Fake micro SD cards from PC Byte eBay

I got a Samsung 64GB Evo Micro SD from PC Byte from this "deal".

The cards are counterfeit, tested with H2testw and read/write speed is only 18MB/s, the cards should be 100MB/s read and 60MB/s write.

Have you eliminated the card reader as a possible bottleneck?

    • I tested on two different card readers. Identical results on both.

      • What results do you get from a known genuine card in the same reader and same computer?

        • I can get 30.MB/s read/write through same adapter. It is not bottleneck there.

  • They're not fake, it said test finished without errors. Probably the adapter or reader or computer.

    • Thats not what it means.

It reports speed far below what the cards should be capable of.

      • Yes it is. Fake cards have less capacity than genuine cards and it will say that it can't write to the whole card.

        • You are wrong. It is 1GB read/write test not capacity test.

        • @wanderlei: why not test it properly then?

        • Fake cards don't necessarily have less capacity. Heaps of inferior cards have the claimed capacity but have poor performance.

      • tested with H2testw and read/write speed is only 18MB/s,

The speed you have these isn’t tested using USB 3.0 compatible hardware.

I can get 30.MB/s read/write through same adapter.

30mb/s isn’t USB 3.0. We use USB 3.0 compatible hardware for backups and get ~90mb/s. These is something wrong with your test setup.

        • No, it means the other card I used maxed out 30MB/s. Irregardless the card from PC Bytes should easily max out 30MB/s through same adapter. And even USB 2.0 would be still be capable of 60MB/s.

Are you sure it's a 3.0 or 3.1 card reader and not 2.0.

      This ^

Someone else tested from the post and was getting the correct speeds.

There is still the real possibility of his being a DOA which PCB can sort out for him.

  • Put it in your phone and transfer a bunch of videos (of known size) to it and see how long it takes.

PC Byte are extremely reputable. Would make absolute no sense for them to sell fake sd cards. As mentioned earlier could just be DOA/Faulty unit.

      Hilarious.

Wow, reading through the various deals over some time, but admittedly not lately, I've regarded them as one of the better retailers.

I've made a point of buying from them due to all the good feedback I read.

        Could you please expand?

    • They're a pretty good bunch from my experience too. I've bought a few things from them without an issue, and did an RMA with them in person recently. Pretty helpful and friendly bunch if you ask me. They've also been around for quite some time now.

If I were OP, I'd be questioning my testing setup, TALKING to pc Byte and considering the fact that it might be faulty. Way before going straight to claiming that they are selling fake cards based on a sample size of 1?

You are probably benchmarking it wrong. There is some sort of bottleneck that is affecting the read speed.

    • Make sure that you close all programs
    • Update all drivers
    • Make sure you are using a proper card reader with full speed support
    • End all Services and Process that are using up too much of the systems process
  • Have you contacted PC Byte about your concerns?

    • Of course, I requested refund and got canned response where they claim all their products are 'genuine'. No info on how to proceed with refund or return from them.

If you are 100% certain that you have received a counterfeit product

If you paid with PayPal then open a dispute
If you paid with a credit card then lodge a chargeback

The big issue is that you would be required to prove that the item is counterfeit.

Maybe contact Samsung and see if they can confirm if the card is genuine.

To be honest for the $30.00 that you paid for the card it probably isn't worth all of the effort.

i drive by PC Byte every morning and afternoon, would you like me to duck in and ask them regarding this?

  • Would you mind providing:

    • Pictures of the card
    • The model numbers of the card readers you've tested with
    • Other relevant hardware you're using to test with

PC Byte don't sell fakes. You've likely just gotten a bad batch, assuming there's no other factor.

  • the cards should be 100MB/s read and 60MB/s write.

These speeds are theoretical. There is no way for consumers to simulate tests with genuine nand to match those speeds.

  • I can't remember where I purchased my Samsung Evo Plus from, but I have been using it for several years, trouble free. Including a Crystal Disk mark performance test.
