now its headlines everyday. Which is a good thing, the more victims standup to people who do these henious crimes, the more that get punished and hopefully lesser the incidence. However most of the recent incidents reported have generally been from North India and significantly less in southern India. Reasons for these are varied and probably not appropriate for your question.

If your wife is going to Bangalore on a holiday, is she going to just stay in Bangalore or go around. If you provide more information on the itinerary I can provide detailed input. Most holiday spots around Bangalore are relatively well exposed to Western people and none are surprised seeing a western person.

I would say hiring a body guard is a extreme measure especially for a city like Bangalore. However its not all rosy, just like any other cities there is an underbelly which you would better avoid. As many have suggested is best to hire a vehicle from a reputable source and the driver will know what areas to go and what to avoid. Being with a local person is a great deterrent as well if your wife has to venture out of Bangalore.

If in Bangalore, use Ola or Uber to travel around and not auto rickshaws. The cabs are cheap and are available in significant numbers. If you don't have a dedicated vehicle then don't travel after 12 in the night. Dress modestly is the best advise I can give you, however no need to got extreme lengths.

PM, me if you need further information on Bangalore and surrounding areas. You wife will be fine. Some times the perspective is missing. When there were a few attacks on students here, I used get messages from all the concerned relatives in India, asking whether we were ok and how is the situation. In their eyes every Indian was under attack. I had to educate them how fantastic a place Australia was and how over hyped were the attacks and it was nothing like it was portrayed. Being from Bangalore, I can honestly till you, it isnt like any extreme negative things that have been said here. It is very far from it. To enjoy India you need to travel with your heart, not with your mind. Its not a country suited to normal logic. Just ask your wife to take some simple precautions and she will be fine.

  • honestly you don't need a personal bodygaurd there.. where is she planning to stay?? ask the hotel to provide a car plus driver. as long as it is their driver should be safe… use Uber or ola cabs as it is safe..no need to venture out at night with unknown people.. avoid dodgy places and dark places.. if she is living in five star accommodation then should not have issues

They provide personal guards at a good value. I have had a good experience as I used them for events there in Bangalore before.
