QNAP TS-453BE NAS 4 Bays, Celeron J3455, 4GB RAM, HDMI $626.40 - FUTUONLINE eBay

120
PRAISE

Hi Everyone
barely come across NAS deals but this one seems very good. i have been running a QNAP TS-451 for years and this is basically the updated version with a better processor.

Original 20% off Select Sellers on eBay Deal Post

why QNAP?
because they give you a cloud account for free and you dont need to mess about with DYNDNS
the unit has a hdmi port that you can plug in to a TV and run Kodi as a media centre (this sets them apart from Synology for me along with being cheaper)
easily upgrade the RAM
there are thousands of amazing apps to help you automate all your digital content

why this drive?
its a new release and has a good processor which is not a mobile processor
it is capable of doing 4k video
it has 4 drive bays
ram is easy to upgrade if you need

what can i do with it?
i primarily use it to backup the whole familys devices, photos, videos, contact lists etc..
i also use it as a plex media server and kodi media player
the coolest part is it makes everything accessible from anywhere in the world (as long as your internet connection is fast enough)

  • Really wish I could get a good 4 bay for $400. I'm too tight for $600.

mate i struggled for years to justify the price but once you have one, you wont give it a second thought.
it automates so much, it definitely pays for itself in no time.
it is probably the single most used item in my house

Oh I already have an entire home network with servers and such. Just wanting something decent for extra storage that's not too expensive. I blame OzBargain for my tight arse.

        • i got the NAS when i realised it could do everything i needed easier than maintaining a server and all the things that go with it.
the ongoing running costs are less and it takes up about 1/10th of the space.

totally get it would be hard to justify if you already have a server though

      • Hi,

i am interested to purchased a NAS, but i am afraid it is no used for me.
i am not an IT guru, but i am a photographer, thinking of using it as a backup solution and access that from anywhere.

Can you be kindly to advise, what do you do with it? what do you automates? or, can you kindly share what is the benefit to have a NAS?

any idea if it can run windows server, and i can install software to let the softrun run 24/7 while the NAS is online?

        thank you

This is a wrong place to ask these questions. :)

I believe for non-IT people NAS is just a storage most of the time.
In this case this model can be an overkill for you.

In general, you can think NAS is "hard drive shared over network".
Most of the time it will be slower compared to local drive. But you can access it from different computers.
You can use some QNAP apps - browse QNAP website for more details.

Yes, it is designed to run 24/7.
But QNAP OS is based on Linux.
I don't think it can run Windows Server. But for me Windows Server is a bad idea in the first place unless you have very specific application to run there. :)

Yes, you can configure it to be accessible from anywhere.
But unless you have NBN you will feel the pain of ADSL upload bottleneck.

Also… Keep in mind - RAID is not a backup. RAID helps a bit with HDD failure.
But you still have to have multiple backups.

        • sorry i didnt see your comment earlier.
i wouldnt run windows server on it, i think thats abit overkill. they are fine to run 24/7, mine has been doing that for years (451A) and now this one will do the same.

accessing it from anywhere is easy as pie, you get a free qnap account and all you have to do is open the ports on your router to access the applications you need.

there are thousands of applications it can run because its x64 and you can set them up in containers. there is everything from photo backup, downloading stuff, running a blog, wordpress site, you can host your own website.

they are really easy to use but take some time setting up right.

for photography, you can just FTP to it remotely or use the web interface to access and backup your photos. there would be a hundred different ways to do it. i highly recommend them.

How about this one for $294?

      • +1

its not bad for a starter unit but it has a mobile processor and no hdmi.
what sets the more expensive models apart is the processing power

        • Why do you need HDMI for a NAS? Re: processor, you don't need a beefy processor unless you are planning to transcode 4K videos on the fly.

        • @dealspider:

ive used cheaper NAS in the past that stuggled when there were a bunch of programs running concurrently.

with HDMI, you can plug the NAS straight into your TV, it can run KODI so you can use it as a media player too which is really cool.
          dont need an extra device.

i use a logitech k480 keyboard trackpad combo, works a treat

    • Just need more HP microservers for $159!

      • There was $159 Microservers? Or are you thinking of those awful Proliant ML10s?

        • Mine is working fine with FreeNAS :D

          My N40L doesn't always turn on…

    • check out Asustor NAS; their price is competitive if compared with QNAP

  • Can anyone recommend a 4 bay enclosure that can be connected via USB?
The use case is to re-use some external drives for backup.

I have the synology ds918+ - I assume you can connect drives via usb as it has some usb3 ports. Has a great intuitive interface and has never failed at anything I do with it. You pay a bit more but it's worth it.

    • this is probably overkill for that.
why don't you transfer over the network though?
      so much more convenient

OMG been waiting for this unit to be cheaper.
