Lucky I got it free with a Pixel 2 XL…….

Moral of the story, there WAS always a better deal, but today, this is the best deal.

      • Very true (hence my grin for luck getting yesterday's promotion).

Woolies older free deal (4x $50 shops) was popular too, but not for me. Waited for a cheaper upfront price. And yesterday was the day for me😀

Just it's likely there'll be better deals for those who wait.

        • Yea I rarely get great deals, but getting a free Pixel 2 Xl and a Home mini has me set for the next year.

        • $20 here too :)

  • Is the home mini useful to setup in a car? Like choosing what songs to play, how about setting a gps instruction? Can it do that?

    • Hey, no I don’t think it would be good for that, it’s mainly good to set up in your home and use it to set timers or quickly google something you don’t want to use your phone for. If you need something for the car to choose a song to play maybe try a Bluetooth AUX and connect you phone to it.

Remember that you would need a WiFi connection to be able to use it.
A WiFi connection in the car is usually provided by making you mobile phone a hot spot.
      BUT
If you already have your phone in the car why not just use the Google Assistant (or Siri or Bixby) on the phone, which has (have) similar capabilities and it can play via Bluetooth or other means through your car stereo?

    • +2

na you'd use Google Assistant, Bixby or Siri for that as long as you setup voice-activation.

  • What do these need to be plugged into, is the cord just for charging?

    • Cord is just to power the device, there is no charging (no battery inside).

      • +1

Do you gotta have it near a power outlet to use, well that sucks I’d love to have them round where the power points aren’t easy access

        • Use a powerbank.

        • -1

@cristtos: Good idea, however adding a bulky powerbank makes it less of a 'mini' . I wonder if the full size one has battery in it.

    • It's a very low charge micro usb…tried charging a device using the stock power brick that came with my Google Home once and it didn't even do anything lol.

      • I wouldn't call 5V 1.8A very low charge

        • I believe that is MAX, like when it blasts full volume :)

Standby current is so low that it may not trigger the feed from a powerbank (some of them have a button to manually trigger the feed).

        • @cristtos: We weren't talking about standby power consumption. andrgram tried using the included charger but said it wouldn't charge anything because of the low output to which I replied 5V 1.8A is not considered low output.

        • +1

@m9: I believe what andrgram meant was that he could not start it up because the 'non-singing' (listening?) drawn current is so low that the power brick does not activate.
But, again, I may be wrong.

        • @cristtos: ohhh i get you Cristtos….that would make a lot of sense.

        • @cristtos:

tried charging a device using the stock power brick that came with my Google Home once and it didn't even do anything

This just means andrgram tried using the power brick to charge a device - presumably a phone or tablet - anything with a Micro USB port.

he could not start it up because the 'non-singing' (listening?) drawn current is so low that the power brick does not activate

Sorry this doesn't make sense. If the power brick was plugged into the Mini then you can't use it for another device as there is only 1 output cable. Plus power bricks do not activate - they just sit there and supply power on demand up to the max rating.

        • @m9: I do not want to argue. Some powerbanks have more than one USB port anyway. For some devices (eg my watch) I need to press the button on my MI powerbank to start it up.
Anyway, andrgram got the idea, let's leave it here.

        • @cristtos: Not arguing. You keep going the powerbank route. I know about the low power output of powerbanks - I too have a few Mi powerbanks.

But in this instance andrgram said he tried using the stock power adapter that came with the Mini to charge another device. Nothing to do with powerbanks. This stock power adapter DOES NOT work the same as the Xiaomi powerbanks. They do not have a low power mode. Power adapters just supply power on demand up to the max rating. If you need 0.1A, sure, it supplies that. If you need 1A, sure, it supplies that. Anything up to the max rating. No button presses required. No special activation required.

        • @m9: May bad. He uses the wording "power brick", which I associate with a powerbank.

        • @cristtos: No worries mate. Love your profile picture.
