doesn't the iphone API use cell phone and wifi triangulation too? It does a dam good job of it usually

That was my understanding too. The iPhone locks into your position within seconds of starting the mapping app, and there's no way the iPhone has its GPS receiver active the whole time as it uses too much power. Cold starting a GPS receiver can take minutes to retrieve enough satellite info.

  • This seems to be a p2p system, therefore you need data connection, if you have data connection you probably got an iphone as opposed to ipod touch. Therefore why wouldn't you just use iPhone's GPS.

Also, a p2p system needs users, and lots of them, so it would never work if it has a rrp of $12.99…. Especially when iOS already got a pretty good mapping system, and whole bunch of social media stuff to keep track of where your friends are.

  • Navizon takes the information it gathers ie: the GPS location of wifi and cells and it on-sells it to the companies to then use in devices for navigation that do not have a GPS radio built in.

Actually, It always has been free so this is a non deal. You need to pay $ to get a pro account which allows you to track your usage and make money from them. But all you have to do is wait for your first lot of points and buy the pro account with that.

I make about $150 a year from Navizon. They pay you US$10 for every 10000 points you collect. See the website
(edit: Navizon was removed by Apple about 6 months ago, it looks like this is an updated version but released as a whole new app. Not sure about the lite/pro account thing with this now, but my account logged into the new app and continues to work fine.)
