  • Serious question - is it worth it?

It's a great game but you can definitely tell it's an older one. The mechanics are quite old and imo haven't aged particularly well (lots of backtracking, jilted combat, etc). If you haven't played it and like older games, totally worth it!

I'm about halfway through and mixed thoughts:

      • Camera controls much improved
      • Graphics much improved
      • Audio much improved

      But

      • Clearer graphics detracts from the fantasy - the original had more atmosphere despite being blocky, low-distance render
      • Gameplay is spartan by modern standards
      • In 2006 the huge open world was amazing and unusual, not so much anymore

Overall I'm enjoying it but partly because of nostalgia. A modern variant in the genre like Horizon Zero Dawn is a better game.

I played the PS2 version and have the PS3 version downloaded but untouched. Thought the concept was very interesting but due to the low graphical fidelity, I lost interest after the first colossus. Picked up a copy of the PS4 version recently courtesy of OzB and I was hooked on it due to the graphical upgrades. If you can hold off (large backlog etc.) I think the digital version will likely follow in the footsteps on The Last Guardian and drop to $17.95 at some point. At $30, I would give it a go if you liked the first or PS3 iteration as this was rebuilt from the ground up and there is a significant step up in the graphics.

    • I didn't play the original so no nostalgia goggles for me. I really enjoyed it though and it made me want to finish it. I bought it from Target for $20 a couple months ago I think so that was worth it for me. Plus I can sell my copy later.

Got the physical disc version for $20 before. Never played PS2 or PS3 version of the game (never owned PS2 or PS3). Had my doubts initially about a game where you basically need to defeat 16 bosses. Really enjoyed playing the game, but the camera angle is still quite frustrating, especially in hard mode time attack. Normal play through is fine because you can collect fruits and silver tail lizards to boost stamina and hitpoint + time is not an issue.

In terms of the best way to defeat the colossi, look at the time attack videos by XCV//. His method on Colossus #3 (Gaius) is great, but for normal playthrough (not time attack), it is easier to break if you break Gaius arm armour first. In hard time attack mode, there is so little time so his method (if you can pull it off) is really good. One down side of his videos is that he doesn't explain the details so you need to figure out how to emulate his attacks. You can look at other ones, but his attack method on the final colossus is really good (taking the shortest path to reach it, and no need to jump between arms). It made a huge difference for me. But, again, I wish he explains the details in certain bits (I figured them out eventually). Some of the other more popular playthrough videos are okay, but their methods are often not the best.

Definitely worth playing this game, but given it was available for $20 before, I am not sure $30.95 is a good buy.

      • Thanks for all the replies guys, awesome community ;)

        Guess I will wait then.

    • I bought it for 20 at target. Very good game but I don't think it's worth more than that.

      • I never had a console before, PS4 Pro was my first console and I got it because I wanted to play Horizon Zero Dawn. I got it at some 5 odd bucks from PS store on release day, and just finished the game yesterday, and for me having never ever played the game before, it was totally worth it at 50+ odd bucks. At 30.95, it is a definite recommendation for me, specially if you are like me who loves giant boss battles.

Do note if all of us keep on waiting to play games only when they are $15-20, I doubt companies will bother making AAA titles any more. So I save on some titles where I can wait, and for the titles I love, I but it on release day or within a month of it so game companies also get some support. But hey that's only me, everyone is different.

        • If a person still hasn't got this game yet, then from an OZB point of view, we have to let that person know about the $20 deal. It was a popular deal with many retailers price matched it willingly and unwillingly. Also, it also means the game isn't considered a must for that person.

Just because some of us didn't buy this game at launch, it doesn't mean we "never" buy any game at launch day or close to launch day paying near full RRP. I purchased quite a number of PS4 titles pretty much at launch day. While Shadow of the Colossus is certainly a game which far exceeded my expectation, it was not a must have right away game for me.

For this game, there is an advantage for unskillful player like me to wait a bit (rather than get it on launch day). The really useful youTube videos are generally released a bit later than those really popular ones. The really popular ones, honestly, aren't that good (despite those people have previously played the PS2 version). If you want all the items, then playing time attacks in hard mode is required. Knowing the shortcuts and the best way to defeat colossi efficiently will make life a bit easier - still can be quite frustrating at times.
