Caught Thief on Video - What Should I Do?

Hi Ozbargin,

So I have footage of a thief whom later broke into our home and stole several items. Which we’ve later on reported to the police and handed over the footage and warned our neighbours of the incident.

Do you have any suggestion what we can do that could get the awareness of the criminal individuals out there to the neighbourhood?

Thanks!

I agree with stuffing the thief in a wheelie bin, but what to do with the video?

Ask the police before you go sticking up flyers but I’d do that if you have a clear image of the bastad. In woolies, coles, local newsagent, library etc

I would imagine that in this crazy world - the thief might be able to sue you for using their image without permission!

    • Probably not the without permission, but they may be able to for defamation if proof is not of the actual theft. You can be sure its a thief if you have footage of the persons face at the door or something, but if it's not clearly the same person committing the theft they probably could get you for defamation.

But that's the thing - just because they've committed a crime, doesn't necessarily mean that we can then commit another crime that violates their rights.

put it on facebook marketplace, upload the footage to everywhere and anywhere you can, and then most importantly share the link on here.

Also what area do you live in?

    Bikies.

    That is all.

    • Hahahaha…legend…

    • Looking for the superannuation funds under peoples mattresses.

They just want their fees for financial advice, that's all.

    Show us the video :)

  • Only if the person in the video has been arrested and charged with theft (from you) (as a result) of the video footage would you be legally able to say it was him/her that did it and clearly state as a precaution, the neighbourhood should keep an eye on this person and their associates?

Gosh, that's a tough one. I think I've seen some houses with these things called letterboxes. My assumption is that people receive mail and things via these boxes. Maybe, just maybe, you could anonymously distribute a printed image and message via these letterboxes in your neighbourhood.
